RiffTrax on Amazon, The Accountant Review, Devin Townsend Project, Movie Trivia and Answers, and Ninja News

I was to feature a guest today, but it fell through. And that’s all right. I recently told Truedessa that I wanted to scale back. Less promoting and more about what I want to share. I want to share more amazing speculative fiction stuff. More cool movies, more prog rock, more geek happenings and items. And certainly I want to share news of the IWSG and my books and writing.
The posts will still be packed, but it will be with geeky goodness!

RiffTrax Now on Amazon Prime!

My wife discovered that RiffTrax is now on Amazon Prime.

So of course, we had to watch one.

And our choice led us down a dark road…

Abraxas: Guardian of the Universe
This movie may have been forgivable had it released in 1971. That it came out in 1990…shame on everyone involved. It’s the equivalent of a dumpster fire three weeks after a garbage strike.
There’s no point in summarizing, because it’s completely inane.
And it starred Jesse Ventura in a role that should’ve killed his political career. Like, nuclear bomb killed.
Fortunately, RiffTrax manages to make the unwatchable hilarious!

Movie Review

The Accountant
First, I don’t understand the wide split in critics’ reviews. How could one not be entertained by this film or appreciate its clever uniqueness?
And it was original and clever. It was smart and subtle rather than in your face dumb action.
Great performances by everyone, especially Affleck. It was cool to watch a character who was a high-functioning autistic who possessed incredible math skills – and who was a trained killer.
It has a slower pace, but there are many great action sequences. The fights were more about stealth than over the top.
Recommended.

Music Review

Devin Townsend Project - Transcendence

For those not familiar with the artist, and that’s unfortunately a lot of you, Townsend has been making music very a very long time. He began as the singer for Steve Vai in 1993 and since then he’s separated himself as a truly unique singer and personality.
Over the years, he’s been the creator of several projects including Ocean Machine and Strapping Young Lad. Transcendence is the culmination of everything he’s done so far.
It’s progressive rock, which means it’s very complex, but it’s also very accessible. It features some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. The songs are incredibly layered and rich, resulting in a sound that is both moving and sonic. Listening to Transcendence is more of an experience than anything else.
If you enjoy powerful and melodic music, you’ll enjoy this album. As the title states – it’s transcending.

And while you read the rest of this blog post, please enjoy my favorite song on the album, Storm Bending. This is the generic YouTube video, but if you want to see the brand new video that plays more like an epic movie, visit Vemo. Believe me, it’s amazing!

Ninja News

There were two very special posts this past week. Toi Thomas gave a great review of CassaFire and Truedessa wrote the most amazing poem about the Dragon. Thank you, ladies!

Reedsy Learning
Presenting a new learning platform for writers - Reedsy Learning>
From Reedsy Co-founder, Ricardo Fayet:
Reedsy Learning is a brand new learning platform for authors. It offers free courses on pretty much every subject useful to an author, from story inception to marketing the book. Better yet, we've leveraged our network of friends and professionals to make sure each course is taught by a relevant industry expert.
Here's how the courses work:
• you can register for only one at a time
• you get 1 email every day for 10 days
• emails are 5-min reads (max)
• emails are sent in the morning (your timezone) so you can read them while sipping your coffee
Sounds like a great deal – and it’s free!

The IWSG Anthology Contest is open two more weeks! If ever there was a year to enter, this is it – we’ve not had as many entries as last year, so the odds are better. (Unless everyone is just polishing and will send the final week, which is possible!) Theme is fantasy/hero lost – 3000-6000 words. Make it happen!

Ooh, that "Storm Bending" song is great. No wonder you're a fan!

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

I'll have to check out RiffTrax on Prime!

I think the Charlotte paper gave a favorable review of The Accountant...maybe some reviewers 'got it' and some didn't?

Reedsy Learning seems like a great tool for writers!

Natalie Aguirre said...

I'm glad you liked The Accountant. I've been thinking of seeing it. Now I'll at least see it when it comes out on Netflix.

And promoting others is good, but good to share your own stuff that you're interested in too.

G. B. Miller said...

Oooh, I get to be in the top 10 for commenting. :D

In re: to trivia, I can get two.

1) Leon & Matilda: The Professionals (one very disturbing scene early on with a depraved Gary Oldman);

3) Pulp Fiction.

The others I have no idea.

