It’s that time again!
Don’t forget, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil comes out this Friday, although those with Direct TV’s HDNet can see it tonight, Wednesday! (Rusty, don’t forget to set the DVR…)
Rather sparse for October, so threw in some DVD releases. As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.
4 –
DVD Release – Fast Five
One of the best movies this year!
7 –
Real Steel
Director: Shawn Levy
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly
The Plot: A future-set story where robot boxing is a popular sport and centered on a struggling promoter (Jackman) who thinks he's found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful rise to the top, he also discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father.
Sounds goofy. Every time I see the commercial, all I can think about are Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots…
The Ides of March
Director: George Clooney
Stars: Paul Giamatti, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ryan Gosling
The Plot: An idealistic staff member (Gosling) for presidential hopeful (Clooney) gets a crash course on dirty politics during his stint on the campaign trail.
Excellent cast.
14 –
The Thing
Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen
The Plot: At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd (Winstead) and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson (Thomsen). While Dr. Halvorson keeps to his research, Kate partners with Sam Carter (Edgerton), a helicopter pilot, to pursue the alien life form.
This is a prequel to Carpenter’s master, The Thing, so we all know how it ends…
Footloose
Director: Craig Brewer
Stars: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid
The Plot: City kid Ren McCormack (Wormald) moves to a small town where rock 'n' roll and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace.
Absolutely no need for a remake. Not a chance I’ll give money to this film. It’s more than six degrees from Kevin Bacon!
DVD Release – Green Lantern
Hey, I enjoyed it! So sue me.
18 –
DVD Release – Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
It was fun. Better than the last two!
21 –
The Three Musketeers
Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Stars: Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson
The Plot: D'Artagnan (Lerman) and his musketeer comrades Athos (Macfadyen), Porthos (Stevenson) and Aramis (Evans) thwart the plans of Royal Prime Minister Richelieu to usurp the King's power.
Could be fun. Could be average.
28 –
In Time
Stars: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, Olivia Wilde
The Plot: Set in a world where people stop aging at 25, but are genetically-engineered to live only one more year, having the means to buy your way out of the situation is a shot at immortal youth. Here, a young man (Timberlake) accused of murder goes on the run with a hostage (Seyfried), though their eventual connection becomes an important part of the way against the system.
This one sounds intriguing. Wonder if Olivia Wilde will be naked again?
The Rum Diary
Director: Bruce Robinson
Stars: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart
The Plot: American journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the 1950s and struggles to find a balance between island culture and the ex-patriots who live there.
Not sure why, but the preview amuses me.
Any strike your fancy?
Special announcement this Friday! Want to know what it is? Well, I’m not telling…
The Ides of March looks interesting.
ReplyDeleteReal Steel looks lots of fun. I'm excited about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about The Thing as well. Hopefully they did a good job with it.
Loved the "Three Musketeers" and I'm really looking forward to it.
Saw Tucker and Dale about 5 months ago, and it was hilarious! :)
Can't wait for The Three Musketeers/ Thanks J=)
ReplyDeleteEh. Seems a bit lackluster to me. What's with the constant remakes? Your rockin' sockin' robots comment gave me a good laugh!
ReplyDeletemovies all sound middle of the road good... and i agree with "Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots" ah i mean reel steel. i just want to know if we will get controls to punch the disney exc. who said thumbs up on this film. now make the noise in your head...
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot on that list that look great. I want to see Real Steel and Three Musketeers.
ReplyDeleteYou mean it isn't based on the Rock Em Sock Em guys??? Really? We assumed it was :)
ReplyDeleteI'm tired of remakes, and I can't believe they're attempting one of Footloose. They gonna redo Dirty Dancing Too? I think Moneyball with Brad Pitt looks good. But I'm not sure when it comes out.
ReplyDeleteI want to see The Thing. I hope I remember to watch it during daylight hours. :)
ReplyDeleteFootloose. Boy, are they that desperate for new ideas? I've got a ton of them I can sell! My husband is very excited for The Rum Diary. As for your news, yes, I want to know what it is. Is CassaStar being made into a film?!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to Ides Of March and The Three Musketeers.
