The Depressed Writer

Elise Fallson had an interesting post on Tuesday – “Writing: A Vocation of Unhappiness.” She asked “Do you think it's possible to become a good writer without enduring the bouts of internal turmoil and depression?”

I supposed authors are always portrayed as tortured souls, but are they all miserable? I won’t ever claim to be a really good writer, but I’ve enjoyed a pretty good life. I’ve always been even-keeled and right now I’m at peace with every aspect of my world. I don’t have high highs or low lows, so I’ve never sunk to the depths of depression. I’ll grumble through a first draft (as that’s my least favorite aspect) but nothing about my writing makes me miserable.

Am I the only one? Does that make me really odd? Or just really blessed? (Or is it a sign I really should pursue music instead? Wait, those people are supposed to be tortured as well. Crap.)

Did I Notice Your Book Blogfest!

Post about a book you’ve noticed. You can choose a book that you’ve read, something you saw on a blog or social media site, Goodreads, or a sales website. Anything that caught your eye because of a great cover, blurb or reviews, but DON’T tell the author that their book has been noticed. Instead, shout out on social media sites, and encourage others to do the same, until the author finds his/her book.

Leave a blog comment at Ninja Captain Alex’s BLOG or Ciara Knight’s BLOG when the author finds their book.

Only two rules:
1) You can’t post about your own book.
2) The book shouldn’t be on the New York Times or USA Today bestseller list.
This is your chance to shout out about a book that might not have been noticed by others.

Since I’m always checking Amazon rankings (especially Amazon UK, as both of my books have been bouncing around the top one hundred of science fiction for six months now) I decided to check out the books my readers have also purchased. That’s when I found this book:

Ep.#1 - "Aurora: CV-01" (The Frontiers Saga) by Ryk Brown

Description:

Episode 1

A world recovering from a devastating plague…
A brutal enemy threatening invasion…
A young man seeking to escape the shadow of his father…
A ship manned by a crew of fresh academy graduates…
A top-secret experimental propulsion system…
A questionable alliance with a mysterious green-eyed woman…

What destiny has in store for the crew of the UES Aurora, is far greater than any of them could ever imagine. And this is only the beginning…

All of the episodes have a four star rating and sound like great reads. The book can also be found at Amazon and Goodreads.

I noticed your book, Ryk! Now, will you notice that I noticed…?

Don’t forget to visit others participating in the blogfest:

Some great new books, news, and contests – anything strike your fancy? Are you a depressed or happy writer? (And if I’m the only happy writer then we need to throw a party or something!) Have you discovered any great books lately? Don’t forget – if the author notices that you posted about his book, leave a comment and let us know!

And don’t forget to visit Rusty at the A to Z Blog!

And come back on Friday for a very special HUGE party and celebration!

  7. Looking forward to finding lots of new books in your bloghop today, even though I'm not taking part myself - I just couldn't face the time to visit the whole list :-(

  8. Another great BlogFest is underway!!

Thanks for the many great heads ups (as usual:) and I really enjoyed Elise's post.

To paraphrase what I said over there:

    Was depressed.

Became a Writer (among other things!)

    Happier now :)

  9. Lots going on today. Better get on my bike and start visiting people.

  10. Kyra, you're welcome!

Elise, thanks for starting the conversation.

Annalisa, the only ones who have to do that are Ciara and I.

    Mark, that's the spirit!

  11. Really great blogfest, Alex. Should be interesting to see how many notice a shift on their social nettworking sites and or sales. Very happy for Roland!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't think you're the only one. I'm pretty happy as well, even though I write.

Of course, there are times when the things I wrote affect my mood. I wouldn't call it depression, though.

  13. So much going on in the Ninja News! I'm so excited for all our blogging buddies.
Great DINYB choice! The cover and blurb intrigue me.
This is such an exciting blog fest. I'm getting to know about so many new books.

  14. Another great round of Ninja News to make me smile.

Congrats to Roland!! Woot! Good things to happen to a great guy with a ghostly wit about him.

Yay for Kyra's not cover and Three Cheers for Lynn's new release. Need to go check that out.

Although I can't claim depression, I can claim a past of ups and downs that I can draw upon. Plus, taking my writing seriously has been one of the happier things to happen to me, well, not happier than having a center in my life and having my Chipmunk :-)

  15. I read Elise's post yesterday. I thought it was terrific.

Sounds like quite the blogfest you've got going on today. I'm not participating but I'll enjoy seeing what everyone else is posting.

