Caught this on Blastr. Fans at Creation Entertainment's Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas ranked Trek movie from best to worst. Below are the results, from best to worst:
As a die-hard Trek fan, that really surprised me. I would flip the first two around (First Contact will always be my favorite) but I’d rank Into Darkness much higher. I’ll have to see it again, but I’d probably place it third. I won’t even protest the inclusion of Galaxy Quest, because that film just rocked. What do you guys think of the ranking?
Principal photography began on Christopher Nolan’s next film, Interstellar. According to JoBlo, “The new script chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”
The film will star Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, John Lithgow, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Irwin. It’s set for release November 7, 2014.Yes, I'm excited!
SyFy usually produces good series. Now, if only they could spare more than a hundred bucks for their original movies…

The Star Trek chart is sending my in a "wh-wh-whaat"! mode. I felt that list is the worst, the first couple are correct. Floored on the last, it was a good film. I cannot believe that if fans want to see more films and keep this franchise breathing, well don't throw this under the bus wheel. Agreed Galaxy Quest is a wonderful film and it pays homage to many science fiction films like Star Trek...
ReplyDeleteAgree with numbers one and two, debatable on the rest. I don't like the parallel reality storyline they've come up with for the new movies. Seems like a cop out for me. Of course, a lot of younger viewers probably haven't seen the earlier films.

ReplyDeleteI'd have put both of the new alt-timeline Star Trek movies higher, I thought they were quite good. A lot of the Next Gen movies didn't feel 'big' enough to merit a movie, a couple felt like extended TV episodes, but First Contact was good..best of the next gen movies and in my top 3 overall I'm sure. Galaxy Quest could contend for a top 3 spot.

ReplyDeleteI was just in Las Vegas last weekend, not that it is really relevant. Sorry to admit it, but I am not a Star Trek fan. I also can't help Robyn. As for the trivia questions, the best I can do is #6 - Jupiter One?. I guess I am not to useful here today :(

Galaxy Quest is one of our FAVORITE movies. It's just THAT good.

Not sure about the rankings, but I loved Galaxy Quest. It's one of the few movies I've seen multiple times.
ReplyDeleteKind of shocked that Generations wasn't the very bottom of that list. And yeah, First Contact is my all-time favorite ST movie, too. It completely and totally freaked me out the first time I watched it (teenager alone at home at night, not my brightest move ever), but no way was I going to turn it off!

We just bought all of the original episodes and the original movies. My preschooler LOVES them (yay!) but wants to watch Star Trek the Motion Picture over and over again. The beginning part is fun but the last half is ... well ... really stupid.

ReplyDeleteI'd put the first Star Trek movie higher. I watched the original TV program and was crushed when they canceled it. So when that movie hit the theaters, it was a Big Thing. The transporter scene still gets me.
Also, I like the JJ Abrams versions of ST better than some of the NG series.

I could name more of the movies than the ships but apart from "Wrath of Khan" the new ones should be higher as a lot of the Trek movies are very dated now.

ReplyDeleteIn that case, the best Star Trek movie ever was definitely Galaxy Quest. The Abrams ones are the only other ones that make the list after that.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen all the Star Trek movies (I watched the TV shows not so much the movies) but I think Wrath of Khan was far and away the best movie. I didn't care for TNG going to movie but I would say First Contact was probably the best of the lot but I don't know if I would place it 2nd. In fact the list is probably not in the order I would have chosen at all but I think Galaxy Quest being on there is cool. I would say that Trekkies are a pretty varied group and they kind of cluster together...likely the ones who responded to this poll were of a similar mind on what they liked. either that or one of the person who did the poll put out the call to his other trekkie buddies that all liked the same movies. It's easy to skew polls.
ReplyDeleteInto Darkness would have been my first choice! I loooove the new Star Trek movies and, ahem, have a bit of a thing for Chris Pine... The cast of Interstellar sounds, well, STELLAR! Sounds like a must-see.... and congrats to all the hardworking authors you mention here. Wow, everyone's so darned busy!
ReplyDeleteI think it's because they took the idea of Wrath of Khan and switched it... the idea that they are following the pattern of the original show and mixing it with the films is good and bad. Trek fans are still miffed that they re-wrote the history for future generations to see, so much that it could hurt the shows and films we know and love.
ReplyDeleteAlex-- I agree with you. 'First Contact' was and still is the best Star Trek film I've seen. Jonathan Frakes did one heck of a job. I do think 'The Wrath of Khan' is up there, but not number #1. I also liked 'Undiscovered Country.' But I'm surprised 'The Voyage Home' ranked so high. That one was not so good. IMO, Nemesis and Insurrection were the worst. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't seen 'Into the Darkness' yet. I had the baby in May, so I don't think I left the house that month or in June!

