Retro A to Z Challenge: C – CassaStar 2010

CassaStar – 2010

CassaStar was a debut novel, a total re-write from a thirty year old manuscript, and supposed to be the only book. By the time it launched, I realized it was more than my first book – it was the beginning of an incredible adventure! CassaStar became an Amazon Best Seller in science fiction and spawned two more novels. And to think I didn’t even want to be an author…

2010 fun facts –
*Cost of average house - $232,850.00
*The first iPad was released
*The world’s tallest building at 2,716 feet opened in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa
*The Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver, Canada (USA topped the medal tally)

Movies released –
Inception
Tron: Legacy
Tangled
Iron Man II
How to Train Your Dragon

Music released –
Star One – Victims of the Modern Age
Daft Punk - Tron: Legacy Soundtrack

Games released –
Dragon Age: Origins Awakening
Mass Effect II: Lair of the Shadow Broker

And why is 2010 special?
Because that is the year Elizabeth Seckman watched her two oldest boys get confirmed and accept the Lord for themselves.

Elizabeth is the author of several novels and mother to just as many boys. She is a cheery, caring soul with an amazing sense of humor and a blessing to all who meet her. She’s talented, wise, and just a beautiful lady and person. Find Elizabeth at her blog HERE

Diablo III Expansion Pack – Reaper of Souls
The new act is short and I finished playing in less than a week. However, it provides a new adventure mode and a new character (a crusader) to help you slay your way through the bowels of hell and the heights of Heaven. And bonus – download was a snap!

Can you believe it’s almost four years since my first book? Following the awesome Elizabeth? Picking up the new books? Played any good games lately? And what do you remember best about 2010…?

I’m also posting at the A to Z Blog today. Hope you’re keeping tabs on the site, because there’s been some good information.

And I am doing my best to keep up with the posts and comments, but forgive me if I miss your post. IWSG day was just a bit overwhelming...

  1. So houses were like 100x more expensive than in 1974. That's kind of insane.

  2. I like your retro fun facts. Wow, I only heard of Daft Punk this year. I'm way behind on the times!

    ReplyDelete
  3. The Burj Khalifa is insanely tall, and I love the way it looks. I saw a stunning photo of Dubai that was taken at night, and fog had descended on the city. The city lights made the fog glow, and the Burj Khalifa towered above it all. It was a beautiful piece of photography. The photographer's name is Daniel Cheong, just in case anyone wants to look up his work.

And I shudder to think how much a house will cost a few more years down the line. Yikes!

  4. Great post Alex and a great book was Cassastar.
What do I recall of 2010, the first A to Z, a great time had by all.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Made it early here today cause I'm up late where I am.

It is amazing that it's been that long since CassaStar came out and that this A to Z is the 5 one!

  6. Yes, I'll bet it was overwhelming today. And wow, you stopped by my post. Thank you.

Good to see so much of yourself in this post today Alex. And congrats to Elizabeth. Boys and books, not an easy success :)

  7. Ooh I love these fun facts! The world's tallest building opened in Dubai...2,716 feet...wow!

All great movies that year. I'll place Inception at the top and the other ones are a tie lol

Oh 2010: The year my twins were born :)

  8. Awesome!! I get to be highlighted along with CassaStar? And such nice things you say. That was a special occasion...a very proud moment!

  9. I remember how excited we were when the Cassa-series hit best seller lists. You're a powerhouse, Alex, and you're doing such a great job on the AZ list, per usual!

    ReplyDelete
  10. You're doing an amazing job keeping up, Alex.

I too adore Elizabeth. She's hilarious and sweet, a good sport too. Koopmans and I tease her, and she makes fun of herself, for her rather slow rate of responding to tweets. She's slower than I am with it. But we love her nonetheless.

It's hard to believe CassaStar launched four years ago, Alex. I hope you feel great pride every day, for so many accomplishments.

  11. Do you ever sleep? For myself, your energy and generosity gives me on-going attacks of inadequacy.
And yes, you are an author. Among other labels.

