RiffTrax Sharknado 2 Review! Plus Minions Review, How Often Should You Blog, Box Office Results, and Ninja News

RiffTrax Live – Sharknado 2 Review and Feature

On July 9 (with an encore presentation on July 16), the RiffTrax crew tackled a classice – Sharknado 2.

I felt bad for the guys. Apparently, something was wrong with the Belcourt Theater in Nashville. All three were drenched in sweat before the movie even began.

Preceding the film was a short – Why Do I Need Parents. (Or something really close to that title.) It was hilarious and had a great Bruce Wayne reference.

Sharknado 2 was funny even though it was a tough movie to riff. How do you come up with jokes for a movie that’s intentionally trying to be terrible? But the gang was up for the challenge, and the Al Roker poop jokes kept me in stitches.

All in all, another solid effort from RiffTrax! And their next show in October promises to be even funnier when they tackle the film Miami Connection.

As always, before the show began, they ran a series of humorous slides. Below are some of the best ones.

Minions Movie Review

Kevin, Stuart, and Bob set out to find an evil master to serve to save their tribe.
It’s the Minions from the Despicable Me series. If you go to this film expecting more than silly fun, you will be disappointed.
The Minions spend the film doing what they do best – being cute, bumbling, mischievous, innocent creatures. There are a lot of visual jokes and silly one-liners. You’ll pick up just enough of the Minion gibberish to know what they are saying.
The special effects are sharp and the 3D adds to the bright and colorful film.
The film is light and the storyline a bit on the thin side. There’s no real message other than revealing what the Minions did before they found Gru. There’s a chance you won’t remember it a month from now, but you will have had a good laugh for an hour and a half.
Fun for adults and kids, just plan for silliness.

Box Office Charts Bonanza

Minions broke records in several countries over the past few weeks and made over $115 million dollars here in the USA. Can you imagine what they will do in merchandising?

Meanwhile, the top movies on the All-Time World Wide Box Office chart has changed a bit over the past few months. While Avengers: Age of Ultron was expected to be near the top, both Furious 7 and Jurassic World were surprise contenders.
As of Sunday, the top of the billion dollar club looked like this:
1 - Avatar;$2,788.0
2 - Titanic;$2,186.8
3 - Marvel's The Avengers;$1,518.6
4 - Furious 7;$1,511.6
5 - Jurassic World;$1,465.8
6 - Avengers: Age of Ultron;$1,388.5
Despite Jurassic World’s steam, I’m not sure it will pass Titanic, and it certainly won’t pass Avatar.

How Often Should You Post on Your Blog?

Two weeks ago, I posted about the best time for blog posts HERE. According to the research, early morning Eastern time was the best and nighttime Eastern time the worst. You guys weighed in with your thoughts, some saying content mattered more than time.

Last week, Holly Sinclair posted on when is the best day to blog. Her research said that Wednesday was the best day, although some in the comments said Monday.

Now – how often should you post on your blog?

Pushing Social had this to say on frequency – monthly makes your blog look abandoned, weekly is better but many do that and you’ll be fighting for reader attention, when you feel like it the worst, and every weekday the best.

The Blogpress said that it was better to have two posts a week that were informative than several that were sparse. They said daily posting is good for traffic, but only if you can maintain that pace with quality posts. And ultimately, consistency was far more important than how often.

Now, I think a lot of this depends on what you are blogging about, plus what you are trying to accomplish and what you can manage.

I am once a week except during the Challenge. I know quite a few of us who are once a week. There are many who are three times a week. Some are daily. It all depends on what works best for the blogger. But that range seems to be the best. (And there are exceptions, like The Geek Twins who post geek news twice daily on weekdays. That is a perfect range for them.)

With the exception of Insecure Writer’s Support Group post day and during the A to Z Challenge, once a week works best for me. I can pack a lot into one post and be set all week. Plus I don’t want to post on days I can’t visit others. With as many followers and commenters as I have, committing to do that more often is really tiring. (Which is why I am exhausted by the end of IWSG post day and really wiped out by the end of April.)

So, how frequently should someone post? How frequently do you post?

Did you see RiffTrax tackle Sharknado 2 last week? (If you missed it, you can go on July 16.) Did you see Minions? Does the box office surprise you? And how frequently should a blog post?

