August Movie Preview

August is usually a little sparse when it comes to quality theater releases, so I’ve included a couple DVD releases as well. As always, don’t forget the popcorn!

Aug. 3 - DVD - Kick-Ass

It didn’t intrigue me enough to visit the theater, but I’ll check it out on NetFlix.
.

Aug. 6 – The Other Guys

Director: Adam McKay
Stars: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg
Two mismatched New York City detectives (Ferrell and Wahlberg) seize an opportunity to step up like the city's top cops whom they idolize -- only things don't quite go as planned.
Not sure on this one yet...

Aug. 10 - DVD - Date Night

I’m a big fan of Steve Carell (especially The Office) and Tiny Fey (from 30 Rock) so this is in my NetFlix queue right now.
.

Aug. 13 - The Expendables

Director: Sylvester Stallone
Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis
A team of mercenaries head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.
Has potential!

Aug. 27 - Centurion

Director: Neil Marshall
Stars: Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko
After the Roman Ninth Legion is attacked by the Picts -- Celtic tribesmen who serve as some of the Roman Empire's toughest opposition -- a band of soldiers who survived the brutal massacre try to make their way back across enemy lines.
Okay, this movie excites me! In a violent, bloody, action sort of way.
.
Any good movies on your radar for August?

  1. Curious about the Stallone one -- he's been kinda flailing for years.

  4. Interesting movies. Wonder how the Stallone movie will do with him and Willis in it, not to mention Rourke.

  6. The one with Stallone has so many great stars. And probably martial arts. I love movies with martial arts.

  7. "The Expendables" has a cast I really like, lets just they don't let us down. :)

  8. Alex, I've heard good things about Date Night. Wasn't sure about it when I saw the previews, but now I'm looking forward to checking it out on the small screen. :)

  9. These all look pretty good. I'm with you on the rental thing too, it's just too damn expensive to actually see a movie in the theater these days ... except for maybe Inception ... hmmm

  10. Woo, Centurion! Can't wait. If it's half as good as ROME, then I'll love it.

  11. I watched Kick Ass recently and hated it!!

  12. Nebular, I guess I just selected what interested me.
    Matthew, go see Inception!
Eternally, that's why I didn't see it in the theater.
And would be nice to see Stallone do a good movie.

  13. I mean, Alex, seriously -Will Ferrell?!?!? :)
And you know which one is my favourite among these - yep, the Roman and Fassbendery one ;)

  14. I loved loved loved kick ass. it's very dark and slightly bizarre which is right up my alley. There's a scene near the end with nick cage and it made the movie for me.

  15. I love reading your reviews as I do like to know what todays films are all about,

    Yvonne.

  16. Date Night sounds like a good one - 2 talented actors :)

  17. kick ass and date night were awesome! can't wait to watch them again.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Looking forward to those! Mind you, they prob won't be released here for another 6 months!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ohh, Centurion sounds really interesting. Hadn't heard of this one before.

  20. Hm. None of these movies really appeal to me! My husband and I use a DVD rental service called LoveFilm, where they send us DVDs in the post. It's great because they have a really wide selection and we can watch whatever we like! Tonight's selection: Nowhere Boy. I'm looking forward to it!

  21. I'm looking forward to The Other Guys and Centurion. The rest - meh. Kick Ass actually is one I'll for sure avoid, for a few reasons.

  22. I say 'The Expendables' and 'Date Night.' I love Steve Carrell!

We just watched 'Brooklyn's Finest' with Don Cheadle and just about everyone else. Dark, disturbing, but riveting.

  23. Some films that look like they'd be worth checking out are gonna be released next month! Centurion is at the top of my list, I love anything that deals with Rome (Spartacus Blood and Sand comes to mind). The Expendables and The Other Guys look like they could be decent. As for the DVD releases, they don't look too exciting, Kick-Ass was decent but overrated. Haven't seen Date Night but I'm starting to lose my interest in Steve Carrell. Thanks for this Alex.

One question though, is Centurion actually being released in North American theatres, or just at a film festival? When I last looked a it, it was getting a film festival release the same time it was getting a DVD release in the UK. Hopefully it gets full theatre release here, I really want to see it. Cheers.

  24. I haven't been to the movies in a long time. I'm gonna have to rent movies to catch up.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I still have to see Inception. Salt is on my list too. Kick Ass is also in my rental future.

  26. I saw Date Night. I enjoy both Steve Carell and Tina Fey but the plot was a bit predictable. Marky Mark was a nice touch.

  27. Dez, sometimes he's funny.

Allomorph, sorry you have to wait!

Talli, here we have NetFlix - same concept.

Bryan, as far as I know it's a wide release for N America.

  28. I absolutely LOVED Kick-Ass! It was one of those unexpectedly good movies that I randomly picked without knowing a whole lot about it. I'm really glad I saw it, though, and this might be one of the few movies I'll grant myself a DVD copy of (I'm trying to limit my DVD collection - I have too many as it is).

By the way, I saw "Inception" this Saturday, partly as a result of your recommendation. I really liked it, even though there were elements that also disappointed me. But it triggered the most interesting discussion with my friends, and overall I'm really glad I saw this one. So thanks :)

  29. I don't see movies in theaters very often these days, and I think I already mentioned how much I liked the new Karate Kid.

The DVD I chose last night was The Road. I thought the film was well done, but that made it even more scary and depressing. I need to move a comedy next up in my Netflix queue.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I still haven't made it to Knight & Day or Despicable Me!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Glad it sparked conversation, Cruella. My wife and I talked about it for hours afterwards.

Patricia, I want to see The Road but I know it's depressing.

  32. I've heard good things about Kick Ass, but I also understand that I might be offended by some of the language.

Centurion sounds like it might be worth checking into.

  34. I didn't want to see the Other Guys, until I saw the promo with Will Farrell drinking the water with the cucumber in it. That made me laugh long and hard.

  35. I will defintely see Kick Ass and The Expendables...the rest mehby.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have been breathlessly awaiting The Expendables for well over a year. I also want to see Dinner with Schmucks. On the DVD end, those are great choices - Kick Ass and Date Night were very good.

  37. I'm looking forward to seeing at least 4 of these. Thanks for the reviews, Alex! :-) ~ Coreen

  38. I heard Kick Ass and Date Night were good. I'll check those out too. I'm also interested in Eat. Pray. Love. I read the book and I like Julia Roberts, so we'll see.

  39. You forgot to mention that Arnold Schwarzenegger is in the Expendables. It's his first flick since 2004.

I forgot about Kick-Ass. That is going on my queue as well.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I will pass these onto DH, thanks Alex. :)
