Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Plus RiffTrax Live, June Movie Preview, Members of Band Mastodon Die, and New Release From Heather Gardner

Today (Wednesday) I am visiting Lynda Young and discussing why writers need support. Thursday, I am visiting Patricia Stoltey and discussing the best way to market a book. Please stop by and visit both amazing ladies!

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

My awesome co-hosts today are M. Pax, Tracy Jo, Patricia Lynne, Rachna Chhabria, Feather Stone, and Randi Lee!

We are also adding new things to the site. The Publications page now includes conferences, conventions, workshops, festivals, retreats, and seminars, broken down by month. Plus we announced some upcoming stuff, so check it out today.

I’m in a good place now as far as books and writing go. Dragon of the Stars is selling well. There have been many ads in program guides and bookmarks handed out at science fiction conventions. (Next conventions are Space City Comic Con in Texas and Pensacola Comic Con in Florida.) I have guest appearances online through the middle of July. (Monday I visited Rachna’s Scriptorium and discussed the importance of characters.) I might even write a short story about what happens after Dragon ends. (For a very special fan and friend.)

The big news came yesterday from my publisher - CassaFire has been picked up by a publisher in Turkey for Turkish translation into both print and eBook. My book will be available in another language! That is just too wild. Never in my wildest dreams...

Otherwise, I intend to focus more on the IWSG this summer and what I can do to help other writers!

RiffTrax: Live!

And if you want to know more about RiffTrax, check out my interview with Kevin and Bill from earlier this year.

Ninja News

From Entertainment Weekly - Three members of the metal band Mastodon were killed Sunday night – on Game of Thrones! Bill Kelliher, Brent Hinds, and Brann Dailor were all Wildlings, killed and resurrected by the White Walkers. The guys said it was an incredible experience.

Out this week!
Already Home – A Maguire’s Corner Novel by Heather Gardner
Find it at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Goodreads
Congratulations, Heather - you rock!

June Movie Preview

Here are the upcoming theatrical releases for June! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

5 –

Entourage
Movie star Vincent Chase, together with his boys Eric, Turtle, and Johnny, are back - and back in business with super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold on a risky project that will serve as Vince's directorial debut.
Director: Doug Ellin
Stars: Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara, Kevin Dillon
I’ve never watched the show. Good chance I’ll never watch the movie.

12 –

Jurassic World
Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor's interest, which backfires horribly.
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Stars: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Judy Greer
Star Lord battles dinosaurs and a fifty foot tall Rocket – awesome! (And if you didn’t get that, go rent Guardians of the Galaxy this minute!)

19 –

Inside Out
After a girl moves to a new home, her emotions are plunged into chaos as they compete for control of her mind.
Directors: Pete Docter | Ronaldo Del Carmen
Stars: Diane Lane, Rashida Jones, Amy Poehler, Kyle MacLachlan
I want to love Pixar again. I hope this does it.

26 –

Ted 2
Newlywed couple Ted and Tami-Lynn want to have a baby, but in order to qualify to be a parent, Ted will have to prove he's a person in a court of law.
Director: Seth MacFarlane
Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Morgan Freeman
Foul mouthed Teddy bear wants to have baby with a woman – what’s not to love? (Oh wait, this could be in really bad taste…)

Big Game
A young teenager camping in the woods helps rescue the President of the United States when Air Force One is shot down near his campsite.
Director: Jalmari Helander
Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Onni Tommila, Ray Stevenson, Victor Garber
I know it sounds awful! But it’s from the director of Rare Exports, the strangest and most unique Santa Claus film you will ever see.

Going to see RiffTrax? (Go once and you’ll laugh so hard, you’ll never miss another one!) Did you see Mastodon die in Game of Thrones? Picking up Heather’s new book? Any of those movies catch your attention? And what are your writing insecurities today…?

Don’t forget to visit Lynda Young today and Patricia Stoltey on Thursday!

Congratulations on being translated into Turkish. It couldn't happen to a nicer person. Karma at its best.
And huge congratulations to all the other authors with books coming out. And those who are working on others.
Writers rock.

Congrats on getting it translated into Turkish, that's awesome. And yeah, hopefully Pixar is back to form with this one.

Great news about your book. And to think you were unsure about writing another one not too long ago. Inside out looks interesting.

Rhonda Albom said...

Big Congratulations Alex. That is really exciting news. I hope it is even more successful than English. I rejoined the IWSG this month. Some interesting movies coming out. Jurassic World caught my eye.

Rachna Chhabria said...

Wow, CassaFire in Turkish is super duper good news. Congratulations Alex. Really very happy for you. If you remember I had told you that a movie deal too will happen :) Please write some more books.

Inside out and Ted 2 look good.

Congrats on your book. That is great! I'm torn on whether to see Ted 2. Such a stupid movie for the uber hot Mark Wahlberg to be starring in.

Congratulations, Alex! That's great news.

Congrats to Heather, too, for her book! All the best to her.

Congrats on the Turkish translation!

