A to Z Challenge, The Quick and the Dead, Quest for Fire, Ninja News, Last Day to Enter Giveaway, and CassaStorm Theme Song

My theme for the A to Z Challenge is Favorite Movies, Bloggers, and Music! I’ll name a favorite movie that corresponds with the letter, and then select a character from the film. I will then name a favorite blogger who reminds me of that character, and then dedicate a song to him. (Also corresponding with the alphabet.) I’ll wrap it all up with trivia and/or fun facts about the movie, the blogger, or the music!

In addition, two lucky commenters this month will receive a review copy of CassaStorm! One comment per day and each is worth one entry except – the first and one hundredth comments on each day will receive ten entries!

The Quick and the Dead

Sam Raimi brings his crazy directorial style to a western. It boasts a great cast – you’ll be amazed just how many stars are in this film. (If you can find the director’s cut, you’ll see Bruce Campbell.) It’s a real bigger than life western.

Ellen is a gunslinger with a troubled past and set on vengeance. She’s dangerous and tough, but her vulnerability is what makes her appealing. Ellen has set her sights on her goal and nothing will stop her now.

Who is Ellen?

Ellie Garratt!

(Similarity of names purely coincidental.)

Troubles and challenges entered Ellie’s life, but she emerged stronger than before. Focused and determined to succeed, she has done just that and more. We don’t see much of the real Ellie, but that is her vulnerability. Overall, it makes for a very endearing combination.

Ellie Garratt is the author of Passing Time and lives in the UK

To you I dedicate Quest for Fire by Iron Maiden. (Title leads to YouTube.)

Because I thought not only would you appreciate the band, but the storyline of the song (and the equally funny and cheesy video) – “Then the tribes they came to steal their fire, And the wolves they howled into the night…”

Trivia and Facts:

Did you know that Sharon Stone was so insistent that Leonardo DiCaprio appear in the film that she paid his salary?

What is the name of Iron Maiden’s mascot?

P’s trivia answer – The Princess Bride novel and screenplay were both written by William Goldman.

Theme Song for CassaStorm

I’d meant to post this when I revealed the cover and forgot! I’d shared it with my critique partners before sending the manuscript, as the piece really captures the tone of the book. I don’t normally get into soundtracks, but my wife loves the soundtrack for Tron: Legacy, and once I heard this song, it became the theme song for CassaStorm. I think once you hear it you’ll see that the tone of this book is a little darker than the last one. I’m really counting on Bassan, Byron's ten-year-old son, to balance it out.

Start the video at 1:35 for full impact.

A storm gathers across the galaxy…

Byron thought he’d put the days of battle behind him. Commanding the Cassan base on Tgren, his only struggles are occasional rogue pirate raids and endless government bureaucracies. As a galaxy-wide war encroaches upon desert planet, Byron’s ideal life is threatened and he’s caught between the Tgrens and the Cassans.

After enemy ships attack the desert planet, Byron discovers another battle within his own family. The declaration of war between all ten races triggers nightmares in his son, shaking Bassan to the core and threatening to destroy the boy’s mind.

Meanwhile the ancient alien ship is transmitting a code that might signal the end of all life in the galaxy. And the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Tgren twenty years ago could be on its way back. As his world begins to crumble, Byron suspects a connection. The storm is about to break, and Byron is caught in the middle…

Fan of The Quick and the Dead? Following Ellie? Any Iron Maiden fans out there? Can you name their mascot? Entered the giveaway? And what do you think of the synopsis now that you’ve heard the music behind it? This Ninja would really like to know…

Seeing Oblivion this afternoon – fingers crossed!

Also, I must confess, I haven't been able to watch The Quick and the Dead all the way through. I get kinda... well, bored. Maybe I should give it another go.

  26. I adored "The Quick and the Dead" and had no idea Sharon paid Leonardo's salary. Ellie Garratt is truly talented and awesome!
I'm sorry about Gail's sick husband and wishing them well.
As usual, I'm totally stumped by the trivia question. :P

  27. Wow! Music and synopsis both sound great.

  29. I hope everything turns out well for your friend Gail and her husband.

Congrats to Ellie! The Tron soundtrack is pretty dark but that's what I like about it. I like your blurg, sounds like the stakes are high in CassaStorm which fits the mood of the soundtrack really well. Only a few more months before it comes out!!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Great movie! Haven't seen that one in a long time, either.

  31. Livia, we'll compare notes.

  32. Haven't watched the movie. And I don't know Ellie, but I'll go check out her blog...thanks for introducing her. Interesting that you're going darker with this book...I've done that before, too, and nothing precipitated it--it just seemed like the right direction for that book.

    ReplyDelete
  33. HA! I love your wonky route from movie to character to author to song dedication. I haven't though of Iron Maiden since I was probably 18...