I've been thinking about the seeing The Accountant, which would break my string of seeing a movie in a theater once ever six years.

I'm going to check out Reedsy Learning. Thanks for the tip!

Good Morning Alex,

First, I've never seen RiffTrax, but maybe now I can. I have been thinking of seeing the Accountant and it is still on my to do list. Thanks for the review.

You have always been generous in promoting others, but I think you need to do more of what speaks to you. It's your blog and should express things of interest to you. You readers will love you!

Thank you Alex, for the shout out. I am still working on that story, but in the meantime I can still write poems about that amazing dragon of the stars.

Enjoy your week!

Cathrina Constantine said...

I only knew 2 of the trivia....

Congrats to all the new releases and to a great review, Alex!

Mason Canyon said...

I haven't seen The Accountant so I'll have to put that one on my 'to-watch' list. Congrats to everyone with releases this week. Great vid, btw. Reedsy Learning sounds great for authors.

Rhonda Albom said...

LOL - When I saw the title included Accountant Review, I was worried that it was personal - that you were having an accountant review. Glad it was just a movie :)

Birgit said...

That's so nice to have recommendations on the others' blogs and have a poetic tribute. I do want to see The Accountant and it does look quite good. I got most of the trivia last week correct but I don't know any for this week. I can't think too clearly today so I will use that as an excuse.

Shady Del Knight said...

Hi, Alex!

WHOA! I watched the Devin Townsend Project's "Stormbending" official vid on Vevo and, you're right, it's like an epic disaster film depicting the end of the world with earthquakes and tornadoes (no sharks in them, thankfully). The music was equally powerful. I enjoyed this band!

Pat Hatt said...

lmao that movie sounds as horrible as can be.

Got all but one I think:

Leon The Professional
No Country for Old Men
Pulp Fiction
Ummm
The Mechanic

Finished my entry yesterday, just need to go over it a few more times.

Donna K. Weaver said...

I know some people will be miffed to see anything Christmas out yet, but I'm glad to see it. Congrats to JL and company.

mshatch said...

Well, I'm not going to do much better with this weeks trivia than last. I only know number one, The Professionals.

Ah, well. Have a wonderful week :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Heather, isn't it just epic?

Elizabeth, glad I got it.

GB, you did it! Two right and go ahead and break that pattern.

Truedessa, you're welcome! Keep working on it.

Rhonda - funny!

Shady, glad you watched the real video! It just came out, so hopefully it will make its way to YouTube eventually.

Pat, four right! And awesome you are entering.

Marcy, you did get one right though.

kaykuala said...

The Accountant comes highly recommended and it is being awaited for. More so with split in critic's review it is highly likely a balanced opinion. Townsend's Storm-bending is really a spectacular instrumental and very lively to hear. Reedsy is worth to check out. The desire to be led through the works is met and all for free!

I've heard of The Accountant, but I don't know much more about it than the title. :o

I got a couple of the trivia right last week. This time, not a clue. Although, I'll probably recognize some of the answers when I see them. :)

Rifftrax? A new one to me.

Haven't seen The Accountant, but based on your review, I should be able to get the family to go see it. Otherwise, we've been too busy to watch any movies.

I think my husband would enjoy Stormbending. I've been curious about The Accountant and am glad to know it's not all actions as the trailers imply.

Great reviews.

I sure hope more contest entries come in. If IWSG does the contest next year, romance, mystery or horror (these 3 were close) might create more results. Maybe admibs should vote on one of those genres and members can vote on a theme. That might help.

The Cynical Sailor said...

Reedsy Learning sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out.

I'm currently listening to the CassaStorm on audio, courtesy of you and Roland (many thanks!), and really enjoying it! The narrator does a really nice job with all of the different character voices.

Curious how many people entered the IWSG contest last year. Not sure if you share that information? I'm busy working on polishing my entry :-)

Cheers - Ellen

Preparing for winter here. No movies, few books and the only music I hear in on the radio that plays in our work shop to keep the pack rats out. Interesting life. I did know Hidalgo. "Nobody hurts my horse" was one of my favorite quotes and the action around it one of my favorite scene.

Hope you and your wife have a wonderful week.

Chrys, Lynda and I have already been discussing next year.

Ellen, glad you're enjoying it! Hope you enter. We had over thirty entries last year.

Gail, it was an underrated film.

