I’m going to give you both a scary movie and story!
At the time, Nightmare on Elm Street was a fresh idea and very effective. The idea that Freddy could kill you in your dreams was a scary concept and the film very creepy.
The scariest part was when we walked out of the theater. The streets were deserted and there was a layer of mist covering the ground. Let’s just say my friend and I walked very quickly back to campus!

The scariest thing I've ever watched is Silence of the Lambs, but that had much more to do with the jumpy blonde I was watching it with who kept grabbing my arm in the dark and making me jump! I have daft friends. I really don't like being scared, so I usually avoid the really scary stuff - I am a wimp. Your blogfest sounds intriguing - can't wait to hear more!

Oh my remember the Elm St movie, most of it spent with my eyes closed. Just the title of the blog hop sounds like a great one! The scariest movie for me was the original Dawn of the Dead. Nightmare on Elm Street was inspired (partially) by a film project done by college students in my home town, and the name was based on the actual Elm Street in our downtown. Yep, that's our claim to fame! Yet with all that, I've never seen it. I accidentally saw about five minutes of a horror film when I was a little kid, and it freaked me out so badly I had nightmares for years. I've steered clear of horror ever since. I even refused to watch The Birds with my sister when we were in college!
ReplyDeleteOh yes--the original Nightmare on Elm Street WAS terrifying! I think it got a little ruined for me with later iterations, but you've reminded me how much it freaked me out, too. Terrifying concept.

When I was a girl I would watch and rewatch Freddy- I own his movies and <3 them. My oldest daughter has begun watching the nightmare on elm streets. I could see how the idea is creepy- something out to get you through your dreams.

Hopefully there wasn't an alley way with a guy walking down it with really long arms. That movie was awesome. The remake, not so much.
ReplyDeleteThe original 'Nightmare on Elm Street' is also on my scariest list, but there were only so many I could fit. Johnny Depp being pulled into a bed of blood...scared the heck out of me. It truly was an original concept. It seems that so few modern movies have those.

Nightmare on Elm Street and Jaws both scared me badly when I was younger, and I saw both of them at home. I don't watch horror movies much anymore.

You can have all our hot tamales if we could send them to you - my hubby can't eat fake cinnamon, and my kids and I can't eat corn syrup . . .my kids actually dress up for trick or treating just to be out there with all the other kids - plus we have an exchange policy in our house - corn syrup candy for chocolate.

The Skeleton Key was one of the scariest movies I've ever not watched the ending to. I snuck a peek and changed the channel. I'd watch Silence of the Lambs, The Blob, or Halloween, anytime before I'd ever watch TSK again. Hmm, wonder if it's because there are worse things than dying?

ReplyDeleteI love the Nightmare movies because I'm a big dream fan. One of my scary movie experiences was when I went to see the original Night of the Living Dead at a drive-in in Tennessee. The drive home that night was spooky because it was through a rural area similar to the one depicted in the film. It's still one of my top horror film picks.

ReplyDeleteThe two books that scared me most were Dracula and Interview with the vampire. The first probably because I was only 14 and it was the first really scary book I ever read. I went to sleep with the light on and my cross clutched in my hands for weeks! I read the second book in my twenties and I think the reason it scared me more was because it made 'evil' so seductive.

I'm going to watch Sinister at the movie theater today. My friend Lisa wanted to go. As I've gotten older, I've liked scary movies less and less mostly because I don't like to be scared. Oooh...I don't know if this is a good idea but one almost feels obligated to go and see a scary movie on Halloween.

ReplyDeleteOne of my scariest movie scenes is in Cocoon, when the woman steps out of her skin and becomes an alien. I don't know why my parents thought that were a good movie to take a kid my age to. I've always preferred the less is more approach of the classic silent and early sound horror films, which also managed to be more scarier and suggestive of horror without CGI.

So funny cuz I was thinking of Freddy Krueger earlier today and how freaky he was and the whole concept. Of course, not it seems pretty dumb, but you're so right about the time when it came out. Totally fresh and horrifying. The 80s was definitely a horror film decade. So much fun!!

Nightmare on Elm Street freaked me out. I saw it when I was fourteen. Like you, I left the theater late at night. BUT, I had to walk two and a half miles home by myself down deserted streets. Scariest walk I ever took!!

When they re-released the exorcist my friends and I went to see it at one of the oldest cinemas in our area. Walking back to the train station, we were all creeped out enough to literally latch onto each others limbs, not wanting to let go. Despite that, I still managed to startle one of my male friends and make him jump sky high. It was hilarious and scary at the same time!

The scariest movie I went to see was the ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN ... It was terrifying because it dealt with real life... nothing paranormal in those days. Very Hitchcock's Psychoish.... freaked me out for weeks.

If I'd had any hot tamales, you'd be welcome to them. Though I must say that I lived on Snickers and Hot Tamales when I worked at a theater, because they were the two cheapest candy bars, and the only alternatives to popcorn, pretzels and nachos when I needed some food on a long shift. Snickers was the most satisfying, though, because that's just what it does. The commercials said so.

Forgot to say that I had a similar experience to your Nightmare on Elm Street one. For me, it was The Birds. We had just watched it in class (after having read the original short story by...Daphne DuMaurier or some such??). It was fall. My friend and I walked out of the building to go across the quad to a different set of classes and there were birds. Everywhere. There was this steady noise, just like in the movie, as they all talked to each other. They were on the ground, perched above us on the building and walkway coverings, on the benches, in the trees. Oh, it was spectacular! And incredibly creepy. We walked VERY quickly to the next building.
ReplyDeleteI remember going to see Nightmare on Elm street when it first came out as well, it frightened the bloody life out of me! I saw it again a couple of months ago and was very surprised at how tame it was compared to some of the stuff that's out nowadays! And you gotta love Rod Zombie!!
ReplyDeleteI agree, when it first released Nightmare on Elm Street had a unique and scary concept! Am really intrigued by this exciting new blogfest. Dare I venture to guess that it has something to do with giving rather than receiving, in the spirit of the coming holidays? Will have to keep an eye out for the sign-ups and more details!

ReplyDeleteWhen I saw Nightmare on Elm Street in the theater, the film broke halfway through. In the couple minutes it took to fix it, no one made a sound. Everyone was too scared to speak. It was so weird.
Sounds like the blogfest will be quite an event. Looking forward to the details!

ReplyDeleteThe first scary movie I remember seeing was The Incredible Shrinking Man. I was about 8. Gave me nightmares, particularly at the end when he's fighting off a tarantula with a straight pin, then *poof* winks out of existence. For years after I thought if I went through a fog I'd start to shrink. A most impressionable mind and probably one of the main reasons I don't do horror.

Ah, Nightmare... I watched this movie with my brother and from then on we went and saw all of them at the cimema together (the movies wasn't something we usually did together).
