Thursday I had two surprises! An amazing review from Bob at Beauty in Ruins in which he absolutely nailed everything I was trying to convey in the story. There was also a wonderful tribute from my buddy Roland Yeomans that is sure to make you laugh.
My next tour stop is actually Sunday, and I have the honor of appearing on Anne R Allen’s Blog. Her site is a Writer’s Digest 101 Best Websites for Writers winner, and she brings in some top best-selling authors and professionals. And oh yeah, me!

Those are all great films and belong on the top ten list. My personal favourite is Clockwork Orange though. Probably because it had a profound effect on me when I was young.

ReplyDeleteInteresting selection. I enjoyed the Planet of the Apes book. The original series with Charleton Heston was cool in its day with its own unique twist, but the most recent one was closer to the book.

Great list, I'd point out that technically, 2001 wasn't based on the book, as the script and the novel were written together. But the novel actually explains all that weirdness at the end, and probably should be read before seeing the movie imo.

ReplyDeleteI naturally love really vintage sci-fi films, like Fritz Lang's Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon) and Georges Méliès's short films like Le Voyage Dans la Lune and Le Voyage à Traverse l'Impossible. The latter film is has a very similar storyline to Lune, only this time they're travelling to the Sun.
Bladerunner is an excellent choice of the Geek Twins.

ReplyDeleteI wonder why the Geek Twins didn't give Jules Vern any love? I mean sure the movie is old, but I thought 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was hugely influential to me as a child in liking the genre. And what about Logan's Run? That was pretty good too.
I know many people were put off by how much of Children of Men was changed or cut for the film. How did you feel about the movie as an adaptation of James's work, Alex? I agree that independently it has a very strong tone.

I didn't know "Clockwork Orange" nor "Children of Men" were adapted from books. Given how sick the former is, I doubt I'd want to read the material that it's based on but if "Children of Men" is anything like its printed counterpart, then I'd be willing to give it a try. The movie version was a little off-putting at first when I watched it but it didn't take long for me to enjoy the film and it's among my two favorites on this list...the other being "Jurassic Park."

I love that the brothers picked my all time favourite S/F movie BLADE RUNNER. I love that movie. I even read the book! It was the very first movie we ever rented for our then-new video player, back when our 40+ year old sons were kids. Wow, that was almost 30 years ago. I love the music too! This would all be so wonderful, except now I'm reminded just how old I am!

While I adore the 1984 novel, I don't think the movie did it real justice. It was a fine movie, though, and V for Vendetta was practically a carbon copy (loved that one, too, though!)

ReplyDeleteJurassic Park was great. Didn't think Dune translated to screen well in any of the versions so I disagree with some of your commenters on that one. I haven't seen some of the others on your list...

Jurassic Park was the first adult genre fiction book I read (I was kind of hooked on the movie as a kid), and from there it kind of spiralled into the fully-fledged fantasy geek that I am today :)
