Insecure Writer’s Support Group, Movie Reviews, and November Movie Preview

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

The awesome co-hosts for the November 5 posting of the IWSG are Jennifer Lane, Jenni Enzor, Renee Scattergood, Rebecca Douglass, Lynn Bradshaw, and Melissa Maygrove!

November 5 question - When you began writing, what did you imagine your life as a writer would be like? Were you right, or has this experience presented you with some surprises along the way?

I certainly couldn’t have predicted any of this! I thought one book and not much would change. But multiple books (a couple best sellers) and the Insecure Writer’s Support Group? Not to mention all the friends I’ve made along the way? That completely surprised me. And in a very good way!

Speaking of friends, we lost Sue, Elephant’s Child, last month. There is so much I could say about Sue, but Hilary and Nils both said it better. I will miss Sue’s Sunday Selections of birds, kangaroos, and flowers and her Words for Wednesday.

Reviews

John Candy: I Like Me

I’d heard good things about this documentary and it didn’t disappoint. Through his friends, fellow actors, and family, we learn about his actor journey. He was also a genuine person who elevated his fellow actors’ performances and devoted husband and father. (And I learned that interviewers often asked the crappiest questions, especially about his weight.) Definitely recommend it.

Weapons

All but one kid in a classroom vanishes in the middle of the night and many suspect their teacher.
While I certainly did not see it going the direction it did, it wasn’t an original direction. (I recently reviewed a film with the same trope.) It’s also more drama than anything else. It kept me interested but there were a couple major plot holes. From the doorcams, they knew which way the kids went – the cops couldn’t draw a line to their likely location? They also couldn’t bring in dogs? (I watch On Patrol Live – police dogs can find anyone!) If you can ignore those items, it’s worth a watch.

November Movie Preview

Here are the theatrical releases for November. Descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snark provided by me.

7 –

Predator: Badlands
Director – Dan Trchtenberg
Stars - Elle Fanning, Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi
A young Predator outcast from his clan finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary.
The Reeces Peanut Butter Cup of cinema – Predator and Alien universes. (But PG-13? Come on, man!)

14 –

The Running Man

Director – Edgar Wright
Stars – Emilia Jones, Glen Powell, Colman Domingo
A man joins a game show where contestants, allowed to go anywhere in the world, are pursued by "hunters" hired to kill them.
No Schwarzenegger? No Dawson? Color me skeptical.

21 –

Altered
Director - Timo Vuorensola
Stars – Tom Felton, Aggy K. Adams, Daniyar Alshinov, Richard Brake
In an alternate present, genetically enhanced humans dominate society. Outcasts Leon and Chloe fight for justice against corrupt politicians exploiting genetic disparity, risking everything to challenge the oppressive system.
Please stop giving away the entire plot in the trailer!

26 –

Zootopia 2
Directors – Jared Bush, Byron Howard
Stars – Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Ke Huy Quan
Brave rabbit cop Judy Hopps and her friend, the fox Nick Wilde, team up again to crack a new case, the most perilous and intricate of their careers.
Mel Brooks put it best – The Search For More Money!

What did you imagine your author/writer career would look like? Did you know Sue? Seen either of the movies? And what movies catch your attention this month?
For those in the USA, have a great Thanksgiving!

  5. When I was a kid, I dreamt that I would be interviewing famous people to write a biography on someone famous or about the silent cinema. I sooo want to to see the John Candy documentary. I still miss him. I want to see Nuremberg.

  8. I can't believe they made Zootopia 2. I mean, I liked the first one, but it didn't feel like there was much more of a story to tell.

Congrats on all your success! IWSG has really been amazing for me and so many others.

  11. It's sad news about Sue. Like you, I didn't imagine Literary Rambles and the IWSG when I started writing. I'll have to check out the John Candy documentary.

  12. I miss Sue as well. It's odd that she's not here anymore. For sure. I've never seen the John Candy one. Did go see Halloween that was released at our local movie house, recently.

Regarding the lemons. I wash them well with dish soap, dry them and then into cold water in the fridge. If there's a bad lemon, I don't add that one.

    Really impressed with this.

Wishing you a fun November. Whoosh go the months.

Pat and Birgit, track down that documentary!

    Jennifer, that's great to hear!

Ivy, good to know about the lemons.

  15. I enjoyed the John Candy doc. :)

I guess The Running Man is a remake of the original? Might be worth a look.

  16. I always appreciate your movie reviews. Sadly, none grabbed me this time. Back to Mountain Man on Hulu.

  17. I thought Weapons started out pretty good - I liked the way it was structured - but I agree about the direction it took.

I read King's The Running Man many years ago, and I think I'll just keep that version in my head. :)

  20. Badlands at pG-13? That's disappointing. Thanks for doing these reviews and previews. You are my cinema source these days. LOL

Writing friends are the best and the author network is so helpful and supportive. It's always sad when we lose one. :(

  23. Funny you should mention the dogs...I'm going to blog soon on things I see in movies, TV, series that break my reality and make me say—really?

  24. Sue was a special person in so many ways. I loved her blog and her warm-hearted messages. I'll miss her very much.

  25. Im actually hoping the "Running Man" remake will do better than the original. I did not like the original at all.

If "Weapons" is one of those movies that's storyline depends too much on an ironic ending, I won't bother seeing it, at least not in theatres. The plot does sound intriguing, though.

  26. I haven't watched the John Candy documentary, but it looks interesting. Now that I've seen your review, I'm going to have to check it out! Yours is the first expectations/reality post that was positive--congrats on all that you've achieved and given back to the writing community!

  27. I'll have to check out the Candy documentary.

  28. When I heard about Sue, it hit me hard. There have been quite a few people in our circles who've disappeared lately. Breaks my heart every time.

Don't you love how life takes you by surprise? I suppose that's why the scientists sabotaged the time machine in my basement. No glimpsing the future for us. Haha!

  29. I'm so sorry to hear about Sue.
Writing has certainly become a huge thing in your life, and we all owe you big time for founding (and running) the IWSG!

  30. I have not been seeing a lot of movies lately. Like, not at all. For a while. The John Candy doc looks interesting, though.

  32. Hi Alex! You've done great and it is all down to your hard work. As my daddio would say 'bum glue' is the thing.
Thanks Alex for being part of my writing life.

  33. Sue, Elephant's Child was such a wonderful person. Her passing was a blow.

  34. Hi, Alex! Thank you for sharing the news about Sue and the link to Hillary's and Nil's posts. I just learned of Sue's death when I read your post. It was a gut kick. Sue was an important blogging friend of mine. That's the special thing about the IWSG and the blogging world. We truly make meaningful connections and friendships. Please take care! ❤️

  35. Elizabeth, they changed the story some.

Jean, if we see Badlands this Friday, I will post a review for you.

    Leigh, fun!

Steven, it wasn't an ironic ending, just a beginning that wasn't plausible.

    Jenni, thanks!

    Crystal, want to use mine?

    Thanks, everyone!