Joylene, I'll try to keep them accurate.

RiffTrax binging time! :) Thank you for the shout out for Ghosts of Fire. Such an awesome collection. Have a terrific week!

P.S. I took a picture of two certain robots you know and love I saw a recent convention, and I'm just now remember to post it to you via twitter! The guy who made them was obsessive over it, making certain to get the exact same kind of parts that were used to make the originals!

glad you can get your Riff fix so easily now - fun times at the Cavanaugh house - hope you made popcorn! I enjoyed the Accountant too - Ben did a great job. Had to go with a few plot holes solved easily, and I could see a few connections early, but very entertaining. Also saw Kevin Hart's concert flick - he cracks me up. Can be a bit frenetic and language can be unnecessary, but still funny stuff. Your blog is always jam packed and awesome.

I think Jesse Ventura is the wrestler/governor dude who considered running with Howard Stern! He probably could have made a good hash of it too but sometimes its best to draw a line in the sand and not cross it. Thanks to RiffTrax we've another movie worth watching, ha ha.

I plan to take a one month Subscription of Amazon Prime in November (while I liked the format when I did the free trail. So many movies were unavailable due to my 'geographical location' that I saw no point in officially subscribing) so I'll finally get a chance to see this RiffTrax you chat so much about Alex. Yeah when you see that gun wielding toaster in the poster you know this movie's gonna suck. At least I do. Oh and that purple man with the pained face and the shocked lady. So many signs man! I have heard of the disparity between viewers and critics on The Accountant. Listened to the first two minutes of Stormbending. The back ground music makes me think of a rock version of Enya. I can see why you like it. Reedsy Learning sounds awesome, link opened! My submission for the anthology is coming soon Alex. Could only guess one movie on the trivia last week (Walk the Line) and again this week. Trivia #1 is The Professional. A masterpiece of the assassin movie genre and a really good movie period. Have a great day Alex.

Oh and a Youtuber who gives great reviews broke down what made The Accountant so awesome. Have not seen the movie yet but I already planned to from back when I saw the movie trailer. Enjoy Grace's video.

Christine, you're welcome. And how awesome!!!

Joanne, we did make popcorn. There were a few things in the movie that were a bit convenient, but it still worked.

Jess, avoid it!

Shelly, that's a lot.

Gingi, that's cool!

Sheena-kay, thanks for the YouTube link. Now you can binge watch some RiffTrax. Correct on the trivia and I'll have to pass on the rock version of Enya to my wife.

I still don't understand what RiffTrax is. Until I started reading your blog, I'd never heard of them.

I have, however, heard of The Accountant. Thanks for the review! The title makes me snicker, but it sounds like a good one.

Arlee Bird said...

From the trailers, The Accountant seems interesting to me. If I remember to watch it I guess I will.

The Devin Townsend Project sounds interesting--any group with "Project" in the title has to be either Prog rock or arty in some respect. Are they as melodic as the music of Schubert, Rachmaninoff, or the like? I think I get what you're saying though.

On Prime, you say? I have Prime. I know what I'll be watching later...

The Accountant looks like something I want to see. I can appreciate a slower pace if it pays off in the end.

Also, that's a killer song, but the guy with the few sprigs of hair is kind of distracting. He needs to shave his head and up his beard game like the rest of his bandmates.

Elizabeth Seckman said...

I'll have to check out the Accountant. I wasn't eager to watch it because I'm not a huge Affleck fan, especially since he was caught with the nanny.

Sandra Cox said...

I skipped straight to your review of The Accountant:) I'm really intrigued by the story line so I appreciated hearing your take on this movie.

Fundy Blue said...

Great post, Alex! I like your new approach. And I have Amazon Prime, so I can check out RiffTrax and "The Accountant." I also want to visit Poi's and Trudessa's posts and Reedsy Learning Thanks!!! Quite an epic sounding song you shared! I'm in serious crunch mode because we're leaving shortly on a house-hunting trip.

I'm still polishing my fantasy manuscript. I've been setting mine up following publishing guidelines for a short story submission. Terry shredded it with really great editing last night, so I'm working on the latest draft. I have a couple of questions. Is there a required format to submit the manuscript in ~ hope I didn't miss that somewhere. Is 6000 words a hard cap? If I did exceed that by a few words would I be disqualified?

Have a good one!

JH, you are now informed!

