Last Movies of the Year!

Yes, it’s time for December movies. Less than a month to Christmas! Nobody panic.

Before I dive into the movies, a couple quick announcements and reminders:

S.A. Larson’s picture book story is in a publisher’s competition and it would be really cool if you could go vote for her! Visit her SITE for details. Kelly Polark’s piece is also in the competition! Too many awesome writers...

Downey is perfect as Holmes – can’t wait for this one!

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol 
The IMF is shut down when it's implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization's name.

Stars: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton
It looks cool and I’ve enjoyed all of the M:I movies so far.

The Adventures of Tintin 
Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. But someone else is in search of the ship.
Director: Steven Spielberg
Stars: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig
The animation looks stunning! One of two Spielberg movies this December.

(Daniel Craig is also in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - busy man!)

The Darkest Hour 
In Moscow, five young people lead the charge against an alien race who have attacked Earth via our power supply.
Director: Chris Gorak
Stars: Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella
This has the quirk factor going for it. 

War Horse 
Follows a young man named Albert and his horse, Joey, and how their bond is broken when Joey is sold to the cavalry and sent to the trenches of World War One. Despite being too young to enlist, Albert heads to France to save his friend.
Director: Steven Spielberg
Stars: Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, David Thewlis
Somehow, I have a feeling my wife will drag me to see this one. We saw the last stupid horse movie…

    The M.I. movie looks good and they usually deliver.

    (I'm sure the only reason you don't want to see the horse movie is in case you cry. Well, that's my excuse.)

    Just saw Hugo = really was brilliant. Sherlock is on my list. War Horse? Well, even the trailer made me choke up a little - so I guess I'll wait for the DVD next year so I can sob in the privacy of my own home.

    I'm really looking forward to the Mission Impossible movie. That sounds fantastic. Sherlock Holmes doesn't sound too bad, either. :)

    Woot!!!! Love the movies! I'm actually heading out this weekend to see Breaking Dawn. Finally. Hopefully things will be a bit calmer now that some time has passed. LOL!

    Hi Alex .. I've seen Tinker Tailor and very good acting it is .. the others I'm not sure about ..

    I'm going to See "We Need to talk about Kevin" with Tilda Swinton - brilliant performance by her I gather. And another film society one next week ..

    Love Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes. I'll go to the theater to see that one. The rest don't really appeal to me, except War Horse, and I'll wait to see that one on DVD. I don't like crying in theaters.

    I'm giggling about your horse comment. Some of these look pretty good, though if I get a vote, probably my theater movie this month will be Hugo. Though Robert Downey Jr. Is always tempting--I really love his range... erm... among other things.

    I definitely want to see Sherlock Holmes (loved the first one) and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (but only because Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner are in it).

    Maybe I've been living under a rock, but I haven't heard about any of these movies. I watch very little television these days, so that might explain why. I have heard of the book for War Horse. My friend says the book is great.

    I could die happy after watching Tintin. I've waited for a film of that comic since I was a kid. Holmes for sure. MI because Mr. Bird is the man, and War Horse, because I haven't missed a Spielberg film yet.

    I'll be checking out each of the first four... though I must say I'm only willing to see MI:Protocolo Fantasma (as it says in your image) because of Brad Bird.

    Of course, with The Professor in tow, I don't expect a chance to see any of them until they arrive in a red envelope sometime next year. But you go, and enjoy yourself. Even if you're stuck watching a stupid horse movie.

    I'm not sold on War Horse. Why would I pay money to go cry? And really, is there a plot point other than "Make audience cry"?

    As for me, I'm giddy. One of the local theaters here does a full day LOTR marathon for $10. Doors open at 9:30am and we'll watch the extended editions of 1 and 2, and the theatrical release of 3, wrapping up somewhere around 10:30 that night. I'm excited but also unsure how my body will react to spending that much time in theater seats...

    Also, I've been waiting for the Sherlock Holmes movie. The first one was awesome, and I'm still holding my breath that Holmes will say, "Elementary, my dear Watson."

    Oh, you had to have seen Secretariat...that was an awesome horse movie. And if you haven't, your wife should sit you down and make you watch it. :)

    Looking forward to seeing Robert Downey Jr in another Sherlock Holmes movie. I'll watch anything he's in.
    I grew up reading TinTin comic books in Sweden, so that's a must see as well. The boys (14 and 12) are looking forward to it. However, we don't usually GO to movies and instead wait for the DVD. Damn budgets...I'm planning on joining the insecure writers next week. It's been slipping past my radar for a long while now...

