Kicking Off the New Year and January Movies!

Time to ring in the New Year with some movies!

Don’t forget next Wednesday is the next posting for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group!

And Saturday is your last chance to enter my giveaway HERE – win a copy of CassaStar and review copy of CassaFire!

Monday is a really special feature, so don't miss it. Wednesday is the ISWG of course, Friday I have BIG announcement and guest post at Laura's site, then Monday I’ll highlight the best and worst of 2011 with a look ahead at 2012. (Yes, I am a busy and scheduled dude!)

Today, it’s all about the dumping ground that is January. As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

3 –

DVD – Contagion I’m feeling sick already

10 –

DVD – MoneyballCould be interesting
DVD – DriveExcellent art-house meets action film!

13 -

Contraband
ActionThriller
The cutthroat underground world of international smuggling - full of desperate criminals and corrupt officials, high-stakes and big payoffs - where loyalty rarely exists and death is one wrong turn away.
Director: Baltasar Kormákur
Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Beckinsale
Wahlberg battles his old posse the Funky Bunch and only one comes out alive. (And did you notice Kate? Double Kate month!)

The Divide
Sci-Fi/Thriller
Survivors of a nuclear attack are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic.
Director: Xavier Gens Stars: Lauren German, Jennifer Blanc, Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Michael Eklund, Ashton Holmes, Rosanna Arquette, Courtney B. Vance
This one sounds truly terrifying. Trapped in the basement with only a box of old Christmas ornaments and a stack of National Geographics. The horror!!!

20 –

Underworld Awakening
Action/Horror
When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrioress Selene leads the battle against humankind.
Directors: Måns Mårlind | Björn Stein
Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, India Eisley
Vampires, werewolves, kick-but action, and Kate. Need I say more? Yes, this will be the highlight of my January movie watching…

Red Tails
Action/War
A crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.
Director: Anthony Hemingway
Stars: Nate Parker, David Oyelowo,Cuba Gooding Jr.
The story of the Tuskegee airmen is really amazing. Let’s hope they don’t water it down with generic CGI action scenes.

24 –

DVD – Real SteelProbably real dumb, but on NetFlix, I’ll watch almost anything…

27 –

The Grey
Action/Drama
In Alaska, an oil drilling team struggle to survive after a plane crash strands them in the wild. Hunting the humans are a pack of wolves who see them as intruders.
Director: Joe Carnahan
Stars: Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo
Replace Neeson with Hopkins, Mulroney with Baldwin, and the wolves with a bear, and you have 1997's The Edge.

Man on a Ledge
Crime/Thriller
As a police psychologist works to talk down an ex-con who is threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop, the biggest diamond heist ever committed is in motion...
Director: Asger Leth Stars: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell
This could be Worthington’s career on a ledge…

Any of those sound appealing to you? (You know where I’ll be on January 20!) Set your goals for 2012? Just hoping to survive?

  1. Contagion is really good, you need to see it.

Moneyball - good, but not great.
    Drive - Incredible!

I'm interested in The Divide, The Grey and of course, Underworld 4.

Real Steel is not dumb at all. I think you might be pleasantly surprised by how emotional and heartfelt this movie is.

    ReplyDelete
  2. The Divide and Underworld Awakening both look good to me. I may have missed the last Underworld movie, but I don't it will matter if I skipped one. The others are all new ones to me. Happy New Year, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  3. George, I'm sure I will enjoy it when I see it. Drive was definitely one of the best movies of the year although not my favorite.

Brinda, the third one was like a prequel, so you didn't miss anything.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Is it sad that I look forward to the Underworld Awakening?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Dear Cap'n Alex - me not being very bright and still in need of more coffee - I had to work out what the random numbers meant. Like they're January dates. And this comment is so wrong grammatically I ought to be given the dunce's hat asap. Or a spanking. Or more coffee.

    LOL!

    Take care
    x

  6. Looks like it's gonna be a good start to the year!!

  7. I'm not overly enthused about any of these films, but I'm excited about your announcement next Friday.

  8. I already have Contagion in my netflix queue, The Divide sounds good but now I'm going to be searching for that stack of National Geographics in the corner, and yes, we can't miss Kate. ;) That would be blasphemous!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Underworld seems the most promising. And I agree, Kate is a Big Wow!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've heard Contagion is no good but I'll see for myself. I hope there's lots of great movies in 2012.

    Happy New Year Alex!