ReplyDeleteReal Steel just looks ridiculous. Hollywood finally made Battlebots: The Movie!
DVR set. After reading this morning's post of course. Might catch one or two of those Oct movies, nothing I'm anxious for though.
ReplyDeleteI just have to hope against hope that no one screws around with the DVR today. Too many people in the house. Someone will.
Oh, gosh. I just don't know about Real Steel......
ReplyDeleteI really want to want to like it or watch it....Ugh, we'll see. I'm not anticipating very good reveiws, though.
Wow. Lots coming out. I liked Green Lantern, too. And I thought this Pirates was better than the previous two as well.
ReplyDeleteHuh, interesting. Maybe it's just because I feel sort of crummy this morning, but not one of those strikes my fancy. Well, except Stranger Tides coming out on DVD, but I won't get that till Christmas. :(
ReplyDeleteReal Steel looks like it could make next years Worst Movies blog fest. I mean I've never heard of a dumber premise for a story.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, some of these look cool.
The Ides of March is the only one I would like to see but probably won't.
ReplyDeleteThe Justin Timberlake sounds like a remake of (that science fiction movie in the 80's where you were killed when you reach a certain age, it starred Jeff Bridges maybe, I think you might know which one I mean, but I'm old now and can't remember) uh, yeah, that one.
Sorry about Friday.
I've read The Rum Diary and that could make an interesting film. The book is by Hunter S. Thompson and is loosely autobiographical about his early years as a cub reporter in Puerto Rico.
ReplyDeleteAll of these movies sound great! I am super excited about Reel Steel and The Thing though, and just might have to go see them at the theaters. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like nothing until the holidays. yawn
ReplyDeleteI will definitely see "The Thing," since the Carpenter "Thing" is one of my favorite horror films of all time.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely some good ones in there I'm looking forward to. The Clooney movie does have a great cast. Hard to imagine that one disappointing. Also, I think In Time has a really interesting premise. I want to see that one.
ReplyDeleteIdes of March has promise. I hope The Thing is awesome ... been looking forward to this movie for over a year. And after watching the previews for Three Muskateers, it has dumb written all over it. I'm sure I'll pass on that one unless wifey wants to see it. More than six degrees from Kevin Bacon? Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteWhy remake Footloose? The original's a classic. Fools! But George Clooney always has my attention.
ReplyDeleteI think movie theaters should have giant hitching posts for children.
ReplyDeleteThe Ides of March and maybe Real Steel (okay, maybe because of Hugh Jackman). And I totally agree with you about remaking Footloose.
ReplyDeleteReal Steel caught my eye. (gee, I wonder why)and The Three Musketeers. I've enjoyed the re-makes including Gene Kelly and the one by Raquel Welch. The last one with Chris O'Donnell wasn't bad either.
ReplyDeleteIn Time looks interesting but I prefer Mr. Timberlake in the buff.
Just saying.
Nothing here grabs me that much. In Time might be interesting, but I think it will be a let down. I'm getting so jaded with film watching. Back to my films of 1948.
ReplyDeleteLee
Tossing It Out
I got a free copy of Tucker & Dale vs. Evil Alex. It's a couple of gigs and is the actual movie. I can burn it on a cd and send it to you or ask the guy I got it from where you can download it online if you want to watch it.
ReplyDeleteThese are DVD releases? Man, am out of the loop ... I thought they were upcoming feature releases!
ReplyDeleteThe Ides of March looks interesting. I saw a preview for Real Steel last night and it made me laugh and wonder if it was real movie because it does seem very, very goofy.
ReplyDeleteThe robot fighting one sounded kinda cheesy but I like Hugh Jackman and will watch it just for him. Then there's George Clooney...the actors do make the movies. I will add these to my list. :)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to Rum Diary, The Thing and Three Musketeers. I also want to see Munger Road, an indie film based on some local ghost legends here in Chitown. Stars Bruce Davison. It opens Friday. Technically that's still Sept, but close enough. :)
ReplyDelete'The Rum Diary' caught my eye.
ReplyDeleteYou added commentary gave me a much-needed laugh this morning! I especially love the comment about Footloose and being more than six degrees from Kevin Bacon!! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI must not be in a good movie mood this morning. Nothing on the list appealed to me.