  17. Sounds like a great bloghop hoping to get some free time in a little bit to stop by the linky list.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This blog hop if fun already. I'm a happy writer.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Awesome learning about more books I haven't heard of. Not that I need more to add to the list. Sorry I couldn't participate but this is a really busy month.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So much happening! Rusty is a wonderful artist.
Depression - I think having that type of personality draws people to creative outlets, so you'd find more tortured souls in the arts, not that the arts created that mindset. I was bipolar before I ever started writing.
The book you chose sounds great!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have some real lows, but writing doesn't make it worse.

    Thanks for hosting the blogfest.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Congrats to Roland. Nice cover on Violent Midnight. I caught Elise's post. Goods stuff and yes, you're blessed. Looking at the cover of Aurora says space and SF to me. Guess that makes it a good fit for the book.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Misha, good for you!

Ciara, it was a great idea!

Angela, glad you found your book.

    Susan, glad you are happy!

    JL, good fit for me!

  24. Yep, I'm a wanna-be writer who is always down in the dumps! I make it plain as day in my blog posts and it's also reflected in my fictional writing.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Great blog hop, especially as I'm finding so many good reads!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm most definitely a happy writer - and happy person. Life is far too short to spend much time being miserable. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm a volatile writer with flashes of ennui! LOL!!

Yay for the amazingly spelled Ryk!! Take care

  28. Congratulations to everyone and I'm so happy for Roland! He deserves some great news!

Can't wait to see all the great books people find!

  29. *waves* to the happy writers. Me too! And writing makes me even happier. It's fabulous.

  30. Hi, Alex! Great blog hop. I've already learned about several new books and there are still a lot more stops to make.

I like to think of myself as a happy writer, a little moody at times, but never depressed. As Jemi said, "Life is far too short to spend much time being miserable."

    ReplyDelete
  31. Good looking book there that you chose. I hope the author finds you.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for the shout out to Violet Midnight. We had a blast celebrating the release yesterday. I'm still tired. LOL. have a super day!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Alex--thanks to you and Ciara for hosting the blog hop--So much fun and I love seeing all the books people choose.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lots of fun in the coming weeks and, yes, I think you can become a good writer without the depression. However, I don't know anyone who has. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Alex, I knew I could count on you for a good Sci Fi recommendation. I will check it out.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am in love with this blogfest! And I almost chose Lynn!!! She's awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love seeing so many great Ninja news!
Congrats to Lynn on her new release!
I don't think I'm a depressed writer, but I do have my ups and downs and sometimes I just want to throw the laptop on the wall! lol But it goes away and then all is well again ;)
    Awesome blogfest! Super fun!

    ReplyDelete
  38. That does sound like a great book! So many exciting things going on.
I'm only stopping in and then I have to get back to work.
I wasn't able to write up anything for today's fest and I apologize. If you want to take my name off the list that is completely fair.
My excuse is that I made it to the second round of the contest, thanks to you guys, and I'm working on my synopsis before my deadline!
Have fun. I'll be back on Friday for the party!

    ReplyDelete
  39. My moods, especially more melancholy ones, have always affected my poetry. But not so much my prose. That's more about storytelling than self expression, though there are elements of that in the prose too.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jemi, that's great!

    Deborah, excellent!

    Susanne, life IS too short.

    Lynn, you're welcome.

Katie, thanks for the vote of confidence...

Heather, sorry! I'll fix the list when I get a chance.

Glad everyone is enjoying the blogfest!

    ReplyDelete
  41. What a fun blogfest! I feel the good karma flowing.

    Great to see Kyra's cover.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Nah, I'm not really the "tortured artist" type. Perhaps it's the too much "self confidence."

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm the non-tortured and even-keeled type, too. I always enjoy writing. I grumble for a few moments before starting draft 20, but that's about it...

    Let's all sing Kumbaya now.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It's a good day to browse the blogosphere for new books to read!

And, yes, I go through my bouts of depression and tortured soul moments over my writing. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Interesting thoughts on depressed writers. I think it depends on content, to be honest. I think there are things you can't tap if you haven't been through some hard stuff, but I don't think you have to be perpetually depressed. I am an upbeat happy person but write some very dark stuff. But I HAVE BEEN THERE--not depression, at least not first hand--but I've had depressed loved ones and I have had some very hard experiences.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Happy writer here. (And a tortured soul, uh-huh) When's the party, Alex? Will there be wine?? I love a glass of wine.

