The Depressed Writer
Elise Fallson had an interesting post on Tuesday – “Writing: A Vocation of Unhappiness.” She asked “Do you think it's possible to become a good writer without enduring the bouts of internal turmoil and depression?”
I supposed authors are always portrayed as tortured souls, but are they all miserable? I won’t ever claim to be a really good writer, but I’ve enjoyed a pretty good life. I’ve always been even-keeled and right now I’m at peace with every aspect of my world. I don’t have high highs or low lows, so I’ve never sunk to the depths of depression. I’ll grumble through a first draft (as that’s my least favorite aspect) but nothing about my writing makes me miserable.
Am I the only one? Does that make me really odd? Or just really blessed? (Or is it a sign I really should pursue music instead? Wait, those people are supposed to be tortured as well. Crap.)
Did I Notice Your Book Blogfest!
Post about a book you’ve noticed. You can choose a book that you’ve read, something you saw on a blog or social media site, Goodreads, or a sales website. Anything that caught your eye because of a great cover, blurb or reviews, but DON’T tell the author that their book has been noticed. Instead, shout out on social media sites, and encourage others to do the same, until the author finds his/her book.
Leave a blog comment at Ninja Captain Alex’s BLOG or Ciara Knight’s BLOG when the author finds their book.
Only two rules:
1) You can’t post about your own book.

Since I’m always checking Amazon rankings (especially Amazon UK, as both of my books have been bouncing around the top one hundred of science fiction for six months now) I decided to check out the books my readers have also purchased. That’s when I found this book:

Although I can't claim depression, I can claim a past of ups and downs that I can draw upon. Plus, taking my writing seriously has been one of the happier things to happen to me, well, not happier than having a center in my life and having my Chipmunk :-)

Depression - I think having that type of personality draws people to creative outlets, so you'd find more tortured souls in the arts, not that the arts created that mindset. I was bipolar before I ever started writing.

Interesting thoughts on depressed writers. I think it depends on content, to be honest. I think there are things you can't tap if you haven't been through some hard stuff, but I don't think you have to be perpetually depressed. I am an upbeat happy person but write some very dark stuff. But I HAVE BEEN THERE--not depression, at least not first hand--but I've had depressed loved ones and I have had some very hard experiences.
Happy writer here. (And a tortured soul, uh-huh) When's the party, Alex? Will there be wine?? I love a glass of wine.

Its a busy time of the year and lots of new releases and other events going on. And I will definitely check out Aurora CV-01. Sounds like my kind of read.
Great bloghop! I think you can be genuinely happy in your life and still write great books. I don't think writers need to be angst-ridden and depressed all the time to be creative. I think having those experiences sometimes helps give a writer's work depth that may not have been there before but I think happy people can write well too.

We as writers must work alone. That, as Elise wrote, has its consequences. We toil long hours on our dreams and hold them out to the public to be accepted or denied. When your dream of prose is rejected, your very self is rejected. How can that not be painful?
So we must as Hemingway suggested find fulfilment and joy in the process and realize the very act of creating something out of nothing is healing if we but look at it that way.
Alex, the two authors I noticed more than likely will not notice I noticed them, for the very reason Elise wrote about. A boost in their book sales could well be the thing that boosts their day. How cool would that be?

Like you, I love writing. The only think that makes me a little crazy is all the fine editing near the end for word choice, overused words, and things like that. I always feel as if I'll never finish that part.

As for being a tortured soul and a writer, or musician, I don't think being a tortured soul is necessary. I think it helps to have some life experience that takes us through some highs and lows, but that's about it.
Depression and writing do not go hand in hand as a matter of course. I'm more like you, Alex. Except once a month, I have a slightly more pronounced squiggle. :)

On the depressed writer issue, my brother emailed me a BBC article about that yesterday and I laughed at the thought that I must be depressed since I'm a writer. I think we're likely to be sensitive and notice things others don't but I don't think it means we're all on the verge of suicide. So you're not alone, Alex.

Alex, my blog is up, late due to a family emergency last night.
I don't necessarily think internal turmoil or depression make a good writer--maybe great fodder for your journal. I don't even think you have to suffer the depths of those two things to write it. I believe any good storyteller can put a character into such a situation by drawing on moments of depression or when they've been conflicted about something. You know the feelings to draw on without having been lost in the black hole of those feelings.