    Son and I had a mom/son movie afternoon and watched Crazy Stupid Love and Conan. Do I have to turn in my girl credentials if I admit to liking Conan better? Actually, I thought it was well done. Should have done better at the box office.

    I have to admit, my inner fangirl squealed when I saw another Sherlock Holmes movie was coming out. I love Robert Downey Jr!

    And I've always loved Tom Cruise and his Mission Impossible series. Been waiting for that one awhile now. :D

    Sherlock Holmes, Mission Imopossible, and TinTin all look good. We haven't watched any movies in a while though . . . it seems like our fall/winter months are so busy with other amazing events that movies just get left behind. I miss them, but can't be sorry about skiing, watching my girls dance, or wrangling a bunch of kids into Christmas pageant.

    LOVE Gary Oldman! I would love to see that remake and I agree that Robert Downey is great as Sherlock Holmes. The horse flick..well the ending will probably be that he finally meets back up with the horse and the horse saves him but dies doing so..weep, weep. Blah, blah. Now for great Christmas films that I always watch-"It's A Wonderful Life"-How can one not love that movie. I alos love "Going My Way", "Miracle on 34th St" and many others. Of course must watch Rudolph and Santa Claus is coming to town. I always feel bad when the TV cuts out the future ms. Santa singing in an LSD Psychedelia(Spelling??) inspired style...oh well. :)

    The quirk factor always attracts me. I won't mention the Emile Hirsch factor. :) I love the premise of War Horse too. I wish hubby would go to the movies, but we wait for DVDs, or cable.

    The film that speaks to me the most is the Mission Impossible one, but I guess that's because it's been advertised on TV so much in the past week. The preview looks like a car commercial. Actually, I think it is a car commercial.

    I have been looking forward to the new Holmes movie for what feels like forever. So excited. Also want to see the new M:I movie and The Darkest Hour (not sure why but it intrigues me). I'm sorry you'll have to go see the horse movie...that sounds a bit like torture.

    John Carre is a brilliant spy novelist and former intelligence man himself, so I definitely want to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. And yes, I'll see the horse movie. I've seen just clips of the stage play and was amazed with it.

    Oldman, Downey, Cruise all make the list of course. (just watched Romeo is Bleeding with Oldman and loved it). The Darkest Hour will get my viewing as well. Horse movies touch me and after the intensity of watching the horse in the Coen brothers True Grit, I don't think I am up for another one just yet.

    My son read War Horse and is looking forward to the film, and TinTin is a favorite from my husband's childhood. Looks like those two will be our next movie outings!

    Very nice animation (using the latest techniques) in The Adventures of Tintin. But half of the film I was about to fall asleep, if not because of the peícula or my fault.

    War Horse was a major hit play in London a few years back. I think it's still running.
    I don't see many current movies, usually waiting for them to come out on DVD. Here in Santander we have Filmoteca, part of a national chain subsidized by the government. For only 2.5 euros you can see art films, international indies, and old classics.
    They've been showing lots of old classics lately and I recently saw Rosemary's Baby. Hadn't seen it in 20 years and it still felt pretty creepy.

    Ah, December releases are always great. Saw "Tintin" the other day and really, really enjoyed it. The animation was stunning.

    The Darkest Hour and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows look like great fun! Ah, I'll watch all of these.. I can't help it. :)

    The Christmas spirit movies depress me, but there is a Spanish film of the 60's (during the dictatorship of General Franco) is a key social critique in humor. It's called "Placido" and is one of the best of Spanish cinema, but I see that hard to find with English subtitles.

    Don't forget Simon Pegg is in the new MI movie! I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, but I adore Simon. I saw the original GWTDT film and it was disturbing. Yet I'm still wanting to see the Daniel Craig version.

    Super 8 arrived from Netflix today. That's my weekend movie!

    'Sherlock' I'll have to see for sure and TinTin (maybe) - Spielberg doesn't usually miss with his choices.

    (Another excellent Sherlock is The BBC version for TV. It's more like the classic, updated to modern times)

    Sherlock is my top pick. I loved the first one. Ghost Protocol looks pretty cool although I'm not a Tom Cruise fan. And I do want to see War Horse, since I love horses, but I have a feeling I'm going to cry watching it...

    None of those particularly catch my eye, although I think Gary Oldman is a fantastic actor.

    As for Christmas films, I've never seen "It's a Wonderful Life", and I think this year I might rectify that fact.

    What I love about December is that there are always lots of cool movies to see. I'm excited for Sherlock Holmes, Mission: Impossible, and War Horse. And I'll probably try to catch one or two limited releases that are getting some Oscar buzz. Because I like to do that.