    Denise

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm intrigued, and now anticipating Monday and I'll be on the road then. Sounds like you'll have a busy 2012. Happy New Year Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  12. You had me at Kate and I think this sums it up best...

Garth Algar: That is a babe. She makes me feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class.

I can pass on the rest, have a great day and welcome in the new year...

  13. Miranda, not at all!

Kitty, I'm sorry! Is it confusing? I need to fix that.

    Lee, I wonder why!

    Laura, it would!

    Huntress, yes she is.

Denise, I've heard both ways, but I'll check it out and form my own opinion. Happy New Year!

Marta, hope you can stop by!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oo, a big announcement - you've piqued my interest. :)

  15. Looking forward to your busy week, sounds like fun. Not so sure about some of these movies though. Wishing you a safe and Happy New Year.

  16. Would never watch Contagion--or Titanic. They would spark a firestorm of real terror. On the other hand, the Divide sound rather funny in a gallows humor kind of way. In our basement, add some devious rats that would probably sneak over from the brownstone next store, owned by a horrible, sloppy landlord.

    ReplyDelete
  17. OOH, Red Tails sounds good, if you like you say, they don't water it down. Hey have you tried Crackle?

    Happy New Year my friend!

  18. Had no idea January was so...non-exciting.

I did see Real Steel and liked it. Rocky in a high-tech, robo, emotional sorta way.

Did someone say comments had to be grammatically sound. Ah-oh!

You still rank as 'one of the good guys'. Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  19. My goal is to see one movie in the theatre this year. One non-kids move, that is. The odds aren't good, but I'm an optimist.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Of those films, Drive and Contraband are probably the two I most want to see. And I'm like you...I'll watch just about anything on Netflix, especially if I can instantly download to watch.

    Happy New Year, Alex!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, it's an avalanche of events and developments that will come to your blog, thank goodness you're an expert in the language. I hope to see the best and worst of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  22. i haven't even heard of most those movies.
Though i did see Contagion in theaters (an apocalyptic real life virus movie set in MN is a recipe for success in my book) and enjoyed it quite a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i had no idea india eisley was in the new underworld movie. interesting!

i actually haven't seen any of those underworld films... are they worth a view? :P

    happy new year!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Looks like I'll be staying home In January. I will rent Real Steele - I keep thinking it has to be awful, but I keep hearing that it's pretty good. Don't know how it could be though. My curiosity is getting the better of me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Underworld will be great, but I am even more psyched for Haywire which opens January 20. Gina Carano is a black ops super soldier out for revenge on the handlers who set her up. Directed by Steven Soderbergh & stars Ewan MacGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Bill Paxton and Michael Douglas. It's going to be epic because like Kate, Gina kicks ass!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Not a lot of options for January, is there?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I loved that movie The Edge. And Underworld looks great! Maybe The Divide has some surprise twists. here's hoping!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am looking forward to the new Underworld movie!

    ReplyDelete
  29. None of these sound super appealing to me, but I did like The Edge, so maybe? I am, however, participating in my first Insecure Writer's Group and love announcements :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Happy New Year, Mason!

Catherine, might want to stay out of your basement then.

    Jules, it's on my iPad!

Thank you very much, Faraway! And there's no grammar police here, I promise.

    Bryan, you can do it!

    LG, you got it!

Sarah, doesn't bode well for those movies then, does it?

Vic, I think they are cool. They've created a really interesting mythos.

    Rusty, mine as well.

Melissa, sorry, I must've missed that one!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Red tails peaks my interest and Man on Ledge intrigues me but I don't know that I would really enjoy it. Happy movie watching!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Moneyball was one of the best flics I saw this year ... of course, I'm a B-ball fanatic, but, still ...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Looking forward to the new Underworld movie!!! :)

    Happy New Year, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love your snarky comments.

    Contagion was good. Once.

Sounds like you're going to have a happy Kate month in January. lol

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey, you forgot to mention "One for the Money" due out on 27 January, featuring Stephanie Plum. Based on a novel by Janet Evanovich.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So many movies, so little time. I definitely want to catch Red Tails. Happy New Year.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Christopher, I look forward to watching it then!

    Jamie, it will rock!

Donna, thank you, I work hard on the snark. I'll have to do a dedication to Kate sometime next month.

JL, I think I missed several!

    ReplyDelete
  38. January will truly be a Kate Fest for you :)

    Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Haha, I'll watch pretty much anything on Netflix too! Happy New Year, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I loved DRIVE. It very slick and has it's own internal rhythm that is pretty exciting. Ryan Gossling is a star.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Looking forward to your BIG announcement.