I've noticed Justine Dell's Recaptured Dreams. What a great story! What awesome writing! Have you read it yet?

Aurora sounds awesome. I think I will check it out. And four episodes promise to keep us in Ryk's world for some time. Love it!

    *waves peace sign*

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lots going on to be sure. I'm going to be hopping around all day LOL.

Yeah, I'm a depressed writer. Sometimes it's so bad I can't write for days or weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm a happy soul, I think.

I like the goodreads link. I didn't think of that I'll have to go add one to my post.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That sounds like a good book, Alex. I'm excited about this blogfest!

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is so much fun! Thanks for hosting :-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. THANK YOU BOSSMAN NINJA.... you are the king of the blogs! I am in a writer's funk... I am in a designer's funk... you can say I am in a funk'd up place. I have been doing some free projects for some of my great friends.. so anyone need anything let me know... so far two special made art pieces and one book cover.

I totally botched the last blog-fest I was in... and I am in shame...

I want this month to be over...

on a happier note: Alex thank you again for the shout out.

    Jeremy [Retro]

  52. Yippee, the author just found my post and was quite surprised! Fun, fun blogfest. Am heading over to tell Ciara!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Its a busy time of the year and lots of new releases and other events going on. And I will definitely check out Aurora CV-01. Sounds like my kind of read.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Great bloghop! I think you can be genuinely happy in your life and still write great books. I don't think writers need to be angst-ridden and depressed all the time to be creative. I think having those experiences sometimes helps give a writer's work depth that may not have been there before but I think happy people can write well too.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Melissa, Hemingway wrote: “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”

We as writers must work alone. That, as Elise wrote, has its consequences. We toil long hours on our dreams and hold them out to the public to be accepted or denied. When your dream of prose is rejected, your very self is rejected. How can that not be painful?

So we must as Hemingway suggested find fulfilment and joy in the process and realize the very act of creating something out of nothing is healing if we but look at it that way.

Alex, the two authors I noticed more than likely will not notice I noticed them, for the very reason Elise wrote about. A boost in their book sales could well be the thing that boosts their day. How cool would that be?

Alex, thanks for being happy for my two stories sales. This was a great idea for a blogfest. You and Ciara are to be applauded. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. The cover of Lynn Rush's book is awesome.

Like you, I love writing. The only think that makes me a little crazy is all the fine editing near the end for word choice, overused words, and things like that. I always feel as if I'll never finish that part.

All in all, I love my life!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks for hosting the blog fest. I really like Lyn's cover and I hope Ryk finds his here today :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I did the, Did I Notice Your Book.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Andrew, me neither.

Bryan, can we just pretend we sang it?

Hart, that's probably why I write the lighter, funnier science fiction.

Robyn, I have it just haven't read it.

Jeremy, you're welcome. And it can only get better!

    Lynn, that's great.

    Roland, you're welcome.

Carol, that's why the Tiki Hut is all about fun!

Glad everyone is enjoying the blogfest!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Aurora sounds like a great book, and Laura Josephson noticed already that I noticed her book! Hooray!
As for being a tortured soul and a writer, or musician, I don't think being a tortured soul is necessary. I think it helps to have some life experience that takes us through some highs and lows, but that's about it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Depression and writing do not go hand in hand as a matter of course. I'm more like you, Alex. Except once a month, I have a slightly more pronounced squiggle. :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks for co-hosting this blog hop. It's a great idea!

Lots of good stuff going on with the ninjas, too!

    ReplyDelete
  63. The book you noticed sounds good! Was that the blurb from it? That is a cool idea if so. I think I like them like that, short and to the point with hints of mystery.

I'm a happy writer. I get discouraged sometimes, but I love what I do even if I whine when I have to edit.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm on the west coast so it feels as if I'm always late for the party. Course, I suppose all those in California feel the same. Anyhoo, Yay, for thinking this up, Ciara! And Alex, Captain-Sir, I'm thrilled to be here. Your noticed books looks awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Technically I'm still on that vacation I promised myself, but I'm jumping in to mention a book on the Did I Noitice Your Book Blogfest while my vacationing mind can still function!

Thanks for adding another book to my TBR list, Alex!