  12. I love Daft Punk. Been a fan for years. Harder, better is one of my fave songs by them (not the Kanye version). Inception and How to Train your Dragon were mind blowing. Watched them at home but I will be see Dragon 2 in theatres this year. Liz rocks and so glad her boys turned to God. Congrats on your novel being nearly four years old Alex. That's what happens when you go for your dreams.

  13. I am enjoying the retro fun facts and also the bloggers you introduce to us everyday.

Btw...just as a matter of curiousity Alex, how many hours do you sleep at night (I know that you go to bed early) I am sure you must be waking up early as you pack in so much in a single day.

  15. I started blogging in 2010 - an on/off journey which in turn led to freelance blogging in 2012.
Indian Rupee become the 5th currency in the world to have a symbol.
I purchased the print edition of your book from an Indian online store. :)
I listen to daft punk but can't say they are my favourites - I prefer the bands from 70's to 90's. Inception was a cool movie and Iron man was entertaining.

  16. Hi Alex - frankly I don't know how you do what you do .. but the clones are there I know!!

Cassa Star was a great read and 2010 wasn't too far away was it ..

    Cheers Hilary

  17. Congratulations all over again on CassaStar!

I hadn't realised iPads were only four years old - or should I say "already" four years old!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I also can't believe that it's been four years since the CassaStar debut! I am following Elizabeth, and will have to visit her again soon. Thanks for all you do Alex, and it's amazing how much you've accomplished in such a short time!

  19. Four years! Amazing.

I have to admit, it's nice to hear that you, the Man Who Needs No Hyperlink, was overwhelmed yesterday. Makes us humanoids feel a little better about their feeble efforts, LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I purchased a paperback copy of Cassastar via Book Depository but haven't posted a review YET.
Reason - I want to first get my hands on CassaFire and CassaStorm, complete the trilogy, then post the review... I suppose by then, you'd have another book or two out...
The i-Pad was only released in 2010? Hey, I don't feel so "techno-backwards" anymore... LOL
Elizabeth is a wonderful lady. Lots of fun. I had Charlie's Scribes over at my place and they did a great job!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Alex, this proves that old manuscripts should not be binned. I'm pleased you kept yours.
2010 was good for Elizabeth, too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Long overdue but finally bought Cassastar after reading your thoughts over the last year, Alex. Reads like some of the great works that first got me into SF, many decades ago.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Inception was a great movie. Congrats to Kyra, the series sounds great!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I was at an "inward" place in 2010...I don't remember any of those movies! I better do some investigating! Hooray for thirty-year-old manuscripts!

    ReplyDelete
  25. LG, I will look up the photographer!

    Yvonne, yes it was!

Donna, of course I stopped by! And thank you.

SK, Inception topped my list that year.

    Elizabeth, so you are welcome.

Damy and Robyn, thanks. Proud of the friends I've made here!

Elephant, don't judge by my insanity.

Rachna, I do go to bed early, and I am up really early.

Rekha, and I thank you for buying my book! You started blogging right after I did.

    Hilary, thanks!

    Thanks, Julie!

Carol, yes I was overwhelmed with both events going on at the same time.

Michelle, thank you!! If you want the others, that must mean you liked it.

Fanny, I'm really happy I kept it!

    Roland, thanks!! I appreciate that.

  26. I see everyone questions when, if it all, you sleep. :-) Just part of your Ninja skills repertoire, I suppose!

Wow, 4 years already since the iPad. It seems like just yesterday that I was buying my first laptop and thinking how awesome THAT was. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It always amazes me to hear you say you didn't want to be a writer since you are naturally so good at it!

Thank you for the shoutout! :D

    ReplyDelete
  28. Should have guessed Cassastar would be C.

Inception was a great movie. I went back and saw it multiple times, and each time I saw something new.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It is crazy to think that was already four years ago. Time flies. Really cool that you found such success with your books.

I was wondering about that Diablo expansion. I played three after it came to PlayStation.