Happy New Year Alex and thanks for all your support.

    Yvonne.

    ReplyDelete
  42. wow, so many action/thrillers for those cold jan nights!
thanks for the wrap up =)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Carol, yes it will!!!

    Happy New Year, Nicole.

Cal, Drive was excellent. I was really surprised.

    Yvonne, for you, always.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I really appreciate your movie reviews and snarky comments. Can't have too many of those! When I'm reading your movie posts, I take notes in my "movies to watch" file. I'm always in the search for sci-fi which the whole family enjoys. The Engineer loves sci-fi, but has a narrower field he likes the most: post-apocalyptic scenarios. He'd love to live off-grid, and you pretty much have that situation in those movies. Did you ever watch the TV show "The Colony"? It was a reality show about just that thing. It was a bit scary how deeply into the experiment some of them got.

  45. The Divide appeals to me, since I check out any sci-fi movies.

I'll be watching Midnight in Paris again, it's a visual trip to the city. (And if you've been there it's nostalgic).

Happy New Year to you and yours, and Best wishes for 2012!

Looking forward to your News. . .

    ReplyDelete
  46. A few of those I'm going to see for sure. The Grey sounds pretty intense. Especially so because from where we are camped right now, we can hear wolves howling in the morning and evening that are very close by (no danger though).

    ReplyDelete
  47. Looking forward to your big announcement. I'll check back.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The Divide and Underworld sound awesome.

I'm also a big war film fan, and Red Tails is right up my alley.

    Have a great New Year!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hey Alex! I've wanted to see Drive and Moneyball for a while now. The rest don't really interest me...lol! I just wanna check out art house films and Brad Pitt! lol! Happy January viewing!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm definitely looking forward to Underworld. I just got Cowboys and Aliens. Looking forward to that.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Uh huh, I know what world you'll be in on the 20th--the underworld. :)

    Great line up.

    Teresa

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'll be in the front row, drooling, when UNDERWORLD comes out!

    Happy New Year, Alex! :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I haven't heard about The Divide and it intrigues me. Yet I'm so far out of the loop because they don't play commercials for such things during Sesame Street. You're my source for movie releases! I didn't know they were making another Underworld one either. Loved the first, but they faltered for me after that one. I would rather see Twilight Watch released (third in the Day Watch series. Best vampire and werewolf trilogy in film I've seen yet!)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Tina, glad I can be of service! I know of that show but afraid I've never watched it.

    Happy New Year, DG!

Pat, I wouldn't see it during a camping trip then!

Jay, I'm really hoping the movie treats the content right.

    Eve, you will dig Drive!

Charles, it's just a fun movie. And they can make many, many more Underworld movies.

DL, you the man! I want Kate's outfit for my wife but she keeps saying no...

Christine, you have only to come here for updates! The third Underworld wasn't as good, but as long as Kate is back, I am good to go.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I must avoid Contagion. Otherwise, I may never leave my house again.

I'm dying to see Drive. I wanted to see it when it was out in theaters but the closest theater to me playing it was a good two hours away. It's on my Netflix list though.

I saw a preview for Man On A Ledge. It seemed interesting.

Is Real Steel the Hugh Jackman robot boxing movie? If so, I read a lot of great reviews for it so maybe it won't be so dumb after all...

    Happy New Year.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Moneyball was interesting but to be honest I almost didn't get the main idea bcs I don't know anything about baseball :(

    ReplyDelete
  57. High hopes for the new entry in Underworld series!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks for the tips Alex. Contagion was great, I got a bad flu just after seeing it and spent all christmas in bed with a bucket....LOL! I was getting worried but the world is still here. Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I saw the previews to Red Tail and it has the makings of a fantastic flick. Great historical story. Awesome special effects. Lots of action! I'm looking forward to this one.

Contraband has lots of potential. Let's hope it lives up to the big names behind it.

The Divide: I'll wait for Yahoo! User reviews before shelling out $12. Like yourself, I'll rent just about anything on Netflix. Well, almost anything. Tried to watch The Troll Hunters but the men in troll suits with those huge snozzes was just too stupid to progress any further. Ugh!

Rented Order of the Phoenix on Amazon a couple nights ago. Best HP flick IMHO. Just have Deathly Hallows Part I and I'll have seen them all.

    ReplyDelete
  60. MJ, it is the one with Hugh Jackman. You definitely want to see Drive. Excellent film.

