Writing Tips from A Beer For The Shower, CassaFire Sale Results, and Ninja News!

You are in for a treat today! We have some expert writing advice from Brandon Meyers and Bryan Pedas, the genius minds behind A Beer For The Shower. They also have a new book out, Empirical Evidence: A Novelette. It’s there first venture into science fiction and it’s free today through Wednesday, February 12 on Amazon.

Take it away, Brandon and Bryan!

Hey all, we're Brandon and Bryan from A Beer for the Shower, and as co-authors of multiple novels that have been praised by people that are not our parents, we wanted to share some of our favorite writing tips for you today.

Forget what you heard about writing with your heart and crafting what you love. That's clearly nonsense. Here's what you really need to do to reach success as a writer.

1. Don't be afraid to give up

Did you know that success means hard work? Well, trying is hard. Really hard. So if your novel doesn't sell on the first try, you should probably give up and take on something more meaningful like crochet, or start a cat collection. Bryan's currently up to 8!

Doesn't this little glimpse of paradise look better than "trying"?

2. Criticism is for the weak

If someone tells you something like, "Your novel is good but it needs work in a few spots" what they're really saying is "I hate you and I spit in your face." Also, they're probably just jealous of your infallible talent. Rather than humbly accept their criticism and better your writing skills, you should probably hire street thugs to beat them into a coma. It's only fair for them having the downright audacity to offer you their honest criticism.

3. Write to fads

Writing a truly unique story that comes from the heart is fun and all, but it's no guarantee that your book will sell. But you know what will sell? Fads. Just find whatever's popular now, write a complete ripoff with one or two minor changes, and reap in the sweet, sweet benefits of selling out!

Cheers and stay classy, guys,
Bryan and Brandon

"I hate it when authors come to schools and tell the kids write from your heart. I don't think I've ever written a single word from my heart. I write to entertain the audience." - R.L. Stein, literary genius

CassaFire’s 99 Cents Promotion Results

Today, February 10, is the last day to grab my second book, CassaFire, for 99 cents on Amazon.

The sale started on February 4 and my publisher ran several ads.

The results?

Nancy Thompson caught it late Friday night while it was still rising the charts at #194! (That’s #194 out of ALL the books on Amazon!)

I caught it the following morning at #216:

I was also on several top 100 authors lists:

(Ahead of some dude name Asimov but behind some hack named Heinlein – the nerve!)

I didn’t catch it at its peak, but it was number 1, 2, or 3 in many categories, including Space Opera, and in the top ten for Science Fiction. CassaFire’s rise also bumped up sales of the other two, CassaStar and CassaStorm, placing them on several top 100 lists.

I was blown away!!!

Huge thanks to the hundreds who posted about it, sent out Tweets, mentioned it on Google+, and commented on Facebook. (I’m not even on Facebook – that is too wild!)

Mick from EBook Bargains UK caught the ad on BookBub, and since he’d seen my comments on Anne R. Allen’s blog many times, he grabbed it and added it to nine of their country listings as well. Thanks, Mick!

Once again, my heartfelt thanks. I am blessed to be a part of such an awesome community of writers and bloggers.

Final day Tweets:

“Top Gun Meets Battlestar Galactica” Alex J. Cavanaugh’s CassaFire on sale .99 http://tinyurl.com/qaz7kxr #scifi #99cents

Reminiscent of the action-driven stories of Robert A. Heinlein's early fiction - Library Journal. CassaFire only .99 http://tinyurl.com/qaz7kxr

Think Brandon and Bryan’s advice rocks? Ready to take up a cat collection? (Be sure to download their new book!) Feeling anti-Valentine’s? Enjoy last week’s IWSG? And anyone else experience great success with a book at a discounted price?

Working on my manuscript this week, so no Wednesday post. But the Ninja will be lurking…

  2. So glad the sale has been going so well. Shouting out about it on my blog today. Hope you get lots of writing done this week. I'm off today and hoping to get some done too.

  3. Beer guys: You had me at it's nonsense to write from the heart :)

You guys are like Tony Robbins to me... only I'm not sure who's Robin and who's Tony?

A-CAV, congrats on making so many lists - and rocking them at the same time.

That is awesome news, but you know what, you little Ninja, (grabs and squeezes his cute cheeks *the ones next to his nose*) you bloody well deserve it!

You are such a supporter of the community, it's only proper that the community stands to hook a brother up!

PS... I hope you're still working on your dance moves :)

  4. Love the boys from Beer for the Shower:) And Valentines day isn't big on my list of priorities this year but a box of leftover chocolates in front of the tv sounds good.

  5. I am so impressed with your sales, Alex. You deserve it. And #194... so awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Wow #194 congratulations! I bought my copy this week. Plus I posted and scheduled out your final tweets.

Sounds like you've been busy, Alex. Congrats on the surge. You deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Congratulations Alex - pleased your sales are doing well. You deserve it.
The problem is that you can't have success if you give up, and I like writing from my heart. I'm a sure loser, but fads come and go.
That's another one of my problems - I'm not good at taking advice, but deep down I know B&B are right!