  30. Hi Alex! You never forget your first novel. My first novel, Calico, did the same thing you described. It became a bestseller and spawned many other story ideas for me as well.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Four years! Seems like yesterday. How time flies. Haven't played a game in a long time. I laugh at the thought. Ha.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow, didn't know that was the average cost of houses in 2010! Did see all those movies. And CassaStorm is a great read! So many blogs to visit, so little time...I'm off...

    ReplyDelete
  33. The man, the legend, and the guy I think is a robot - Alex! I still don't know how you do it. Write, teach, music and blog. Blog extremely well! Thanks for the tip about Feedly. I'm spoiled by GFC. One click (sometimes) and done.

ipad has only been around 4 years? It seems like forever. And, you've written two more sequels since then. Amazing.

  36. What an adventure you've been on since 2010. I hope it just keeps getting better.

Kind of amazing (and disturbing) to see the difference between the average home price here compared to the others you have posted. Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  37. That is so cool that your 30-year-old manuscript became a book and was the launching point for two other books!

    Loved your fun facts!

  38. Great hob with CassaStar, love how it developed synergically instead of trying to fit it in the all-too-popular trilogy format!

  39. I remember when you first book launched, it doesn't seem like four year to me either. Time is just flying by.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I can't believe the increase in house prices. It is incredible.

I have How to Train Your Dragon, a favourite movie.

I also have all the Cassa books.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Still haven't seen Inception! I'm sure I'll find it confusing...

Wow, 2010 seems like just yesterday still...

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's been 4 years since CassaStar came out? Wow. Seems like a year or two ago. I remember the excitement well!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yay for Cassastar!

    Thanks for the mention, Alex.

Elizabeth is great! I really enjoy her blog. Nice, funny lady. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. What made you hold on to the manuscript? Which by the way,I am glad you did.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow good for you and writing was your calling! I have seen some of the films but not all Inception was quite good. 2010 was not the best year but memorable. My mom went downhill with dementia and lived with us. My spouse found out he could never work again due to his rheumatoid arthritis. he wanted to attend school but it was too much with all the stress and his severe ADHD. Yup not a great year...but it passed, like a kidney stone but it did pass:)

    ReplyDelete
  46. iPads have only been around for 4 years??? Wow. I love your fun facts! And how cool to be a best-selling author! Kudos.

  48. You are doing an AMAZING job, Alex. Just amazing. I always know you're out there if I need help or a question answered. Even when you're feeling overwhelmed, you're still there for others!

Brandon, it's short but really cool.

    Allison, that's cool.

    Elsie, give Feedly a try.

Cold, making money was a bonus.

Andrea, I just intended one book...

    Jo, and I appreciate that!

Melissa, you're welcome. One more month!

Ivy, it just ended up in a box with some other stuff I didn't want to sort.

    Birgit, I'm sorry.

    Heather, thank you!

  51. 2010 was a great year for movies with Inception being at the top of my list, followed by Tangled (such a great movie!)

I love Elizabeth--she is just hysterical and I love that she has lots of boys just like I do! She can totally relate!

It's been four years, huh? And look at all you've accomplished! Amazing! :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh, congrats for being an Amazon Best Seller! Way to go, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love Elizabeth to pieces. She is funny and warm and always has a kind word or encouragement for everyone!

And way to go Alex, Amazon Best Seller!!! That's amazing. Rock on Ninja, rock on!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Four years? Wow. Your first book came out the same year as my son was born. Must be a very lucky year. :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Whoda thunk one book would turn into success?! And in only four years. The student has become the master rather quickly. Nice!

Let's see...2010...oh yeah, that was the year I became eligible to retire from Federal Gov't. service...but still at it (because my first book just came, instead of four years ago!)

Saw original Tron in theaters, loved it then. Legacy, yeah not so much but then watched original and yeah, not so much.

Latest books: Sirens The Sirens of Titans (Vonnegut) Banana Bamboozle (Becky Clark) just finished The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld (Justin Hocking) and The Assassin's Heart (J.A. Kazimer.)