ReplyDeleteSome of these films look pretty cool, but that 3 Musketeers thing drives me nuts. I love Dumas' books, but turning it into steam-punk isn't my idea of a good homage. Just my humble opinion;)
ReplyDeleteGeorge, five months ago? So not fair. Can't wait to see it tonight.
ReplyDeleteLaura, if I can make you laugh, then that's enough!
Jeremy, good question.
Jemi, if it sucks, then maybe it should've been based on the game.
Yvonne, not to scare you, but yes - there is a rumor of a Dirty Dancing remake.
Christine, I wouldn't make you wait if that was the case!
Rusty, have faith! I'll send you another reminder this evening.
Donna, you have excellent taste in movies!
Matthew, there's always that chance.
Anne, don't worry about me - sorry your book is delayed! And there was a movie in the mid 70's called Logan's Run that is similar in idea.
Charles, it's one of my favorites as well.
Stephen, thank you!
Karen, that's what I say!
Bryan, I like that idea!
Huntress, who knows - you might see that!
Michael, thanks - I'll see it tonight, trust me!
Christopher, it's a mix.
MJ, goofy is an understatement.
Jen, never thought of that, but you're right.
Susan, I am here for your amusement!
Mark, I don't have high hopes either.
The Ides of March sounds good. In Time kinda reminds me of Logan's Run.
ReplyDeleteSia McKye's Thoughts...OVER COFFEE
Sorry I've been MIA, but this cold has been kicking my booty.
ReplyDeleteMany of these movies I haven't heard of. Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to The Three Musketeers. Saw a preview for it a few weeks ago. Ides of March sounds good. In Time could be hit or miss, but I think it would be good as a book.
Good to know The Thing is a prequel and not a remake. I really enjoyed the original. Footloose, haha, right there with you. Not one dime.
I've been interested in In Time since I saw a trailer a week or two ago. Just an interesting idea, having our economy become time based.
ReplyDeleteStill haven't seen the Pirates movie. Thanks for reminding me that I want to.
ReplyDeleteRock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots! Same thoughts here.
ReplyDeleteI still want to see Green Lantern!
ReplyDeletemy son loved fast five
ReplyDeletereal steel looked good in the theater trailer i saw (and cant go wrong w/ hugh jackman!)
the rest i will wait for hbo =)
thanks for the reviews!
I also think of Rock'em Sock'em Robots..looks odd. The Rum Diary I haven't seen...will go look it up.
ReplyDeleteIn Time could be as you said, intriguing. It has the look of Sin City~
Clooney for President...mmh, has promise!
Well you know "In Time " sound good to me. After all it's the name of my blog ....
ReplyDeleteRum Diary sounds like, in Depp's capable hands, it could be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI recently watched 'Eat Pray Love' and it is definitely better as a novel than I film. Such a personal journey with more depth than the slow film portrayed, it would have benefited from some narration I think.
In Time kind of reminds me of Logan's Run with the whole 'expire at a certain age' thing. But it looks interesting.
ReplyDeleteLOL I *totally* think of Rock Em Sock Em Robots when I think of Real Steel. I think we will probably preview this for our boys, and Muskateers too, in hopes we could take them to see them. We'll see.
ReplyDeleteProbably the one I'm most interested in is IN TIME. Very intrigued.
In Time sounds intriguing but Rum Diary has Johnny Depp (yes, I am one of THOSE - a big Depp fan). I saw the movie trailer for it and it seems pretty ingriguing as well.
ReplyDeleteSomeone is going to be very busy viewing in October.
ReplyDeleteMy review for October is Wednesday 5th, At Bristol UK. a Concert of Daniel O Donnell.
Happy viewing.
Yvonne.
I am so much looking forward to the Ides of March! But I didn't know about the Rum Diary. Love Johnny Depp--so I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for that too.
ReplyDeleteI've been waiting for somebody to make that Kevin Bacon joke. That movie IS Kevin Bacon. It's like remaking Being John Malkovich without Malkovich. What were they thinking?
Sia, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteIsis, kick its booty right back!
Charlie, wouldn't that be awful?