  67. Ah, I've seen that book on my "also bought" lists on Amazon. I think we are in good company. :)

Writing makes me happy. I can tell when I'm not writing enough because I lean toward depression during those times.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Looks like a great hop! You've always got so much going on over here, Alex. Rock on, dude.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I've done that too, noticed books that my readers have also purchased. It's amazing the gems you can find!

On the depressed writer issue, my brother emailed me a BBC article about that yesterday and I laughed at the thought that I must be depressed since I'm a writer. I think we're likely to be sensitive and notice things others don't but I don't think it means we're all on the verge of suicide. So you're not alone, Alex.

  70. My author, Emily Schaffer found my post and reblogged it on her blog. So cool. Thanks again Alex for a great blogfest.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Thanks for hosting this cool blogfest - so many great books that people are shouting about! When I saw Lynn's cover I thought for a minute we'd chosen the same book, but she was in your news section, lol. She hasn't *found* my post yet, but I think she's still recovering from last night's blowout party on FB ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Alex, my blog is up, late due to a family emergency last night.

I don't necessarily think internal turmoil or depression make a good writer--maybe great fodder for your journal. I don't even think you have to suffer the depths of those two things to write it. I believe any good storyteller can put a character into such a situation by drawing on moments of depression or when they've been conflicted about something. You know the feelings to draw on without having been lost in the black hole of those feelings.

  73. So many good things happening! Ah depression, I know thee well. I actually went off my thyroid med once so I could go to that dark place. I needed it to write. Pretty stupid, I know, and I'll never do it again. Too scary. But I did get some good writing out of it. Great blogfest, you guys. I can't wait to start reading all the posts. I couldn't stick to just one. I picked a book from the past, present, and future. And a huge party on Friday, huh? Wahoo! I LOVE a good party!! Heh heh. See you then :-)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hmmm, artistic types do seem to have that angsty reputation. But for the most part, I'm like you. I'm not banging my head against the wall or drinking too much because I can't tweak my writing the way I want it.

Many congrats to Roland! And Kyra, and Lynn...hope I didn't miss anybody. Heck, congratulations to everybody!

    ReplyDelete
  75. imo, I don't think we are required to experience things in order to write about them but the more experiences we have - god and bad - the richer our writing.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thanks to a heads up from C. Lee McKenzie, my link for the blogfest isn't working. I tried to sign up again, but it said I'm already signed up. Not sure how to fix the link. I notice it has 'bloghop' at the end of the URL, so maybe that's messing it up? Not sure. Darn!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yea! Yea! Yea! Author, Liz Fichera just retweeted my tweet for the DINY your book contest and her AWESOME novel, CAPTIVE SPIRIT!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yeah i'm not a depressed writer either. I mean, sure, i may have moments of frustration and doubt, but they don't last long, and then i'm back at it

    ReplyDelete
  79. One of the awesome side benefits of this fest is the large TBR list I'm creating! Thanks for hosting Alex and Ciara!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I've been depressed (clinically, with meds) since I broke my wrist and the chronic pain started. Not sure that counts as a depressed writer though, because writing isn't what depresses me (or frustrates, or whatever) in fact, it encourages me and keeps me moving forward one step at a time.
He hasn't noticed yet...but I'll let you know if I do.
    I'm ready for a party!

  84. Ha! Yes, those musicians are tortured too... ;)

Maybe doing both balances you out???

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'm not a depressed/tortured writer, either. I've had moments of "man, this book sucks/my writing sucks" but those are the moments when I've stared at the book for weeks on end and I'm tired. ;) Generally, I'm a very happy writer.

Connie noticed that I noticed her book on my blog! :D

  86. Tears actually streamed down my face when I found the kind words about my book over at EJ Wesley's blog, the Open Vein. This is why we're in the game, folks.

  87. I'm excited to learn about tons of new books thanks to this blogfest!

I've had problems with depression before but writing is one of the main things that helped me deal with it. To me it is definitely a soothing activity.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I mentioned 3 books in my blogfest post!

    I'm a happy writer :)
Anxious? Yes. Insecure? Yes. Depressed? No!

    ReplyDelete
  89. I've been seeing your blogfest all over, Alex, and what a listing of books. This awesome.

Your selection sounds great. Just got my copy.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I think Amazon might have recommended that one to me before - but I trust your recs more. Adding to my To Read list now. Great blogfest!