I am leaving July 14 for a vacation in the mountains and will be gone all week! I will check in every morning, visiting a couple blogs, returning comments, and checking emails. But otherwise, I’ve promised my wife I will stay offline. If anything really awesome happens in my absence, send me an email so I can mention it next Monday.

As always always much news about what is going on, Interesting about that theatre in Nashville.....a place dear to my heart.
I love to blog every day as it fives me something to keep me occupied but find the week-end blogs a wasrte of time to put on as not many people are blogging.
Have a good week in the mountains and enjoy yourself.

I'm kinda surprised Jurassic World is yet to surpass Furious 7 at the global box office, considering how quickly it rose to a billion. It is yet to open in Japan for some reason though, so I can totally see it surpassing both Furious 7 and The Avengers when it does.

Love those slides. Have a wonderful holiday - and come back refreshed.

I haven't seen Minions, still need to see Despicable Me! I agree with you that it's the purpose and function of a blog that should determine how often one posts. If it's an interactive blog like many writers enjoy doing, then posting too often can wear yourself and others out with comments and return visits. I'm too spontaneous to keep to a schedule so I post when I have something I want to say, which may happen once a week or once a month.

kaykuala said...

One may enjoy the slides more than the 'sweating' experience. A good laugh is anytime better.Minions sure have potential. The unique kind of 'toys' look inviting on the market, that's for merchandising to exploit.

Enjoy your holiday! You definitely deserve it. I try to blog once a week, but sometimes it's longer. I don't want to blog if I don't have something interesting to say.

I used to blog every weekday, but cutting back to three posts a week gives me more time for writing--and helps me avoid writing "filler" posts.

Good Morning Alex,

I hope you and your wife have a lovely vacation. Enjoy the moments. I am taking one next week, I so need it. So, I probably wont' be seeing you around for a couple of weeks.

Natalie Aguirre said...

My daughter and her boyfriend saw Minions and really liked it.

I have cut back to once to twice a week blogging. I think that is a good balance with people cutting back on reading blogs. I could have more guest posts and interviews but say no because I don't have the time and I don't think more blogging will get them a good response.

Have fun on your trip and stay off the computer!

Hope you have a great break!

Those slides are great...nice way to pull in the audience.

I used to blog every day for years. But I've just gotten too swamped. I like 3 times a week.

Those slideshow pics cracked me up!

Thanks for the mention. I agree that how many days you post depends on your goal and the type of blog you have. I think if you have a set of loyal readers, posting daily can be exhausting for them. I post once a week as that works for me.

Have fun in the mountains!

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

I post Mondays, and I aim for another post during the week but that doesn't always work out.

Looking forward to some Minion fun next weekend!

Have a wonderful vacation, Alex! You deserve the break. :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Michael, I definitely think it was pass both those movies and probably within the next week or so.

Karen, agree that posting too often can wear you out. Another reason why I only post once a week.

Sandra, smart move.

Truedessa, you enjoy your vacation!

Natalie, more is not always better.

Patsy, only from the mind of someone desperate for an idea...

Holly, glad you enjoyed the slides!

Thanks, everyone!

Blogging has become a mystery anymore, this week I finally got the "catch up" and was able to have some solid real posts. I know the last few months have been hit or miss, I think to blog daily is good... but what seems to be the best is catchy titles. So just have a good post that people can relate with, that is where you will find your audience.

For films, I am not sure what I am excited to see next... nothing grabs me... except Suicide Squad, B vs S and not a movie, but "Ash vs The Evil Dead".

Have a super time away, try to be offline... your wife knows best!

I like the minions but couldn't get on with the original movie. Where do you see Rifftrax, on stage or on TV? I loved Groot.

You know me, every day at my sea. It works because I can post on anything and everything. If I was limited it could bore me and readers if I posted every day. I've been hoping something would knock Titanic off the top two, just to annoy smug Cameron some. Not sure Jurassic World will do it though. Thanks for the shout and enjoy the vacation.

Dianne K. Salerni said...

I caught the last third of the original Sharknado movie -- and that was really all I needed to see! Love the slides about Chewbacca and the cat on the keyboard explaining the screenplay for San Andreas!