    ReplyDelete
  12. And now we know why the boys are so successful!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Congrats to you and CassaFire, and to Bryan and Brandon! Happy Monday!

I'm working on mine too. YaY for the chance to entertain the masses. COOL!

  19. Way to go, Alex! And while the idea of just quitting and taking up another hobby was (probably) tongue-in-cheek, sometimes it's not a bad idea to step away for a short time and recharge the writing batteries.

    ReplyDelete
  20. #194 is simply amazing. Congratulations again! If anything says "keep writing books," this is surely it.

And thanks for having us! It was a lot fun. I'm kinda eager to see if anyone takes our advice literally. You know there's always "that guy" on a sarcastic blog posting who just doesn't quite get the sarcasm...

  21. Some days I feel like I am collecting cats.

Congrats on the huge success of your book!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  24. That is awesome how you flew up the charts so much. Amazing indeed.

And hmmm nope, 2 cats are my limit, no cat collection here haha

    ReplyDelete
  25. You ARE a success for sure. Climbing the charts for goodness sake. That is awesome.

My sister has 10 cats. I just have two--outside. Thank you very much. :)

    ReplyDelete

Teresa, thanks, and that's a lot of cats...

Sheri, thanks! It was probably one of my excited tweets.

  35. Congrats Alex, that's a massive achievement!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Congrats on sales, Alex. And that is advice is, um,(cough)...amazing! Actually, it is hilarious. What time does the humane society open?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Congrats on the incredible numbers. What lofty company you keep on the charts. I'm pumped for Valentine's Day because we're visiting my daughter in Boston.

    ReplyDelete

THAT is the kind of reaction a writer can only dream of. Fad writing for me!

    ReplyDelete
  50. AWESOME!! Way to move up the ranks! Woot woot.

Those beer drinking showerers are some funny guys. Best advice I've gotten in a long time. I think I shall take their advice and go buy me another cat...or maybe just nab one from the neighborhood.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'll keep in mind all that wonderful advice.

Congrats, Alex! That's awesome how well the sale went!

  60. Rip off what's selling - Harry Potter meets Twilight... how about Harry Potter meets The Walking Dead???? That has Bestseller written all over it. Who doesn't want to read about magic and zombies??? I am scrapping my current project and getting to work right away on this fabulous "new" idea!!! Thanks for the advice guys!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Useful tips but no, no cat collection for me. Unless you have a big yard, that's a lot of catboxes. (or cages to clean)

Congrats on the fantastic stats! Nice to know you're back to writing another novel. You know you like it.

  67. 194?!?!?!!?!

ALEX... that is crazzzzzzy awesome... you've got to be freaking. What a surreal life you lead. Wow. And this from a guy who wasn't sure he even wanted to write... it's pretty astonishing. And yet strangely not...

Okay. B and B are hilarious. I absolutely LOVE their posts. They honestly are the best thing since I discovered Nutella. (Which I won't let myself eat anymore, lol... so they'll have to do.)

    Congrats again, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  68. That's some...they gave very interesting advice. Rip-offs do sell sometimes but the consequences of getting caught sometimes...no thanks. Fun post though and I'm getting the free e-book. Can add it to the free e-book reading challenge I'm doing this year. Will check out anti-valentine giveaway by Robyn. You're welcome Alex, I was glad to help with IWSG. Just 18 away from 2000 followers Alex, amazing. Congrats on making the top 300 for CassaFire on Amazon. That is beyond amaze balls. Good eye Nancy.

Also thanks for checking out my post on the Moonless blogfest and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have a great day Alex.

  69. Worried?!?!? Never fear, Ninja friend. Remember you said you trusted the dragon.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Congrats for being 194!!! That is great! Love the beer guys. I think I could write from the heart, make cheap money and be into the fad with an Anti Valentine feeling. I would write a romance with a vampire whom I met on Valentine's-first and last time as he literally rips my heart out sucks me dry and I then become a travelling Zombie salesman who devours all the people who actually open the door for me:)

    ReplyDelete
  71. I don't write from my heart; I write -with- my heart. There's no other way to make the pain authentic, and that's what it's all about, right?

    Awesome for Cassa!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Congratulations, Alex!

Great advice from Brandon and Bryan...I'll have to check out their blog. :)

Good luck with the manuscript, Alex!

  73. Robin, make it happen!

Morgan, surreal really describes it. Never imagined I would duel it out with Lord Baldernot either.

    Sheena-kay, your post was hilarious.

    Al, I trust you!

Birgit, I think you need to write that.

Thanks, everyone! It was a wild weekend.

  138. Loved the guest post today . . . I can tell those are two wild and crazy guys :-) And because I follow you through email, I never realized I didn't follow you through Google (I don't use it all), so I followed you there now, too. HUGE congrats on your successful 99 cent sale--let's hope your books stay at the top where they belong~cheers

  141. I'd never seen that R.L. Stein quote. Interesting to hear this perspective - so different from the norm. Huge congrats on the successful sale and those awesome Amazon rankings!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Congrats on those amazing numbers! WOO HOO! *bows*

I can't say I write from the heart... it's more like I write from the gut. It just doesn't feel right to say that I have serial killer stories coming from the heart. Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  143. God I love the comic :D :D :D
Welcome to A to Z theme reveal! Looking forward to finding out what your theme will be. Cheers!