ReplyDeleteDespite competition from the newer movies, I still think The Wrath of Khan is the best. I agree with you, Into Darkness should be MUCH higher (at least higher than the dreadful Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek III, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek V). Although, while I like the actor playing Khan in Into Darkness, I am CONVINCED the producers didn't want to have anyone other than a WHITE guy play someone named 'Khan.' I think they were terrified of being accused of racism.

That chart is pretty accurate Alex, even if it does add a none Trek film. I wonder if they'll add Abramms Star Wars? I hadn't heard much about Interstellar, ut it sounds interesting. Finally, I wish I knew how to recover comments but that happened to use years ago and we had to just live with it.

ReplyDeleteThese fans can't have it both ways.
They get all superior about their knowledge of the Trek world and then think its funny to add Galaxy Quest into the mix. It is an awesome movie but either take your list seriously or don't. And you can't tell me that the whale movie was better than any of these! It's not possible.
I think the new movies are great. The way they solved the age issue was brilliant.
Okay, rant over.
My brain hurts from my rant but I know Nostromo (sp?) and Serenity are in the trivia answers for sure.

I propose a universal commenting procedure for all blogs to make it easier to comment everywhere. Also, why can't all printer cartridges be the same and compatible for all printers? What a racket these companies that make printers have going.

I gotta love a ninja who holds First Contact in such high esteem. The ranking to my mind gets it right in some places, but very wrong in others. I actually like Final Frontier, and so what you will about Into Darkness, but there's no way it's worse than Final Frontier. But then, the person who put it together is obviously a Wrath of Khan diehard, so it only figures.

I read the comments on this post (I don't usually) and found myself thinking, "Yeah, what he said," or "I think that, too." One of the most relevant ones was that rating the new Star Trek movie Into The Darkness at last place seems stupid (and just wrong) if you want the franchise to stay alive. I haven't seen the movie yet (I did see the first "new" movie) and it was great. I heard wonderful things about the second, so I don't understand the last place writing. Some of the original Star Trek movies were Awesome (I totally agree about The Wrath of Khan), but others were not. I don't even remember which one had the whales in it, but it was NOT good.

I've only seen a few Star Trek films, but I really enjoyed the most recent one. The ticket girl we had in Sarasota said she was a lifelong Trekkie and thought it was the absolute best ST film ever.

I'm really not that good in identifying them just by the image (which probably speaks of my level of knowledge). Except for the Wrath of Khan and the newest two, I don't remember the others.

I wasn't a huge Into Darkness fan. It was too predictable, although I did love Benedict Cumberbatch. A lot.

I have to agree with the Into Darkness ranking. I just wasnt as impressed with it as I hoped. And as Ilima says above me, it was far too predictable. I'd say the chart is pretty good on the whole, actually. I'm one of those rare peeps who loved the first one with V-Ger.

I used to love the Star Trek programmes years ago, saw a few of the movies, but Kirk and Bones started getting older and fatter and I didn't think it worked any more. Haven't seen any Patrick Stewart movies (I don't think) but I liked the TV series with him as captain.

ReplyDeleteI personally think the hate for Abrams era Trek is bizarre. I love the recent movies. First Contact might be my fav Trek film though - but probably because that was the most epic of the next gen flicks. The others were cheesier than I'd prefer.
ReplyDeleteStill I do love the first one, a lot, and 2 and 6. 3,4,7 & 9 are all about the same to me. With only 5 being a travesty. Oh, not sure how I feel about Nemisis. Can't remember a thing about it. I'll probably rewatch soon to see if that helps.
I'd make quite a few changes (First Contact would definitely be first). I'd put Nemesis waaaay lower on the list. Like I'd have to get several other sheets of paper to rank it low enough.

I loved Star Trek IV! It was the first one with a lot of humor, plus it had whales. Into Darkness certainly shouldn't be last though.