Thanks for hosting me at IWSG today!

Those slides are amazing. That Fifty Shades one killed me (in humor, and in spirit).

One size doesn't fit all for blogging. We blog once a week, and it works well for us. We just don't have the time to blog any more than that and still write books and be productive. Drawing cartoons isn't something we can do every day. To those who can blog every day or even 3 times a week - we salute you. We just physically can't.

I bought my daughter the Minion book to inspire her to read this summer. Its so hard finding kids books sometimes. Anyway, I told her as soon as she finishes the book, I'd take her to see the movie. Thanks for the review. Sometimes you never know with sequels or spin-offs.

Enjoy your vacation! Sounds wonderful!

Shell Flower said...

Hahaha, now I am going to picture your minions as little yellow guys. Blogging once or twice a week is probably best, but I can never seem to keep up with that. I see a lot of folks blog in spurts, but once a week is probably the way to stay consistent unless you are just a prolific writer. Have an awesome vacation and good for your wife for encouraging you to stay offline for a bit. It's healthy to get away.

LOVED the demon traffic light. ;-)

As for how regularly I post, I used to post every weekday, and I think it's part of why my blog grew the way it did. But I finally scaled back this year, simply because I don't have that sort of time with two exporting companies and my publishing career to handle.

So now it's MWF for me.

My posting has been erratic except for the regular Thursday guest blogger. I'm trying to develop a better routine, but it seems every time I make a decision, some life complication messes it up. As a result, I'm mostly going with the flow these days. It's much less stressful. :D

Christine Rains said...

I'd have loved to see that RiffTrax! We did make it to Minions on the weekend and it was good. Though I do prefer Gru plus the minions rather than all minions. I know lots of folks like once a week since that gives them time to write. My regular schedule (which will start again in August) is three days with Monday being the busiest day. Have a lovely vacation!

Love the image and poem. I'll never look at traffic lights in the same way again.

I feel terrible when I don't blog at least once a month. So I guess that's my minimum? I usually only do it if I have quality content to put up and if life isn't in the way. :)

The Happy Whisk said...

Whatever time works for me, that's when I post. As you know, I am not into the rules of blogging, or any of that bull.

As for when I post ... sometimes I do live post, other times, it's a 404 post because I fancy the number 4. Best number, ever!

As for days, I just did the math and today makes 551 days in a row. Having said that, bloggig comes very easy to me, I'm here for the fun, and usually keep my posts short.

Also, I don't worry about hits or comments. If you want to visit me, you'll find me in your feed or blogroll, when it best suits you to do so.

And now ... it's time to bake. Enjoy your day and boogie boogie.

I have not seen Minions, though I'd like to. The kiddo had a chance to see it with friends. She didn't seem to care one way or another about it, simply thought it a funny movie.

I'll probably rent Minions when it comes out on DVD. It looked cute enough for that. Of course, soon it won't matter because I will have no choice but to wait because Meijers bought the land our local theater is on and is tearing it down next month. Might have to go to Canada to see Star Wars when it comes out. =\

I used to post 3 times a week on my blog, but lowered it to 2 and that's been working fine. I post 3 times when there's IWSG or something else on Wednesday.

As far as blogging goes, I think when you start out, you should try for every day. That helps you build followers. Once you're established, two or three times a week is good. (I wish I could still do it daily, but I'm so busy with things in "the real world" that I just don't have time.)

I read advice once that said whatever you do, be consistent about it...so I've always followed that. You always post on Mondays (except IWSG), so your readers know to expect a new post from you on Mondays. I say do what works for you!

Anonymous said...

You've made me curious about the Minions and Sharknado.

I usually post Monday, Wednesday, Friday. If I'm super busy I cut one or two days from that, but I'll keep my Monday post. Some bloggers who used to blog a lot now do it once a month or a few times a year and I miss their presence, and obviously their comments and traffic have dropped.

Cindy said...

It seems the question is...how often should you blog to accomplish what? I would think it depends on ones goals and what type of blog it is. In the end, most likely, the idea is to sell something. Some people make money off advertising on their sites. I know of some authors that only blog once a month or even less than that and have great sales if it's a popular genre. So there is a lot of variation.