Congrats, Alex...keep up the pace and we shall follow!

    ReplyDelete
  56. wow, goes a long way to show that stories never die, that's such an inspirational "behind the scene" story, thanks for sharing it! and 2010 was also when I finished the book I'm launching now... except I wasted all the following years on submission... :-( (luckily I kept writing!)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Wow! Alex, it has been four years! I think you can truly say you have made the most of those years! You continue to be an inspiration to us all.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I felt overwhelmed yesterday... I cannot imagine how you felt!!!!

I am not currently following Elizabeth, but I see her comments on many of the blogs I read. I am going right now to check her out... :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Fantastic to see Elizabeth highlighted here - she's such a wonderful, supportive friend. I can't believe CassaStar is 4 years old!

    ReplyDelete
  60. No surprise that you picked Cassastar for your C word :)4 years have gone by fast and look at all you have accomplished! We started remodeling our house in 2010 and we are still remodeling....

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wow! It is hard to believe CassaStar came out four years ago. Nice learning more about Elizabeth! :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Can't believe it's only been four years since iPad was released. Three books in less than four years is pretty great for you. It doesn't seem like Tangled is four years old either. My daughter and I love that movie.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I like the theme - even though 2010 is only a few years ago, I guess it could be 'retro' especially given how quickly my memory goes nowadays. Stopping over from SlimDoggy and the A to Z Challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The housing price increase kinda makes you throw up in your mouth in disgust lol from one to 3 and now a fourth at your sea.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Christine, lucky indeed!

Dean, re-watching the original made you realize it really wasn't a good movie.

    EE, good for you!

    Thanks, Betty.

    Siv, that's funny.

  66. It's so exciting when our plans get disrupted by unexpected detours, even if it's so many years later. Congratulations on all your writing success, Alex! It must be a fabulous journey. 69. Back in 2010! Man, how time flies. Prashant did put up that interview with me over on his blog in case you wanted to check it out at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  70. First iPad in 2010? Wow! And now they're almost like appendages.

    ReplyDelete
  71. CassaStar, Iron Man II, and Tron: Legacy, and the first iPad, eh? Looks like 2010 was about 50/50 for sci-fi success, so good thing you were there tip the scales the right way. :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. The Tron Legacy soundtrack is one of my go-to writing playlists. :)
Wow, I just started revising my first novel in 2010--and I'm still revising it ... I'll try to remain calm about that.
Meanwhile A to Z is sure keeping me busy!

    ReplyDelete
  73. 2010 was a great year in books and movies! Congrats again on all your success with CassaStar! A 30 year old rewrite is just awesome - gives me hope for a 12 year old draft sitting in my closet. Someday, I'll tackle that novel again.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'm playing catch up as wasn't home much to blog! Today will be devoted only to blogging and blog hopping! I get my years so mixed up sometimes, it's hard to remember what I liked best about any of them, lol. I think the things that "marked" me the most about 2010 were that my children left home and we became empty-nesters, cried for two weeks, then our lovely dog Laydi, decided if the kids were gone, she wasn't hanging around either and so left us, and then we had a lovely young Frenchman named Gael (he's in the friends video on my A to Z "A" post)come to spend three fantastic weeks with us. I cried when he went home...

    ReplyDelete
  75. I looked at the house price, and gasped, and then looked at the year...and realized there was nothing wrong with your math! LOL.
Yeah, I gotta watch the burn-out thing, too. Did way too much yesterday...Great advice at the A-Z today.

  77. Wow -- I HAVE been out of the loop. I completely forgot about A-to-Z!!! Glad I could at least pop in on a day with a FABULOUS "C" book!

I hope you are doing great, Alex! I know your A-to-Z will be wonderful this month. I hope to be able to get around more often at some point in the near future, but in the meantime, let me offer you prayers and tons of warm wishes, my fellow Christian guitarist sci-fi writer guy!