  144. He Ninja dude,

Indeed, the writing advice of Brandon and Bryan is most notable. However, I don't think trying need be hard work. The best thing to do is to write without pressure or preconceived notions.

Your promotion was a magical success. Your altruism is admirable. I just find there is way too much on here to fully absorb. I know you will understand.

All the best and good, very early morning from a drenched, flooded England.

  145. Bryan and Brandon cracked me up!

Congrats on your sale success! That is amazing!!!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Glad the sale of your book was a smash. I am halfway done with the
first one and meant to buy the second but, I had some unexpected
events come up so I missed the sale. I will still buy it when I'm done with the first as now I have to finish the series. Just the way I am..

Enjoyed reading Brandon and Bryan's advice.

    ReplyDelete
  147. That was hilarious. those guys rock. And congrats on the success.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Congratulations on the book's success. Hopefully it will translate to sales of your other books, too. Thanks for being such an inspiration for the rest of us.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Congratulations, Alex!

Also enjoyed the "advice." I think giving up is always the path to success. And I'm waiting for that vampire magic school novel.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Ruth, it was a different perspective, wasn't it?

Jennifer, I would be worried if you did!

    Csenge, it's complicated. As usual.

Truedessa, sorry you missed it. Hope you are enjoying the first one.

Ken, it did make a difference with the other two.

    Thanks, guys!

  151. Hey Alex. Love seeing that your books saw some great rank climbing.

If anyone deserves it, Ninja Captain, it's you.

The advice provided was a bit different from the norm, but hey, to each thug and cat collector be their own lol!!

    Yvonne, that made me chuckle.

    Thanks, guys!

  159. Brandon and Bryan's advice definitely rocks! Love that comic strip. haha. Not sure about a cat collection, though I already have a starter kit of two. :D Glad to hear you're working on a new manuscript! Excited to see what you come up with next!

  160. Reminiscent of Heinlein! Wowza. Well done, pAl. Hope yer gettin' some good work done, today.

    ReplyDelete
  161. The Beer guys was the laugh I needed today! Love the R.L. Stein quote, too. Gotta go revamp my entire ms, but first to reread some top sellers.

Good luck on your new work!

    ReplyDelete
  162. Brandon and Bryan are crazy. A collection of cats might not go over well in my cramped space of an apartment. If I ever won the lottery, I wouldn't mind opening a rescue center for animals though.

That mention of R.L. Stein takes me back to my tween years when I had a bunch of horror books...and lost (or maybe somebody stole it. Who knows?!) my favorite one. That was a downer. Now, I want to dig them out and read them, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Holy moly you have a lot of comments! Loved the advice from the beer guys, especially the 2nd one. Congrats on your sale. that's totally awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  171. Love Brandon and Bryan's advice. It simply rocks. Instead of cats, can I start collecting rabbits or
    parrots?

    Congrats on the book sale.

    ReplyDelete
  172. So....how does writing about a toilet covered in shag carpet fit in?

    ReplyDelete
  173. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on the ranking on Amazon! What a kick that must have been to see it. Screen shots all around.

As for the advice guys, I started off crocheting cats, figuring if I ever quit, I'd be instantly able to write well. I'll let you know how that turns out.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Congratulations! Also, writing from the heart is useless, unless you introduce your heart to your head. In high school, they tell students anyone can write. Perhaps. However, not everyone can make a living at it.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Love the ridiculous Beer advice, and CONGRATULATIONS on your book's Amazon success! That's an absolutely huge accomplishment... I'm so happy for you!!

    ReplyDelete
  176. Brandon and Bryan always rock! I had to laugh about the critique equaling spitting in your face and hating you. Yikes! Congratulations on your climb up the lists, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  177. TBM, yeah as many as a Blog Blitz.

    Rachna, Parrots would be great!

    JJ, that is very true.

    Thanks, guys!!

    ReplyDelete
  178. Alex, you are seriously awesome. I think your success shows that slow and steady wins the race. You know how to do writing right. Thanks for the inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  179. Bravo to Brandon and Bryan for keeping it real! Cheers guys, so fun to read-I needed that and another Cold Snap-(name of my beer).

    Stay warm my friend!

  180. Congrats on the blast of CassaFire Alex. I was one of the 99c cheapskates who bought it! Started reading along with a dozen other ebooks, and like the beginning. I'll get to the end eventually but no worries, I bought it!!

Love the expert advice on writing. I'm still chuckling.

  183. Hi Alex! I really enjoyed this post! Brandon's and Bryan's writing advice was very funny ~ with more than a little truth in it! As a former elementary teacher, I've heard a lot of authors speak to children about writing. They also say to write what you know. Congratulations on all the awesome press that you are receiving! Have a happy weekend!

Its gas, Bryan and Brandon have it made. they've managed to figure out how to cartoon in a specific way which folk like. Their classy cartooning is so unique. Congratulations on the Cassahits on Amazon Alex.

  192. Tara, I hope you see a big bump! Did you send out Tweets?