How often should I blog?
Well, since I'm now working a full-time job (huzzah) and I still want to maintain some sort of attention to my book (I really want ti done in time for Christmas), I've come up with the following:
Every other day I work on my book.
The other days I work on my blog. This includes reading and commenting (like now) and writing two posts a week.
The posts will be "Captain Caption" on Thursday
and
a longer post (like the one up now about Amazon boobs) which will post on Sunday.
I hope I can keep this up (yes, that is a double entendre-I still have it).

Hope you have a great vacation, Alex! I'm not doing much blogging right now, due to the moving pains. By August we will be in a new place and I should be able to improve my posting time. I'm all about content, but what's happening in my life right now - helping hubs get back to his best - is taking priority. I'm glad Denise Covey is starting WEP up again with Yolanda in August. That should give me more incentive - short fiction is something I can try to squeeze in. . .I think at best, once a week would suit me best as a future goal.

The price of popularity (is something I'm unaware of) seems huge, but awesome too! :)

Have a great break, X

Did you see the end after the end after the end of the minion movie?

Yolanda Renée said...

Not a fan of the minions, or the sharks, but I'm a dull person, so it all makes sense. I blog, currently 3 days a week, but that's because of the flash fiction. I can't resist the challenge.

I only post once a week - not counting the Friday writing links post - because that's all I have time for. anything more and the quality (such as it is) would go down.

My daughter is adamant about NOT seeing Minions. Every advertisement that includes the minions drives her up the wall. :)

Sean McLachlan said...

I generally post once or twice a week, sometimes more. I rarely go a week without posting unless I'm on deadline. Generally I do a Travel Tuesday and a Photo Friday post. Wish I had time to do more. The books have to come first, though!

I'm not a "serious" blogger I guess - I post when I feel like it, which over the summer has been once a month. But my life is brimming with fun right now (enjoying my granddaughter, for instance) and ife is short so...

Took my Mom to see "Max" (and shed a few tears) so looking forward to the silliness of the Minion movie.

Have a great vacation!

I'm down to once a month blog post (the IWSG monthly shindig)- and that allows more time for writing and submissions...
I may return to my once a week blog post some time in the future. Not sure when.
Hope you're enjoying your mountainous vacation!

Gail said...

Daily and miss one now and then. Going to back off a little.

Have a wonderfully relaxing vacation.

I did see Pat branched out to an adult genre. ;) I didn't see 50 shades, that's a lot of cash it brought in.

Mary Aalgaard said...

Enjoy your vacation with your wife. The mountains sound lovely. I think the Minion movie would be fun for a family night flick. I post about once a week, more often during challenges or when I review plays.

Karen Peterson said...

I really want to go to one of those Rifftrax shows some time. They seem like so much fun!

Ugh. I can't STAND the minions. At all. I thought they were kind of cute in the first movie, but by the second, I just wanted them to go away.

Oh, and just fyi: saw a media screening of Ant-Man last night. I really, REALLY enjoyed it!

Anonymous said...

We haven't seen Minions yet. Opted for seeing a cheaper movie last weekend, Home, and it was pretty cute/funny. There's been so much backlash about Minions online though. People saying it's the most sexist kid's movie of the year. And I'm sitting here wondering why I never noticed there are no girl Minions - oh that's right. Because it's a light-hearted cartoon and who cares! :)

I'd love to see the mountains! Have a great vacation!

Any book based on Blue Oyster Cult lyrics is a must-read!

Isn't Sharknado 3 a sign of the apocalypse?

Hi, Alex. I like to post on Mondays, but for the summer I've been posting mainly on Fridays. I prefer Mondays, like you. Though, I like to help authors and promote them whenever they need my blog.

Shannon Lawrence said...

Enjoy your trip to the mountains! I'm going a week after you (different mountains.)

I post twice per week, plus a third time every other week (for the horror book reviews). It works for me since I'm limited on visiting time each week. This seems to be an okay balance for me right now.

Karen Lange said...

I am down to posting once a week now (down from twice). I was concerned that it might be a mistake, but it had gotten to the point where I couldn't keep up. It's working well, and feels more manageable.

Have a great vacation!

Enjoy your vacation!