Jeffrey, it was fun! Leave brain at door.
Michael, so true!
Lindsay, that's what everyone is thinking...
Angela, Depp is usually pretty cool in his roles.
Yvonne, I'd like to know how many times you've seen him!
Anne, there you go! Answer - you can't.
What is it with Depp and Rum???? :) The 3 musketeers could be interesting - although, I'm not sure I buy Milla Jovovich doing her RE thing in a dress...in the 17th century. But - could be fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm sick and tired of all the remakes! Can't anyone come up with their own original ideas?
ReplyDeleteReally? Another Three Musketeers? How many times must the story be told?
Ryan Gosling seems to be taking over the world.
ReplyDeletemood
I love Rock Sock Em Robots and I like Hugh Jackman so that one is must see for me.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is psyched for Rock 'em Sock 'ems. I told him he'd have to go by himself. lol
ReplyDeleteWill have to pick up pirates when it comes out. The trailers for Musketeers look fun.
Oh, no! No more remakes. Have you heard there will be a remake of Dirty Dancing? I don't think ANY remake can top the original with Patrick Swayze.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I feel relieved that The Thing will be a prequel and not a remake! Phew.
None of them really jump out at me . . . thanks for the preview, though!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to finding out what this announcement is. :)
The Ides of March, I think it will be one of the great films of the season, I hope not to miss it. I love George Clooney as an actor and director.
ReplyDeleteAnother Footloose? What special effects did we lack in 1984 that makes the original so dated?
ReplyDeleteHaha, I think you're the first person I've heard say he enjoyed Green Lantern :)...I didn't know they were doing another Three Muskateers.
ReplyDeleteI am very excited about this announcement.. the suspense Alex!
I want to see the Three Musketeers, Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) is there!
ReplyDeleteEvery Savage Can Reproduce
The remakes make me feel old. I remember when the Thing and Footloose were new releases. Siiigh ;)
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to see the The Three Musketeers and In Time.
Am I wrong for liking the 90s 3 musketeers one with the cheesy Brian Adams song?
ReplyDeleteDonea, I just wonder if she kicks ass at any point?
ReplyDeleteDanjor, probably another twenty times or so.
Mary, send him on!
Angela, yes, I've heard. Sad.
Leovi, I think it will be good.
Diane, must be the dance moves.
Lynda, make me feel old as well.
Copyboy, you mean The Man In The Iron Mask? Good movie!
The last two strike my fancy Alex...:)
ReplyDeleteMust see these movies anytime soon!
I have joined the Insecure Writer's Support Group and I will have my first blog come the first Wednesday of October and would start my blog hop by then...I hope that would be fine Alex!
I guess, I really belong to that group :D
Have a nice day!
Alex, how do I change my enlistment in your Insecure Writers' Army to redirect traffic to Analog Breakfast instead of Girl Wizard, since Analog is my writing blog?
ReplyDeleteJohnny Depp. I mean The Rum Diary :).
ReplyDeleteI've wanted to see Real Steal for awhile now. The ads in the beginning of promos were all about the kid and his journey. The ads now are about how HOT Hugh Jackman is. HOW CAN I PASS THIS UP?
ReplyDeleteRock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot -- that's too funny. But I actually like the sound of this one. I used to love boxing when I was in my early twenties.
ReplyDeleteThe Thing!! Yay! I loved the original, and I loved Carpenter's version, so I should like this new one too.
Thanks for the recommends. I'm always looking for new movies to watch.
I'm sorry, but Real Steel looks dorky.
ReplyDeleteI'd watch 3 Musketeers just to listen to Macfayden's voice. It's gawgeous.
Have been contemplating whether to watch Real Steel or not... hmm not yet convinced.. might have to wait till it comes out on DVD here in Australia.
ReplyDeleteAmity, that's perfect!
ReplyDeleteSuze, I'll fix it for you.
I really want to see some reviews first before seeing Real Steel...
From your list I'd see the Ides of March. Well, George Clooney's in it.