  92. If the depressed writer thing were true it would be found evenly across the board in all artistic pursuits.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I think writers are tortured. It's a hard life, and you are blessed :)

The unnoticed book I feel is THE CASUAL VACANCY by JK Rowling, not because of low sales (definitely not) but because of the bad reviews which make people not like it. I loved the book because I gave the characters a chance and didn't expect Harrry Potter. I hope people will notice the non-Harry Potter magic of JK Rowling's writing.

  94. Hey guys! Stupid work meetings. I'm back. And whoa...

    Tyrean, glad she found it!

    Suze, that made me laugh!

    Jack, that was the blurb.

    Lee, glad you joined us.

    Cherie, that's good to know.

    Milo, I'm rocking!

    Jai, good!!

    Sydney, that's cool.

Katie, I'm sure she'll find it.

    Sia, well put.

    Nancy, stay on those meds.

    Gwen, glad I'm not alone.

    Lynn, I'll fix it.

    That's great, Amy!

Tina, good! And that was an awesome thing you did.

    Morgan, I'll buy that.

    Laura, that's great!

    Jeffrey, glad you found it.

    Michelle, good!

Thanks again everyone for having fun with this blogfest. Now to catch up...

  95. Hahahaha, love that musicians are tortured too. Now if I could just find peace like the Ninja.

  96. Made it through the entire list ... *wipes sweat* Found my book twice! More importantly, I've added about 15 books to my TBR list.

Thanks again for doing this Alex (and Ciara!), made my week. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Great idea for a blog hop, Alex. My TBR list has grown today! Looking forward to seeing some of the authors reactions when they 'find' their book.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I think people just like there are all kinds of writers, depressed, balanced, eccentric, ...

    ReplyDelete
  99. This is a great blogfest. Thank you for hosting! And a good pick. Nothing about my writing makes me miserable either. It makes me happy!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  101. Alex, another successful blogfest. I'm looking forward to your next one! I also enjoyed your post about the depressed writer. We're not all tortured souls!

    ReplyDelete

  106. You are such a tease leaving that note at my place! I'm sorry, sorry, sorry I didn't join this blogfest - I just knew I'd have a hard time vising many blogs & didn't want to be one sided, you know? And then you go and hint that I'd better make time...challenge accepted. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  107. Reporting in, Captain Ninja Alex. LK Rigel found her book on my site. :)

    ReplyDelete
  108. OK. Technically I didn't participate today but I bought Nancy's book a few minutes ago and tweeted it and she saw it so I guess that counts!

Now I just need time to read all my friend's books! Like yours!

    Heather

  109. I don't think all writers are depressed. We have the same worries and unhappiness as anyone else - we're just better at describing it.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Now, I can't wait until Friday. I can't wait until the celebration! It better not be another blogfest...

The DINYB Blogfest has been so much fun! I'm still getting around to visiting the other blogs and it's so interesting.

AND, I almost forgot, Connie found her book! Woohoo!

I read Elise's post too and that was very eye-opening.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Nicki, you at least need to go looking...

    Laura, excellent!

Heather, you'll really enjoy her book! And thanks.

Patsy, that's a perfect way to describe it!

Livia, no that's on Monday! And glad Connie found her book.

  112. Trust me I've had true depression and writer's angst. For you to have neither is a blessing. If you need a reminder of the negative results of too much writing/music depression, you only need to remember Kurt Kobain. Thank you for this blogfest and great pick. Best of luck in having the author find you.

    ReplyDelete
  113. So many great books. I need twelve more of me to read them all.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Writing doesn't tend to make me feel depressed. Muttering horrible character fates and feeling like throwing the computer at the wall is as far as I go, and that's only when things are REALLY not going well.

Aurora sounds like a really good book!

    ReplyDelete
  115. I'm not a depressed writer, I'm usually happiest when creating. It's the waiting and frustration that bothers us.

    Good luck with the blogfest!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I've discovered a fascinating read over atTomorrow News Network called 'A Stranger Comes To Town.' Its funny how a 'point of view' or voice pops into your head once you get into a good read.

Am I a depressed or happy writer? Well, I was happy to learn something new about my craft today. Characters in stories can't read each others minds! LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Sheena-kay - he was a depressed artist!

Mary, want some of my clones?

Spacerguy, watch out if they start doing that!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I am a depressed writer with spurts of happiness. You are a happy writer with chronic talent and blessings.

    Cheers, Alex.