I usually post Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays, with some Friday and Tuesday posts. I tend to save the more academic, serious posts for Fridays, knowing most of my regular readers probably won't read them but that they'll get picked up by search engines for people doing research on those subjects. I need to work on posting more regularly on my secondary blog, though it's very annoying how a certain person only seems to comment on that blog to challenge my own opinion or contest the meaning of a name.

The Lassie/Chewbacca comment made me snort laugh. I just saw Peter Mayhew signing autographs at Comic Con. Guess it's his last year once the Lassie effect hits.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Shah, it is a challenge to keep up with everyone.

Al, no, we didn't stay for the very end. Will have to catch it on DVD.

Ken, probably a good idea she skips it then.

Sean, I enjoy those two posts of yours.

Karen, cool!

Madilyn, exactly! Who cares?

Larry, it just might be a sign.

Carrie-Anne, smart to post something search engines will find.

Leslie, funny!

Thanks everyone. Having a good time on vacation.

Awesome about Minions, and what wonderful advice about blogging. I really liked the MWF posting schedule, but it's not one I can maintain with any dignity...unless I want to spend all day everyday on the blog. (Chores do have to happen some time, right? And writing.)

Loni Townsend said...

I hope you're have a fantastic time offline in the mountains! Minions looks like a good one for me and the kids, but I'll probably wait until it's out on video so that my son doesn't have to sit still. :)

Avatar and Titanic both deserve to be up there. Enjoyed them both, would watch either again in a heartbeat.

I kind of vary between once/twice a week, Sunday/Monday is fixed, and if I feel like an extra treat - one on Thursday...too much poetry bores everybody, writer and readers :-)

Wish you an awesome vacation!

Cherdo said...

Avatar was a good flick, but I never thought it was as great as most other people did.

I try to post five days a week, M-F. My post is usually scheduled for midnight, but now I'm rethinking that...but then again, it doesn't really matter much to my situation. Come August, I'm thinking about doing three days a week (M-W-F) because I'm tackling a new project.

Look at me! I'm acting like I actually post something useful! I feel so grown up.

I bet Sharknado 2 was tough to joke about! Glad you got to enjoy it again.

Enjoy your vacation! We will miss you!

Remakes of classics and books/graphic novels are the only way for cinema studios to make money these days -- but I'm surprised that half of the top 6 movies for all-time earnings are still out in theaters!

If I only posted, I could do a few times a week, but for me, posting involves blog hopping so, once a week it is.

Have a wonderful vacation. I love the mountains... beach... ocean... heck I love vacations!

Hi Alex,

Before I do something weird like actually doing a blog posting, I thought I'd check y'all out first.

You seem to be in a rather playful mood within your post. You know, I post on my blog whenever the heck I feel like it. Couldn't give a toss about what's the best or worse time to post. Then again, not everybody lives in North America and if I was concerned about such things, I'd take into account time zones and which one I might really be in.

Wishing you and your good wife a great week away in the mountains. Personally, I think you should stay well clear of blogs and the internet! Take it easy and enjoy, Alex.

Alex-- I hope you have a lovely vacation! Thank you for posting the Riff Raff humorous slides. THank you for he pointers abut when to post. I probably need to follow a guideline for consistency. I kinda post when I feel like it, which probably isn't the best thing to do!

Hi Alex,
I wish you and your wife an amazing, relaxing vacation. Have a wonderful time!
I think I'd like to post twice a week on my blog but with so much going on every day I just don't make it...I even just had an unwanted 5 months absence from the blog ;) So I guess I just do it whenever it's possible for me :)
I'll let Keith know that you all miss him. He's even busier than I am at the moment with all that German studying going on :)
Of course you're always welcome for food! We'd love having you and your wife over for dinner! :)
All the best,
Beate

I recently watched Jurassic World and enjoyed it much more than expected. Just how many Jurassic's can there be? I really can't see the attraction in the Minions - it's like they're taking over the world. Nah....don't like that.
REally hope you are both having a great time on holiday (vacation)and you are not reading this until Monday. I tried for years to get my husband to do away with his mobile phone whilst holidaying - I'm still trying. Hopefully there is no reception in the mountains :) Wishing you all the best.

I think movies like Sharknado are fun and the "B-Movie", in it's true form, needs to make a comeback. I think a lot of the SyFy films (though terrible in some aspects) are tapping into this.

