What inspires my science fiction/fantasy mind to write?
Because it’s a world beyond our own! I write for the same reason I watch movies and read books – to escape. I want to go somewhere beyond the confines of our current life on earth, though. I want to see other worlds; experience life through new races; witness different situations and technology. Yes, many of the struggles are similar to our own, but I identify with them more because they occur in a setting other than here. My curiosity drives me to envision and create a unique world, one unseen by others. I want to boldly go where no man has gone before! (You just knew that was coming, didn’t you?) I am inspired by what I see in other books and in movies of my genre. It’s exciting and new. I want to continue that journey of discovery!

Stardate #nanowrimo 18.9 Connected the dots on Jadzia Dax's body. Funny, I expected more than a space pony... 30272 words

Alex, you totally hit on the point of writing. I also write to escape, though with me I take it to the next level of wanting to entertain, and possibly educate, others as well. It sends my heart into a whirlwind of joy to hear someone say they really liked what I wrote.

ReplyDeleteI'm the same way in writing (and reading) fantasy. Creating and exploring a new world that no one has ever seen before is a big part of the fun of writing it. Plus, there are far less boundaries then writing in the real world. Your imagination is the limit.
Loved the post Alex though as a straight writer I don't get very far, but with tenacity may make it one day.

Escape through writing (and reading) is the greatest. I love my imagination and love to live in it. Is that so wrong? :)

What I like about scifi is the what if factor, the spectulation, and the dreams of possiblilities that can be achieved as a result of imagination. When I've written science fiction I've mostly tended to stay in the now, near-future, or even the past.

I read to escape, but I don't think that's why I write. If the question was "Why am I writer" I'd probably have to break down and mumble something about the fact that I'm a crazy artist. LOL.

ReplyDeleteExperiencing (or creating) the unknown out of nothing is a textbook definition for imagination. Going beyond our own planetary confines to a totally alien world is one of the great joys we scifi fans have.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of, have you seen the new Green Lantern trailer? Are you as excited as I am? If you are bouncing off walls and reciting the GL oath to random passerby, the answer is "yes!"

ReplyDeleteYeah, when I read sci-fi/fantasy, it is to escape, and to dream of tomorrow. Someday - not necessarily in my lifetime - some of the scenarios and worlds that writers dream up will come true.
ReplyDeleteI'm a firm believer that it takes a writers creativity to inspire a scientists innovation. We dream it, they make it happen. Works well that way.