ReplyDeleteDenise
aww... no love for the Footloose. And I've heard that Real Steel is supposed to be good, although I agree w/you... Nope. Looks like Ides for me~
ReplyDeleteNothing jumps out at me. I'll probably give a couple of them a try though. I loved your Kevin Bacon comment. LOL
ReplyDeleteThe Ides of March sounds like a maybe. In Time sounds promising, whether Olivia's naked or not. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alex. Passed the list along to DH. He has enjoyed several of your recommendations this year.
ReplyDeleteThat Real Steel commercial made me think of the Rock "Em Sock 'Em Robots too!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely no need for a Footloose remake. Reeks of desperation, but now, the original will run on TV a few times to promote it.
ReplyDeleteCan the Musketeers match the Disney one? Sutherland, Sheen, Platt (who just rocked it), O'Donnell, and Curry -- could it possibly get better?
I agree with your regarding Footloose. Why make it a re-make? And sex-it-up? Sad really. I loved the original Three Muskateers (and the book) and have entertained the thought of watching the re-make of this one, but agree with Will that it would be tough to match the talented cast of the first one!
ReplyDeleteStuart, somebody will market it as a candy bar!
ReplyDeleteGlynis, glad I could help.
It's a slow month, but I'm all about The Thing. I was skeptical, but it's really looking good.
ReplyDeleteThey're remaking footloose??!! WHY???? Some things are best left in the 80's. None of those seem like something I'd watch but I don't watch much so that doesn't say much about me lool. I'm dying for Wednesday.. I've been waiting for it for two weeks now.. lol
ReplyDeleteIn Time sounds interesting to me, but only if it's not a remake/plot steal of Logan's Run. I enjoyed LR when I saw it (years ago), but I'm hoping this one will be more original.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about Footloose. Why can't Hollywood make something great and leave it alone? Same thing with Dirty Dancing, in my opinion. Leave. It. Alone.
ReplyDeleteIdes of March sounds awesome, although I wish it had a different title.
I'm excited for Real Steel! and I'm pained to admit that I'm a sucker for Three Musketeer movies, good or bad. We'll likely go see In Time as well! But I won't be hoping for any nakedness. I'll just be enjoying the movie. ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt angers me too when they remake some of the old greats like Dirty Dancing and Footloose. I know I'm out of the movie loop but since when does Clooney direct movies?
ReplyDeleteBe well, Alex.
xoRobyn
PS Oops, just did my research. I see Clooney was named "most promising new director" in 02. He's more talented than I thought. =)
ReplyDeleteDafeenah, less than a week!
ReplyDeleteJennie, the naked part is a guy thing...
Robyn, that was a few years ago!
I'm excited about The Ides of March. I love Clooney and Hoffman.
ReplyDeleteThe Rum Diary, it seems very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe Rum Diary, it seems very interesting.
ReplyDeleteLeovi, I think The Rum Diary will be fun.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to the three musketeers, and if it wasn't for JT, I'd be all over 'In Time". I enjoyed Green Lantern too, so you're in good company there :) I'm still in 2 minds about Real Steel.
ReplyDeleteI'd give all these a go... maybe Footloose last... only for the dancing. But yeah, you're right.. why remake?? just do something new for pete's sake!
ReplyDeleteAlex, thanks so much! I am focusing exclusively on the writing blog for the time being and am really looking forward to this Wednesday's participation.
ReplyDeleteA remake of Footloose? no. no. no.
ReplyDeleteLx
I'm really looking forward to The Thing, but I really hope they don't mess it up. The more I see about it, the more it looks like a remake. I'm also looking forward to Three Musketeers, but I do wonder how many times they're going to remake that movie.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing fast five! I don't think I"ll be going to the theater this month.
ReplyDeleteJust saw Bridesmaids last night and my face was sore from laughing. Really really funny!
Ides of March looks cool, but when I saw the poster for the Three Musketeers at my local theater, I just shook my head sadly. Really?! Another one?!
ReplyDeleteYou had me at Cillian Murphy. I'll probably see In Time. And The Rum Diary because, let's face it, Johnny Depp is made of awesome.
ReplyDeleteThe rest, though...meh.
And there are NO WORDS for how annoyed I am about Footloose. Stupid. I won't see it. I won't even watch it when it shows up on some cable channel or one of the networks. Just on principle.