Have fun on vacation!

Jeffrey Scott said...

Love the Sharknado 2 humour inserts.
Never saw Despicable Me, so not very familiar with the Minions, though I did see their cereal in the store. Honestly, is there nothing they won't make into a cereal? I want my Sharknado Cereal right now!
As for posting, I post once a week, normally. Now that I'm involved with the BOTB, it's a little bit more than than. Anything more than that, would be too hard for me to maintian because I do try to visit other sites as well.

Jemi Fraser said...

I used to blog twice a week, but life gets in the way, and I mostly blog on Mondays, although that's not perfectly regular either. One of these days, I should probably set an actual schedule :)

Have fun on your vacation!!

OMG, those slides are hilarious! Worth going to the movie to see :) Have the best vacation, Alex!!!

Love those slides and that traffic light. LOL

Blue Grumpster said...

Minions... Well, Alex, believe it or not but your friend Blue fell asleep watching it at our local movie theater. I thought it was too long. The movie is visually stunning but in the end it wasn't original and it tended to drag on. Maybe I was just sleepy.

Denise Covey said...

I hope you don't see my comment while you're on break. Your wife is quite right--stay offline--but I know that's so hard to do.

Love the humourous slides! Made my day. And that blog discussion keeps on keeping on. I don't know how anyone can blog each day and still have a life, although I notice daily bloggers rarely visit other bloggers. Figures. Once a week, with the occasional twice for something special, is enough for me. I think most of us used to blog three days a week, but slow blogging allows for more people to catch your post, although the most are in the first few days.

Thanks, as always, Alex. :-)

My feeling about the minions: the authors wrote a series of exhilarating scenes and then glue them into a plot. The plot was very weak, but the scenes were hilarious! :-)

Minions wS a non-stop laugh fest for me. Pat and Profanity Granny ha, ha, ha!

My son (who is 6) decided the Minions probably need Gru in a movie. So we passed on this one. Have a good trip!

Tyrean Martinson said...

Stay offline for your wife!!! :) Seriously, don't comment back until you come back from vacation. Enjoy! Love! Live! :)

Julie Musil said...

Alex! I hope you and your wife have a wonderful vacation. Btw, my 18 year old son absolutely LOVED Minions. Said there were probably 20 actual words in the movie, but he laughed his head off.

Unknown said...

Ha, that is about what I was expecting for Minions. And have an awesome vacation :)

Nigel G Mitchell said...

Those Rifftrax slides are hilarious. I haven't seen Sharknado 2. I honestly don't see how they can improve on the first one. Good bad movies are hard to do. Good tips on blogging times. Haven't seen Minions, I think they only made it for the merchandising. Everyone knows the minions are half of what makes the Despicable Me movies great.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Hey everyone! Still on vacation, but will catch up with those I missed this week on Sunday.

alexia said...

Nah, I have yet to see Sharknado :) Minions I might see when it goes to Netflix. As for blogging, I blog about twice a month. Not ideal, I know, but it is what it is.

Enjoy the mountains!! I DO have big news, so sending you and some of my other writing friends an email. But no need to worry about it on vacay :)

Patsy said...

The extreme success of 50 shades is a little worrying.

No, actually it's quite a lot worrying.

Unknown said...

It's kinda too bad that they couldn't do a bit more with the Minions movie, but I'm still looking forward to seeing it. I can't imagine why Fast 7 has made that much. All those movies are so trailer-park-trash.

I post once a week. If I wasn't running a blog hop, I'd be taking a vacation too. Just too much to do this summer...

Mason T. Matchak said...

Good to know that Minions was decent. I watched Despicable Me with friends for the first time a few days ago, and it left me doubting that the minions could carry an entire movie. I still don't know if I'll see it.

As for blogging, I post once a week, early morning on Wednesday. I seriously don't have enough material to do a blog entry more often - half the time I don't know what I'm going to say until I sit down and write it. >_<

I can't think of a blog updated every weekday that I read even once a week. Obviously I updated daily for years, but worked hard at giving diverse stories and updates to keep things entertaining. Especially now as people opine through their blogs, Twitter feels like such a better space for what used to make easy blog posts.