The music sounds like approaching thunder.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The sound track is very strong and captivating. I think it fits nicely :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. There's another Quick and the Dead I liked better with Sam Elliot, Tom Conti, and Kate Capshaw. I wonder why Sharon wanted Leo so much? And I can't wait to hear what you think of Oblivion...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ellie is very cool. Praying for Gail's Husband. Your synopsis definitely fits the song and vice versa. Have fun at Oblivion.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm so out of the loop I had to think really hard to remember what the heck Oblivion was, lol. It reminds me of that Will Smith movie coming out this summer. Can't recall the title either, ha-ha.

Great theme song. I love soundtracks and Tron: Legacy is definitely one of my favorites. I use it quite a lot while writing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's candle time. I'll include one for Gail's husband. I heard the soundtrack three times trying to catch the feeling but it still sounds kind of desperate and struggling to me. However, I believe sometimes music just echoes whatever is inside you at the moment.
And I was wondering yesterday after I posted the 100 again, if the Goodreads giveaway doesn't come to Mexico, the comment one would or I am just stealing someone else's real chances?

    ReplyDelete
  41. All the best to your friend Gail, I hope the heart transplant comes through soon.

  42. Elizabeth, the circumstances just kept mounting. Seemed a natural direction for the story though.

MsHatch, my review will probably be up tomorrow.

Isis, that one is After Earth. And I found that soundtrack made for good background music when writing.

Al, hitting first and number one hundred gets you a lot more entries. Keep at it.

  43. OBLIVION is derivative but the look is stunning and Tom Cruise breathes life into his role. It is definitely worth seeing.

    ReplyDelete
  44. This will be a weekend for writing and spending time with family and friends. No movies. But I'll keep oblivion on my radar.

I did not know Sharon Stone went that far to bring Leo into the mix cast for that movie.

Ellie is an excellent pick. She's a great blogger to follow and definitely aimed and primed for meeting her goals :-)

    Have a great weekend!

  58. Leo gets a lot of flack, but I think he's a very gifted actor. He should have won an oscar for What's Eating Gilbert Grape (best supporting actor).

    Iron Maiden's mascot is Eddie!

  59. Roland, I'll let everyone know tomorrow.

Joylene, they got one of them.

    John, no you don't.

    Suze, your husband rocks.

  60. LOVE the Tron soundtrack. And I'm seeing Oblivion tonight. Go sci-fi!

I never really liked Sharon Stone much as an actress. I know she was big a few decades ago, but she never resonated with me. I always liked Leah Thompson but she never did anything outside of two movies I saw.

Thanks for the link to your book trailer!! It confirmed a suspicion I had while reading the chapter where Trindel says he is leaving. *Grin*

  68. I never dug Iron Maiden as much as I liked their posters and album covers. They did have some great songs, just overall I didn't worship them as much as I did some others.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Great soundtrack!

I have to check out Ellie, she sounds wonderful ;)

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think Ellie is one of the neatest people EVER. Great choice!

  105. That's an interesting fact about Sharon Stone paying Leonardo DiCaprio's salary. I think I'm going to track down the film now just to see his acting skills in the flick--see if he was worth the payout. haha He does a good job acting, so probably.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Doesn't Russell Crowe also show up in the Quick and the Dead? Guess that was just before he became a big star.

Yes, a signal warning of the death of a galaxy would make CassaStrom kinda dark storytelling, wouldn't it? I'm so looking forward to reading it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Geez. I thought I knew the trivia and I was wrong. Love the teaser for your book. I can't wait as the stakes are the highest yet.

  110. Every great story needs a soundtrack. That's awesome!

I didn't know that Sharon Stone paid Leo DiCaprio's salary in The Quick and the Dead. How interesting. And she was right to do it to because his performance is one of the best things about that film. I was moved to tears by his character, it was so sad.

  119. Quick and the Dead is a brilliant film and really unappreciated in the history of Western cinema. It takes the best part of Westerns, the quick draw, and makes a whole movie out of it.

Loved the 1st two books and highly recommend them.

  129. Never saw that movie either. I was about to rent it, but opted against it. Sharon Stone's films had been leaving me a bit bored. I'll have to check it out...I trust your judgment!

  130. Alex, my husband loves Iron Maiden--and so does our youngest. My older son and me: not so much.

  131. Oh, wow. Thank you Alex! I'm really touched. Thank you also to everyone who commented.

I'm sorry I didn't didn't see this earlier. I've been abroad for a few days and forgot to notify my mobile phone provider. Unfortunately, I had no network to check my emails.

  133. Not a fan of The Qucik and The Dead even though Russell Crowe is in it and Gene Hackman-Seeing through the bullet hole just didn't ring true for me:)Oh well. I love the combo of the music with what is written-it does capture the feeling

  134. Love Bruce Campbell, but just have a hard time with Western movies, unless they are space Westerns like Firefly. :)