Lee, you'll just have to listen to the video.

Libby, not sure it was marketed right and it sure could have used a better movie poster.

Cherie - funny! And you're welcome.

Brandon and Bryan, he does stand out! Must be the Frank Beard of the group.

Sandra, it was a really good movie.

Fundy, go watch some RiffTrax! And a couple words over is all right, just don't go way over.

Andrew, think I'll still skip it.

Tonja, it's just the new banner. Last book was over a year ago.

3. Pulp Fiction.

RiffTrax on Amazon Prime! Now I won't have to force my husband to attend one at the movies.

Accountant was superb. A broad spectrum of autism makes "one size fits all" impossible. Think of all the people you have known, and how many seemed "odd" or mentaly impaired...and you probably know austism.

This was a well-written and acted, and something everyone should consider seeing.

The Accountant isn't my type of movie (no vampires ^_~) but nice to hear about an original story. We need more of those in Hollywood.

Stacy McKitrick said...

You must go to the movies a lot. I used to, but it's just gotten so expensive and the theatre here so stupid (they have assigned seats), it's just not fun anymore. Certainly not if we want to go spur of the moment. Most likely wouldn't have a good seat available. And if I purchase tickets on line, they charge a FEE! Ugh.

I am interested in seeing The Accountant, though. Might have to wait for the DVD.

Great reviews are always good to have. I didn't read the poem either.

I'm afraid you and I don't really agree on musical choices Alex although this could possibly grow on me.

When I first heard there was an action movie called "The Accountant," I actually cracked a joke about it. Kinda like "The Postman" back in the day. Both jobs you wouldn't expect to be hit films. (Not that The Postman was...) But critics are usually not so easy on popular films. They like the artsy-fartsy stuff. That's why I usually don't even read reviews. I just form my own opinion! I did look up reviews about 30 minutes into the Steve Jobs movie...I found one reviewer who echoed what I was thinking. This shit is BORING!!! I never thought I'd say this, but I liked the Ashton Kutcher version more! At least it was more than just people walking around talking forever.

My little brother loves RiffTrax. I'll have to tell him about that next time we meet up, though he might've already gotten some of the new ones. With a title like Abraxas: Guardian of the Universe, it's pretty much a dead giveaway that's an awful movie.

Hi Alex. Good news about RiffTrax. And Reedsy. I'll check it out. Great news about Lynda Young's book too. So much good stuff happening!

Hmm, "smart and subtle", that's my type of movie, I might have to look into The Accountant. I will also probably grab a copy of Cling to God, congrats to Lynda! Reedsy Learning looks great, I like email courses :) You have some great shares this week!

Annalisa, I've no idea what movie the haters saw.

Robert, did you get to go?

Dixie! Good to hear from you.

Jo, that's all right.

Stephanie, I haven't seen that one yet.

Carrie-Anne, you brother is cool.

Elizabeth, Lynda would appreciate it.

This week's trivia has only one clicking with my memory: the first. Now what was the name of that movie? The ... the ... The Professional?

I am one of those people holding on to my IWSG anthology entry until later. I keep thinking the second I email it in, I will realize a huge, stinking plot hole that needs to be fixed.

Oh, I just returned from watching The Inferno (better than expected) and Te Accountant was advertised. Looks great! Thanks for the review!

Have an awesome weekend. X

1 is The Professional (love that movie). 3 is Pulp Fiction? Not sure about the others. I wasn't sure about The Accountant since I'm really not an Affleck fan, but I will likely rent it since it does look good.

I'll have to check out Lynda's new book. Got my IWSG story written. Woohoo!

I don't allow guest posts on my blog either. I know people are hopping and need short & sweet posts, and mine already run long with Foxy's Freebies and occasional features on new releases (although those seem to be increasing!).

I'm so glad you enjoyed the RiffTrax move! Laughter is important.

Thanks for the film review!

Congrats to Lynda, JL, Untethered Realms, and Jeremy! :)

Hey Alex, the accountant has been on my list of movies to watch for a while. Time is running out this weekend but I'll be sure to watch it next weekend.

"Abraxas" threw me for a second there, as I've done a lot of writing in a world called Abraxas. I know it's a Greek term and didn't directly come from that movie, but... yeah. >_<

And the only trivia I know is that the first one is "The Professional", which I only know from people telling me about it. *shrug*