Javid, hopefully I know enough to figure it out then.

    Economic, very high hopes!

Siv, now that is bad timing.

Stephen you don't mean the foreign version of Trollhunter, do you? I liked that one.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm waiting to watch Real Steel on demand but I'll probably pass on the rest of them even Kate's films.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Not good with this type of movie anymore. It must be the Irish mammy in me. I will be back on Monday to check out the new....if my brain isn't too frazzled that is!!!

Have a wonderful New Years Eve celebration!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Contraband is the only one I'm interested in. I adore Mark Walberg.

Underworld's theme is getting old. I have the others on DVD, so I'll probably have to buy this one when it comes out.

Have a happy new year Alex.

    .........dhole

    ReplyDelete
  64. Some of these movies do look good and I missed them the first go-round so yay!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I am looking forward to The Grey. Almost anything with Liam Neeson in it, I will watch. We loved The Edge; Hopkins is always amazing.

Man on the Ledge--I hope it makes it; people want something non-saccharin right now.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm especially looking forward to Red Tails. It's Lucas' first actual historical piece since Tucker, which is one of the most underrated films ever.

And I really want to see Real Steel. Despite being based on Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots, it looks really good. I was bummed to miss it in the theater.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ann, at least you'll have a day to recover from New Year's.

Donna, did you see him in Boogie Nights?

Susan, The Edge was really good.

Andrew, it is Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots, isn't it? Red Tails has potential, so hope they don't screw it up.

    ReplyDelete
  68. It is literally. That was even the original title, but the reaction was so entirely negative to both the title and the idea of doing a movie based off of that game, that they changed the title and did everything they could to divorce themselves from any idea that they were connected to the game at all. From what I've heard, they pulled off a good movie.

It still doesn't make me want to see Battleship, though. That one just looks ludicrous.

    ReplyDelete
  69. When I see the movies on our tv , I will think of you.

Happy New Year Chief Ninja. Thank you for your visits, I look forward to each of them every time.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm mighty impressed with your busily scheduled dudeyness!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Already thinking out my ISWG post for Wednesday!

Not really looking forward to any of these.

I haven't set any goals for 2012 yet; I'm still thinking it over. :P

    Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Looking forward to Red Tails. Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Great to have a schedule planned out for January. Enjoy the movies. Some of them sound depressing, and January can be a very depressing month. If you don't like one of these, do you watch all of it anyway?

    Happy New Year!

    Monti
    Mary Montague Sikes

    ReplyDelete
  74. Andrew, really glad they changed the title. Yeah, I played Battleship a lot when I was a kid but I don't remember aliens!

Oceangirl, thank you, and Happy New Year!

    Patsy, thanks!

Golden, some goals will come to you.

Man O Clay, same to you!

Monti, unless it is horrible beyond all reason, I don't walk out. I paid good money!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Contagion sounds good. Maybe one Underworld was enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Oooh, DRIVE! I so wanna see that! I love me some Ryan Gosling!

Anyway, I want to wish you a very happy New Year, Alex! I'm so glad I met you this last year!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Wow, so many great movies.. okay, I'm noting down the ones I want to watch... The Grey, Underworld, The Divide and Contagion:)

    ReplyDelete
  78. This is all steering me back to the Muppets.
    Happy New Year, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I'm intrigued by Contraband, personally.

Happy New Year, Alex! Glad to have connected with you in 2011!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Lots of fun movies coming up! :)

Happy new year, Alex - wishing you all the best for 2012! :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. I swear, you're better than IMDB!
    I'm interested in:
Contraband - cause I'm sure there will be a reason that he has to take his shirt off at least once.
    and
Underworld - Lady Hotness in all her black leather wonderfulness and blood and gore? I'm in.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Nancy, thank you! I'm very glad we met as well.

TF, that's what I'm here for!

Elizabeth, not for the kids AT ALL, but really atmospheric.

Robyn, it's all about the Muppets, isn't it?

Paul, Happy New Year to you!

    Jemi, you as well.

Heather, thanks! And your description of Kate is out of this world...

    ReplyDelete
  83. I love your run-down the Jan. films. Though, I don't see any that get me overly excited.
I may consider your Insecure Writers' Support Group, but am afraid of getting kicked out for the missing-two-weeks-in-a-row rule since I already have a weekly Wed. post. But I am considering...