I don't know how I'd rate Star Trek, but I wouldn't do The Wrath of Khan first. And, like you, I think Into Darkness needs a higher rating.
I have issues with this Star Trek list as well, but mostly because my dad doesn't let me have an opinion about Star Trek, and I'm a grown woman. Whatever he likes is the best, but I can't blame him. I have my own fandom issues.

I'm not good at remembering the names of the films but my favorites were the one where the people don't age and time can be made to slow down. Data's boobs were firming up. LOL
Second favorite is the one with the whales. Who doesn't like whales and Spock got to be funny.

ReplyDeleteMy Ranking: Into Darkness, Journey Home, Star Trek (new), Nemesis, Galaxy Quest (lol), Generations, Contact. I've actually never watched all of Search For Spock (yikes!).
The Anti-Fest was fun! If the kids in my class could read, they'd have had a blast :)
Just the cast alone makes me want to see Interstellar.

I so remember Lost In Space.
Alex, maybe you're too young to remember. When Classic ST went off the air, it was before syndication. It was just gone. No videotapes. No DVDs. Just gone. It wasn't until I was in college that syndication brought it back. Two and a half seasons was it. We were starving for fresh material. I think that's what saved the franchise because that first movie was les bad cinema. But the Trekkers like me went to see it in droves. So they made another one. Wrath of Kahn was everything that had made the original series wonderful. It was like the old Star Trek was back. When they killed Spock off, I felt like a member of my family had died.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's one of those things you have to experience in its time to really understand the judging like that. It's my guess. For me, the next would be the 4th movie and then the new Star Trek movie.
Interstellar sounds great! I dunno about that Star Trek ranking. I love each and every one of those films and couldn't choose between them, but if someone held a gun to my head and forced me to rank them, my list would look nothing like that...

ReplyDeleteI've only seen the "new" Star Trek movies, and I enjoyed them. I suppose my opinion might be different had I seen the others, but either way, I thought they were decent. Really though, out of all of those, I think I'm most ashamed to say I haven't seen Galaxy Quest. Might have to remedy that...

well, i know that one of them is Serenity and the other is The Odyssey from Apollo 13(however you spell that). can *you* name a recent Tom Cruise movie that uses a spaceship called Odyssey? or maybe you have it listed up there and i didn't see it.

Kirk on the big screen. My heart was fluttering and my palms were sweaty. Ahh... the joy of it all. Hard to replicate that first time.

I've only seen 4 of the Star Treks, so I can't really say whether or not I agree with this list. I'd probably push Wrath of Khan behind First Contact, though. lol
The Voyage Home is my favorite Star Trek movie! I'm really enjoying the reboot, too. I haven't seen Into Darkness yet, but it's coming up in my Netflix queue soon. :)

ReplyDeleteI'd rank the J.J. Abrams Star Treks near the top, and Galaxy Quest was a hoot that got so much so right about the franchise I'll always love it.
ReplyDeleteBTW, there's a small profile of J.J. Abrams in a recent Vanity Fair. It seems a grade school teacher thought he was a weird kid who probably needed help. I wonder if she knows that he grew up to be normal and brilliant.

Within the Star Trek universe I have my favorite series. It was and it will ever be Deep Space Nine.
The graphic was too small for me to see the rankings, and wouldn't enlarge. Oh well, then you won't have to listen to me complain about how wrong they got it and why.

The blogfest was way fun. I was surprised by the Star Trek rankings as well. I would have ranked Into Darkness much higher, but the same is true of Insurrection, which was one of my faves. Nemesis would have been a bit below it, and I understand why it's not a fan fave, but behind Star Trek: The Motion Picture? Really. That was like the most boring ST movie ever! Nemesis wasn't THAT bad.

Um, trivia. You know I didn't sleep much last night due to the fact that I was kept up by C. Lee Mckenzie's excellent book, The Princess of Los Pulgas. (I thought I would only read a few chapters . . . and it grabbed me and I read until after midnight)

Really, Khan is first? The Star Trek film of my nightmares? (In the EARS!!!) Okay, I'm not actually a Trekkie, so couldn't tell you, but I'm married to one and my parents were fans, so I've absorbed them distantly. The one with the whales always struck me as weird and disjointed from the series, so I would rank it last, but maybe I'm way off base there.