I've been depressed (clinically, with meds) since I broke my wrist and the chronic pain started. Not sure that counts as a depressed writer though, because writing isn't what depresses me (or frustrates, or whatever) in fact, it encourages me and keeps me moving forward one step at a time.
He hasn't noticed yet...but I'll let you know if I do.

I'm not a depressed/tortured writer, either. I've had moments of "man, this book sucks/my writing sucks" but those are the moments when I've stared at the book for weeks on end and I'm tired. ;) Generally, I'm a very happy writer.

The unnoticed book I feel is THE CASUAL VACANCY by JK Rowling, not because of low sales (definitely not) but because of the bad reviews which make people not like it. I loved the book because I gave the characters a chance and didn't expect Harrry Potter. I hope people will notice the non-Harry Potter magic of JK Rowling's writing.

Trust me I've had true depression and writer's angst. For you to have neither is a blessing. Writing doesn't tend to make me feel depressed. Muttering horrible character fates and feeling like throwing the computer at the wall is as far as I go, and that's only when things are REALLY not going well.

I tend to be even when it comes to mood swings- though sometimes I get mad or a little sad (happy, too- of course). I haven't read the book or author that you wrote up for your hop post- but the book does sound like one you would love! I think this hop is amazing and fun!

I am frequently amazed at the number of blogsfests you host or participate in. I'm not joining in on this one but I am hopping around to find interesting new reads. Aurora definitely makes the list.
If we have to be miserable to be successful, I guess I'll remain a happy failure.

Yep, I'm finally here. I have 'thrilled' a number of those participating in the blogfest with my 'eagerly anticipated comments. Or something like that.
Depression, happiness and all points in between, allow me to write for the real reason I do. To get it out and use writing as a cathartic, therapeutic resource.

I love my writing, but I torture myself a bit by wondering if I'll ever be great, and wanting to get published. Maybe it's just that driving force that keeps us pushing to make better art.

I feel so guilty -- if I hadn't been so overwhelmed this last week, I would've participated in this blogfest. It's such a generous thing to promote other writers' works, and it's good karma to boot. The Aurora book sounds like a real find.
I actually got unexpectedly called out of town on a family emergency, so I was barely online today-- but I did notice that the author who's book I noticed--Krystal Wade, author of Wilde's Fire-- saw it on my blog and commented--which was very cool!!
Due to my unforeseen circumstances, I haven't been able to participate in the blog hop at all, but I hope to be able to visit some of the other participants later on this week.
This was a great idea and I'm sure it will make a lot of lesser known writers feel good, so nice job!

So much going on - doesn't your head spin while composing these posts?
I think artists in general (whether they're writers, musicians, or traditional artists) tend towards depression because it is their ability to see the world in a different way that makes their work so unique. That said, I'm with you - I don't have big highs or lows and am content with life overall.

If I *were* depressed, it sure wouldn't aid my writing, since I write humorous mysteries. I think a lot of writers do struggle with depression, though--I come across them quite a bit while going through my blog reader.

I know there's a stereotype about writers being miserable, but I think writing can be very therapeutic. I get giddy when I think of something funny or exciting to insert in my next chapter, or when I work out a tricky part of the plot.
Aurora looks interesting. I read about the Black Plague in Ken Follett's World Without End and it freaked me out!
The illustrator for the book I noticed found my blog post this morning. He was most grateful for the shout-out. This was an awesome idea for a blog fest!

As for writers being depressed, I think they feel more deeply whether depression, compassion, or whatever the emotion.
You are blessed! Creativity does tend to toss most people around, like being on a coaster. I am not a fan of coasters~

Depressed writer extraordinaire, here in the back row. Many creative types are also depressives, and I'd say that's just how our brains are wired, but... there are also a lot out there who aren't.
My family, for instance, is composed of singer/songwriters, writers, and artists. Though all the girls suffer from sleep disorders, I'm the only one who's been diagnosed with depression. So I'm the moody black sheep of the flock.
I love the good news. Also, I've seen so many fantastic books during this blogfest.

I still wait for the repair of my private notebook. In the meantime I use an real old one. That means I can't visit many sites and/or blogs in the evening because it takes so long.