    ReplyDelete
  84. Contagion is on my list and I just added the divide too. I love visiting your blog my sweet friend. You always have such wonderful things to discover.Smooches and hugs and happy new year wishes!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Ho hum, looks like there will be no cinema for me this January (unless we've got different releases - must check)
    have a fun New Year!

  86. Have a fabulous New Year!!
    See you at IWSG!

  87. I'm looking forward to Underworld sooo much! Happy New year! busy captain Ninja,

  88. I'm interested in seeing The Divide. The trailer was great.

Ha, I saw the trailer for Contraband, but I can't bear to see another Mark Wahlberg film for some reason. I have to be in the mood for one of those.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Don't forget, January is also the month that all those Oscar hopefuls get wide releases. That's why there's usually a bunch of crap in January. So that there's nothing big budget to compete.

Can't wait for the big announcement!

    ReplyDelete
  90. My wife and I want to see Red Tails.
So far we do not know the publishing date for Germany.

We watched Contagius. For us it was more a documentation than a movie. The frightening element was the imagination that it can happen every day.
Anyway you start cleaning your hands more often.

    A BIG announcement on Friday?
Who bought the CassaStaR movie licence :)

Anyway thanks for a great year.

    Dear Alex,
may 2012 delivery everything you are dreaming of.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Susan, join us! It's just once a month.

    Thank you, Katherine.

Sue, January is always the dumping ground...

    MsMariah, a funky mood?

    Karen, very good point.

Edi, that's what concerns me about watching Contagion. And movie rights would so rock my world.
    Happy New Year, my friend!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Contraband and The Grey look appealing to me.

    Happy New Year, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  93. So many movies! So little time.

My goal is to write more in 2012. Might be hampered by the new job I've just signed on for, though. Saying that, I think my main goal for 2012 will be to get more organized.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Neither of those sound like my cup of tea but there is nothing like a good movie. Wishing you a Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Happy New Year, Medeia!

    Helen, sounds like a plan.

    Same to you, Wanda!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hoping to catch up on some 2011 flicks in 2012 . . . although we may watch Real Steel on Netflix DVD - have heard that it isn't so bad - "kind of a fun, heartfelt movie as long as you don't expect it to be bigger than it is" - a review from a teen in my Creative Writers' class.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Awesome, I needed new movie recommendations.
I might check out Contraband (I really like Mark Wahlberg), Undeerworld Awakening (great series, although - as this is usually the case with series - the first one was the best), The Grey (I'm a big fan of Liam Neeson plus this sounds like my cup of tea - I hope I won't be disappointed), and Man on a Ledge (sounds like a typical Hollywood bs but I'm gonna give it a try :-) )

    Happy New Year, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Thank you very much for your company and share the magic of your message with the beauty and humor that characterizes you. I wish you a happy 2012.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I definitely want to watch Drive, I was sorry I didn't see that one in the theater. I cracked up about Marky Mark battling the Funky Bunch! :D

I'm so glad you are continuing the Insecure Support Group, I had intended to join in the fall and time seemed to get away from me. Looking forward to next week's Group!

Happy New Year to you and yours, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Oh those movies look fabulous! I want to see them all. The Grey looks really good and so does Underworld Awakening!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Contraband sounds like my cup of action tea! Thanks for the heads up. And wishing you a wonderful 2012!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Some of those look pretty good... probably not get me to the theater good, but good. What I WANT though, is your NEWS! Ya big tease.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Tyrean, I'm willing to give Real Steel a chance.

Angela, Happy New Year and glad I could help.

Julie, Drive is excellent. So glad you are with us for the IWSG!

Hart, I learned teasing from the best!

    ReplyDelete
  104. I just saw the extended preview for The Grey the other day. I am really looking forward to that movie!

    ReplyDelete
  105. I proclaim I shall see them all! I will for sure be seeing UW in the theatre...Kate is best on the BIG screen!

    ReplyDelete
  106. All of these sound good and I just heard that Warhorse is good too! So little time, so many movies...

    ReplyDelete
  107. Happy New Year, Alex!
CONTAGION has received negative reviews from all my friends. There are too many movies I've heard great things about like HUGO or WARHORSE or the latest UNDERWORLD to chance it. Roland

  108. Chuck, it's going to rock!!

Conda, I saw Warhorse and it was really good.

Roland, I definitely can recommend Warhorse, and I would not miss Underworld for anything in the world.

  109. Happy New Year!!!! Survive. yup. Perfect goal. You?

  110. I was pleasantly surprised by Real Steel. It's actually really good.

Contagion was alright, too. I think that's the limit of what I've seen.