  119. This has been so much fun. Sharing my favorite and seeing what other great stories are out there. My TBR list grew so much today! Great blogfest. :)

    ReplyDelete
  120. I don't often get depressed, but when I do, I don't write at all! I'm at my best as a writer when I'm feeling good. So I'm joining your happy writer club, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  121. You can tell I'm a romantic because my favorite line in that blurb is "A questionable alliance with a mysterious green-eyed woman…".

    ReplyDelete
  122. I tend to be even when it comes to mood swings- though sometimes I get mad or a little sad (happy, too- of course). I haven't read the book or author that you wrote up for your hop post- but the book does sound like one you would love! I think this hop is amazing and fun!

Congrats to all of those with good news!
    ~Jess

  123. I was having writer depression and angst like crazy until I wrote my most recent novella. It kind of cured me of it.

Nice book for your DINYB feature! :D

    ReplyDelete
  124. Just opened up and Tribute Books, who deal with my author's media, has just noticed my post and and sent there thanks. Not the author but, I suppose that counts??

    ReplyDelete
  125. I am just now starting the blogfest visits since I was away from the computer ALL DAY :-(
I like how you discovered your noticed book.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I guess I'm a pretty happy writer too, Alex. I'm enjoying experimenting in different genres and doing my own thing, so I have very little to complain about.

Nice choice for DINYB -- I'm interested in reading more sci fi so will add this author to my TBR list.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Yhoo. Lynn Rush found her book on my blog. Thanks for hosting the fest. Lots of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Wow. TONS of great covers out there. Got a late start to the party today but I found Violet Midnight and Prelude to Darkness on a couple blogs! Off to visit some more. My author hasn't found her book on my blog yet.... :)

    ReplyDelete
  129. I am frequently amazed at the number of blogsfests you host or participate in. I'm not joining in on this one but I am hopping around to find interesting new reads. Aurora definitely makes the list.

If we have to be miserable to be successful, I guess I'll remain a happy failure.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Thanks, Robyn! Sorry, I'm just that way.

    Raquel, glad you've enjoyed it.

    Bella, join the happy club!!

Jess, I'll let you know about the book soon.

    Cm, good enough!

Susan, all the links should go to the posts now.

Patricia, let's hear it for being happy!

    Susan, that's great!

Lynn, but I hope you've found YOUR book...

  131. Hi Alex,

Yep, I'm finally here. I have 'thrilled' a number of those participating in the blogfest with my 'eagerly anticipated comments. Or something like that.

Depression, happiness and all points in between, allow me to write for the real reason I do. To get it out and use writing as a cathartic, therapeutic resource.

    Take care and be well.

    Gary

    ReplyDelete
  132. Sounds like an amazing read!! Definitely adding it to the never-ending TBR :)

    ReplyDelete
  133. I love my writing, but I torture myself a bit by wondering if I'll ever be great, and wanting to get published. Maybe it's just that driving force that keeps us pushing to make better art.

    ReplyDelete
  134. EJ found his book on my blog around 11:42 a.m. He was a very happy camper. :)

    ReplyDelete
  135. Thanks for hosting, Alex! Your pick is intriguing. I need to check out the Halloween blogfest.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I feel so guilty -- if I hadn't been so overwhelmed this last week, I would've participated in this blogfest. It's such a generous thing to promote other writers' works, and it's good karma to boot. The Aurora book sounds like a real find.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I actually got unexpectedly called out of town on a family emergency, so I was barely online today-- but I did notice that the author who's book I noticed--Krystal Wade, author of Wilde's Fire-- saw it on my blog and commented--which was very cool!!

Due to my unforeseen circumstances, I haven't been able to participate in the blog hop at all, but I hope to be able to visit some of the other participants later on this week.

This was a great idea and I'm sure it will make a lot of lesser known writers feel good, so nice job!

    ReplyDelete
  138. LD, the next two weeks will scare you then...

Gary, and that is an excellent reason for writing.

    Carrie, that's great!

Michael, there are three Halloween blogfests that week...

    Helena, that's all right.

Tamara, that's great she found it. All links go straight to the blogfest post, so that will help you out later.

    ReplyDelete
  139. If writing made me miserable, I wouldn't do it. When I'm NOT writing is when I feel down. I'm feeling down today.

    ReplyDelete
  140. So much going on - doesn't your head spin while composing these posts?