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. It's been four years since CassaStar debuted, hard to believe. Seems like only yesterday, but for you I'm sure it seems longer (and shorter). Interesting points for 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Of course C would be for CassaStar! Nothing else would've been appropriate. ;)

And 2010 is already considered retro? Oh, boy! lol

    ReplyDelete
  80. Daft Punk - Tron : Legacy Soundtrack is Gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Cassafire was written 30 years ago? Or at least the basis, right? WOW! A lot of cool movies that year, too. ;)

    Congrats Melissa and Kyra! :)

(I, too, should post a disclaimer about not getting around to all my friends. I'm trying to get to as many new peeps on the linky list as possible...)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Look how far you've come in 4 years! May the next 4 be even better!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I remember CassaStar and your one book idea. . . but because of your clamouring audience, you had to satisfy us? Right?

So I say, keep it up, you've got clones, there should be time for writing. Or else you need mini Alex to whip those clones in shape.

    ReplyDelete
  84. MJ, that's been the most amazing part of the journey.

Tony, you're on to my evil plans...

    Charles, I will!

Bob, was worried for a moment which side CassaStar fell on!

    Tyrean, you should!

Lisa, I'm sorry that year made you cry so much!

    Tina, that's good to know.

    Chris, thank you!

Chrys, wait until I do 2013...

  85. I love your Cassa series, Alex. Those books deserve to be made into movies!

    ReplyDelete
  86. 2010 was a great year for you with writing and also the beginning. You now have 3 books and working on #4! Congrats in all your accomplishments!

    ReplyDelete
  87. 2010--what a great year for movies. Inception and Tron...yes! In January 2010 I made a new years resolution to write a book (never thought about being a writer before...it was more of a bucket list item). I started writing and couldn't stop. Great year. :)

    ReplyDelete
  88. I love that you resurrected a thirty year old story and made it a well loved book.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Of course C is for CassaStar. What else could it possibly be for? That's awesome that it was an old manuscript your resurrected. That was the same story for Moonless, but it was only ten years old, not 30.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I like to listen to Daft Punk - Tron: Legacy Soundtrack while I go to sleep. My wife likes the TV on. I can't sleep with the conversations going on, so I put this on my mp3 player and go to sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  91. 2010 was a great year- had my son, started writing. It doesn't get much better than that.

    ReplyDelete
  92. My third trip to Israel was in 2010, with an unexpected stop in Vienna on the way home.

Sometimes a total or radical rewrite is just what a really old manuscript needs. Depending on the state of the original, sometimes you can't just work around what's already there.

    ReplyDelete
  93. DG, yes, I'll blame my fans.

    Thanks, Randi Lee!

Ilima, that makes two of us.

Crystal, more writers should go back to those old stories.

Someday an A-Z party! How fabulous would that be...

Off to meet Elizabeth-thank you Captain~

  95. Magnificent on CassaStar. I like it when stories that are with us for a long time are given new life.

My husband told me about the Diablo III expansion. He prefaced it with "I'm weak..." He'd been trying to convince himself not to buy it. :)

  98. Home prices are a wee bit different than 1969... But it's a good year, because it brought us YOU!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  101. Wow, just four years ago? It's weird how it feels like a lifetime ago, yet just like yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Inception was such a film. Frost/Nixon was my favorite that year.

Funny you listed Bioware expansion DLC as the games of 2010! Mass Effect 2 itself came out that year, and is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Playdead Studios's LIMBO also came out, and was amazing.

    Enjoy Reaper of Souls, Alex!

We stayed at Give Kids the World (absolutely amazing place), and got to check out Disney, Universal, and Sea World. Mickey's handler gave Mickey a pin to give my nephew. To this day, he says Mickey is his best friend. Cannot wait to take them back!

  110. So the ipad is only four years old? Strange, feels like it's been around forever.

  111. Carrie-Anne, no way I could work with what was there.

Loni, tell him to just buy it!

    Thanks, Liz!

Kathe, you're my friend - of course!

John, that was also a cool game.

    Haneen, yes it is!

    Yolanda, I'm beyond exhausted...