    Can't wait for Underworld!

There are several on here that I haven't heard of, but sound good.

  111. I wasn't all that thriled about seeing Real Steel but ended up really liking it.

  112. I thought real steel was ok... Not great

  113. Tanya, it's 7:15 and I'm still here, so surviving so far.

    Shannon, that's good to know.

Kimberly, hop I like it as well.

Bragon, that's why I'm not going in with high expectations.

  114. Hi Alex, just stopping by to wish you a Happy New Year! (Plus loads of great movies!)

  115. Alex: In answer to your comment ...

That's true and usually I give everyone awards, regardless of answer. So ... I went back and awarded you three barbeque frogs and one sponge.

Please enjoy and thanks for playing.

  116. ...will most definitely be taking my sons to Underworld upon its release.

    Happy New Year, Alex!

Wanted to pass along the good news that you were a contest winner in my book tour drawing ;)

Click on over when you get a moment to find out the details, and congrats!

  117. Contraband sounds good. Happy New Year, Alex. So what's the big news?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Doralynn, I'm all about the great movies!

Thank you, Whisk. Are they spicy barbequed frogs? Is that what the sponge is for - my sweaty brow?

    Elliot, really? Thanks!

Melissa, need to come back to find out.

  119. Happy New Year, Alex-

I saw the Underwold preview last week while waiting for Mission Impossible to start, and had a feeling you'd make mention of it on your blog!

  120. Happy New Year. Now be sure to practice writing 2012, 2012, 2012 before you start writing checks this year.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Larry, you knew I would!

    Lee, I promise to practice.

  122. The Grey I think the most interesting, but I have not seen any, I wish you a wonderful 2012.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Ooh, I didn't know another "Underworld" movie was coming out. I'll be looking for that one now.

    Happy New Year, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Hmmmm, what announcement!! (congrats to whatever it is! :)
    Happy New Year, Alex!

  125. Excited about Underworld! And I liked Real Steel, so hopefully you enjoy it! Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Another Underworld is coming out!? Sweet! :) How do you manage to follow and comment on all the blogs you do and still have a life?

    ReplyDelete
  127. CD, there is another one!

    Kelly, you'll find out.

    Alexia, I probably will.

Carol, Ninja skills. That and I have more than one computer both at home and at work - makes it easier!

  128. Sorry, but I love Liam Neeson. The Grey would be the one for me. I can't watch (or read) anything about viruses or the such, so Contagion is out for me. Happy 2012!

  129. Hello Alex,

Happy New Year...January 2 and am feeling sick already!

Likewise I missed you too and maybe a couple of your posts. Sadly I was not able to do a movie marathon viewing with kids this Christmas break...They were askin me to watch with them the movie "The Bad Teacher" by Cameron Diaz, I hope I remember it right...whewww...will try tonight for tomorrow, they will be back to college in the city!

    Sad!

Back to being an empty nester again!

May the new year brings you much to make you happy and contented!

  130. I think the only one I'll be watching from this list is UNDERWORLD AWAKENING - mainly because my boyfriend is a fan!

    Happy new year!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Last night on NBC Nightly News, they announced that ticket sales at theatres have dropped to the lowest point in 16 years. Why is that? Are the movies not as good as they used to be? What movies/genres/actors would you like to see that aren't there now?

    ReplyDelete
  132. I've been looking forward to Underworld for EVER. Definitely the cream of the crop here!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Amity, that's all right. Sorry you didn't get to do a movie marathon, but I'm sure you still had a good time with your kids.

    Rachel, can't miss that one!

Patricia, I think home theater viewing and movie theater prices have a lot to do with that.

    Terry, it's the highlight!

    ReplyDelete
  134. Great movie list! I can't wait for the new Underworld and neither can my husband - thanks for sharing! :)

    ReplyDelete
  135. January's movies are kind of blah for me. RED TAILS looks the best, and I'll probably see UNDERWORLD just because it's vampires and werewolves and Kate.

Oh, and you hit the nail on the head with THE GREY. I saw the trailer and was like, "I think I've seen this before..."

  136. "The story of the Tuskegee airmen is really amazing. Let’s hope they don’t water it down with generic CGI action scenes."

That's what I felt...until I saw it was a Lucasfilm production. No I have no doubt in my mind that it will be watered down with generic CGI action scenes. Prequels anyone? Great list, I'm actually looking forward to watching Mark Marky battle his funky demons.