I think artists in general (whether they're writers, musicians, or traditional artists) tend towards depression because it is their ability to see the world in a different way that makes their work so unique. That said, I'm with you - I don't have big highs or lows and am content with life overall.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Nice blogfest!

If I *were* depressed, it sure wouldn't aid my writing, since I write humorous mysteries. I think a lot of writers do struggle with depression, though--I come across them quite a bit while going through my blog reader.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Hop Blogfest promises fun Halloween.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Fun Blogfest! Will have to try and get to the blogs and check it out. As always, thanks for all the news and notes!

    ReplyDelete
  144. Alex--my author found her book. Yay!! Rachel Van Dyken posted on my blog last night.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I'm bummed it didn't work out for me to participate, but I'm enjoying seeing which books people chose. Great idea for a blogfest, Alex. :)

    ReplyDelete
  146. Tonja, I'm sorry!

Vicki, we need to make a happy club.

Elizabeth, I guess it fuels those IWSG posts.

    Lindi, that's great!

Melissa, it was all Ciara's idea. I was just along for the ride. And Hot Tamales.

    ReplyDelete
  147. So much good stuff in this post. Congrats to Roland!

I know there's a stereotype about writers being miserable, but I think writing can be very therapeutic. I get giddy when I think of something funny or exciting to insert in my next chapter, or when I work out a tricky part of the plot.

Aurora looks interesting. I read about the Black Plague in Ken Follett's World Without End and it freaked me out!

    ReplyDelete
  148. The illustrator for the book I noticed found my blog post this morning. He was most grateful for the shout-out. This was an awesome idea for a blog fest!

    ReplyDelete
  149. Yay. My author found me on TWITTER!!!! :) Woot

    ReplyDelete
  150. I love that Blindsided cover! Simple without being *too* simple. I love the 'notice a book' deal, too. Great way to drum up an audience for those who might not otherwise have one!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Your book choice appears very fitting
    Congrats to Roland!
As for writers being depressed, I think they feel more deeply whether depression, compassion, or whatever the emotion.

    ReplyDelete
  152. You are blessed! Creativity does tend to toss most people around, like being on a coaster. I am not a fan of coasters~

WOW, so many great things going on!
Writing is good, but when it isn't..time to go dabble in another creativity nook n' cranky~

Fun fest...I love the idea! :D

    ReplyDelete
  153. Jennifer, glad you are a happy writer!

    Steven, that's great!

    Lynn, cool!

Ella, I don't like coasters either...

    ReplyDelete
  154. Oh, yes, I know about the ups and downs. You're lucky to be on an even keel, Alex. My mood swings depending on whether or not my books are selling, and whether or not I'm stuck while writing.

  155. Depressed writer extraordinaire, here in the back row. Many creative types are also depressives, and I'd say that's just how our brains are wired, but... there are also a lot out there who aren't.

My family, for instance, is composed of singer/songwriters, writers, and artists. Though all the girls suffer from sleep disorders, I'm the only one who's been diagnosed with depression. So I'm the moody black sheep of the flock.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I love the good news. Also, I've seen so many fantastic books during this blogfest.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Morgan, I'm sorry!

    Rachel, no you're not!'

Medeia, hope you found yours, as it was featured!

    ReplyDelete
  158. MISSION accomplished. My author found her book. :)

    ReplyDelete
  159. Amy Lignor the author of the book I posted for the blog hop just gave me a shout out on twitter!

    ReplyDelete
  160. Love coming to you blog and seeing where to go to next....

    ReplyDelete
  161. Ack, me and the other blogger must think very alike cos that is exactly what I posted on yesterday on my blog!

    ReplyDelete
  162. I still wait for the repair of my private notebook. In the meantime I use an real old one. That means I can't visit many sites and/or blogs in the evening because it takes so long.

    ReplyDelete
  163. I didn't participate in the Did I Notice Blogfest but read many posts of bloggers that did. The idea for that blogfest was wonderful. Loved it.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Brinda and CM, awesome!

    Damy, I saw that.

    Edi, that is a bummer.

    Glad you enjoyed it, Liz.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Yes, I found mine, but I'm still waiting for my author. I'm sure she'll come.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I'm with you - I don't think writing is a depressing pursuit at all. Occasionally frustrating...but even on bad days, it's still my favorite thing. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  167. Aurora, not heard of that before.

Hmmm dcepressed writer. Must look into that...

Oh and Milo and Rachel noticed that I noticed their books!
    Hoorah!