    Ayden, that's wonderful.

    Sharon, they can!

Moody, I'm on my fourth one, so it feels like forever.

  112. 4 years?! Jeez, now I feel old.

  113. I'm figuring that by now you're about buried. BUT, you're doing great. Love comparing some of those stats from year to year.

  114. The other day I was using an old iPad and marveling at how slooooow it was. I can't believe it was less than four years old!

  115. Well, we're all glad you decided to get the story publish and the rest of the series. If not, we might not have IWSG as well as not know you.

  117. Hi human, Alex,

Interesting angle. Nice of you to torture me with a retro version. Yes, human, I'm kidding.

I'm happy for Elizabeth and her two oldest boys even though I cannot stand any form of religion.

Plenty of great info on here. And the irony, I have spent over ten hours commenting on the A to Z. Yes, I truly wish the darned thing would end. It's stressful and frankly, runs way too long.

You do well, my human friend.

  119. Man, what a great year for movies! I think I have them all on bluray except How to Train Your Dragon. I still haven't seen it - *hangs head in shame*

  120. I remember how cool it was when a coworker showed me an iPad. I eventually got one, too.

    Great book news.

Yay for the start of a series with two other books that followed.

  121. its cool that you remember that start...even if you did not want to be an author...look where it took you...saw all those movies as well...

  122. Sometimes it is just a small note that makes my day. Elizabeth Seckman and her two boys--knowing the Lord. Can't beat that.

  123. CassaStar is a great choice for "C"!

Early in 2010 I was winding down my promo for The Desert Hedge Murders. After that, I must have taken a brain break because I can't recall anything else of interest.

  124. Seriously, the first iPad was released in 2010?! It seems like they have been around so much longer than that! I really like your retro theme this year.

  125. Now that's a year to celebrate & honor! I think the author gig works for ya:) Inception is such a cool film and one of my favorite soundtracks of Hans!

  127. Elizabeth is totally awesome!

Aaaand it won't be long until I start reading CassaStar at long last! woo!

  128. Cassastar rocked! it is one of my favorite books and series.

Loved Tangled and Inception, they are awesome films.

  129. I'm going to rent Inception. We watched it at the movies and that's the only time I saw it. Great flic!

  130. Loved Inception, but even more than that, I still adore Tangled. My 9yo daughter forces it upon us every 4-6 weeks, and it never fails to make us smile and sing along.

2010 -- my son {my hero} was 17 and in his junior year of high school. We had a rough time of it, as we had taken in an abused teen, and she really made life really difficult. Not all her fault; things just are the way they are. That wasn't the most awesome year for my family, but we made it through and are better for it in how close it brought us together. Lots of love has been exchanged since then, words said that needed to be heard, and bonds strengthened. 2010 might have been our worst year ever as a family, yet we gained so much in its aftermath, how can I possibly regret it?

Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I hate remembering bad times, but love thinking back on how awesome my family is for making it through the dark. There is always light at the end of the tunnel; we are among the lucky few who found it while holding to each other with love.

  131. These posts are great! Sadly, I think I myself am "retro" because I only just found out about and read "Cassastar" for myself last week! And it is AWESOME ! Love the characters, am currently about 1/4 of the way through Cassafire :- ) Loving A to Z because of things like this - discovering new books, yay!

  133. Jurassic Park is one of my all-time favorite movies.

And I cannot wait for Secret of the Souls by Terri Rochenski to come out! :D

  134. Great post. Love the fun facts. 2010 was a good year.

  135. I was intrigued by your novel Cassastar and I went in search of it in MP3 format… finding nothing. But, what's wrong with reading the book instead? You might ask. Nothing much, if you happen to possess a pair of good functioning eyes — but I'm blind and there doesn't seem to be anywhere that I can download this book. Of course, if there was an audio format, then you can bet your voice that Audible would get their hooks into at first… falling into that inaccessible .AA format at their own ridiculous prices! Oh, if you're wondering, this was dictated using speech recognition software!