My son is branching out from Star Wars Legos into Jurassic sets, but I don't think he's ready for the movies yet.

P.S. I almost forgot about your comment on my blog. I'd be happy to discuss Broad Universe for IWSG. Do you still have my e-mail? It's ulbrichalmazan@sbcglobal.net.

I just told hubby about Mastadon - he's going to look for them when he watches it again. Yes, he watches it twice when they're as good as it was last week.

Great to hear things are going well with the book sales and tour. Good for you!! And, what's left to do for the IWSG? You already do so much!

Congrats on the Turkish translation! You sound like you have a lot of good things going (and you can handle them, so two thumbs up for you). And that GOT episode was intense!

Christine Rains said...

Happy to hear everything is going well. And congratulations on the Turkish deal! :) That's awesome. More RiffTrax, yay! I just found out that Crow (Trace) is going to be at Gen Con this year and will be doing some puppet shows. I hope to go at least one day to the convention.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Elephant, thank you for your kind words.

Cindy, ironic, isn't it?

Rachna, I'll take that movie deal!

Just, I'll admit I found the first movie funny.

Sandra, the movies are really intense. And I will email you later today!

Hilary, appreciate that.

Elsie, I'm going to have to watch it again to catch them. And we have so much more to do to make the IWSG site awesome.

Christine, I hope you can go! Take photos.

Thanks, everyone!

You are busy as ever. Always a good thing. Congrats on CassaFire! That's awesome!

I'm excited about the new Jurassic Park. Of course, they had me the moment I saw Starlord and the kid from Ironman in it.

Heather M. Gardner said...

Turkish? That's amazing! I'm so glad Dragon is getting out there! Congratulations, Alex!

Thank you for the mention. *blush* I'm just so happy its back out in the world.

I'm so torn on Jurassic World. Sure another dino movie would be fun, but the story? Really? They didn't watch the first 3? Dinos and humans don't mix. We are not on the top of that food chain. DUH! They want to eat us!

I still want to see the Sharnado movies. That would be awesome to see RiffTrax live, but not really within driving distance for me. :(

Have a great day! Thank you for IWSG! It's only getting better!

So exciting about the Turkish translation of Cassa Star! And I'm glad your latest release is selling well. :-)

Jo said...

Wonderful about the Turkish translation. Not a country one would expect to "get into". I'm so glad dragon is doing well and that you are going to write a short story after the ending. There are definitely a couple of loose ends or so.

Not sure I like the sound of most of those movies except maybe helping the downed president.

Jennifer Hawes said...

Congrats to you and to Heather on your books and your translation! I've got the babysitter (aka my oldest teenage boy) lined up for Jurassic World. Can't wait!! The premise for the Big Game sounds really cool. It's all in the execution. Hope it's a great movie.

yay for your sales and translation!!!

i hope the new pixar movie will perk up pixar, too - was big hero 6 the last one? what were they thinking? they need my anti-princess story! and whatever happened to another incredibles? that could be awesome or heartbreaking...

and GOT is WICKED!!!! how cool would it be to be part of it! i've heard lots of famous people want to be extras. it's really straying from the book, but i still love it and he hasn't written any more anyway...

Congratulations on the foreign translation! I suppose these days, it's no longer expected the first foreign version will be in an obvious language like French, Spanish, or German. It's so neat to look at a book in another language, even if we can't understand a word.

OK so I probably will see this film and maybe even in the theatre which deserves to be seen in the theatre. I love Ted so Ted 2 better be in poor taste-it has to be:)

I’m happy for you Alex. I'm so glad you're in a good place with your books and writing. You deserve it. You've worked hard.

Big Game could possibly be so terrible that it's awesome. Rare Exports was definitely worth watching once. Congratulations on being published in Turkish! How cool is that!?

Interesting entertainment info here and Heather's book looks good. That's awesome about the translation.

I've seen Sharknado 2 at a film festival last year. It was VERY similar to the first installment ;-)

Congratulations I look forward to seeing his books also in Spanish!

Truedessa, check with my reviews first before venturing out to the theater again. Next up for me is Jurassic World.

Patricia, yes. Will have to look it up though - unusual name.

Donna, how dare they!

Stephanie, thanks!

Nick, yes it is!!

Helena, definitely see them riff Sharknado 2. And sorry about the smackdown.

Shannon, they say don't take it serious and it's really fun.

That is toooo cool that you'll be in Turkey :-) We're going to see Rifftrax Live here for sure!

congrats on your book's progress to take over the world. Very cool.
As far as new movies - I liked early Entourage the TV show. I may see the movie just to trash my brain. I liked Ted 1. From the previews, this sequel looks too annoying. High hopes for Inside Out. And Chris Pratt could be the new Jurassic man. Hmmm. When shall I get writing done?

Patricia Stoltey said...

Alex, it's such a pleasure to have you visiting my blog today. And congratulations on getting a foreign language edition! That's so cool!

I'm in for viewing Jurassic World for sure. I love those kinds of stories.

Robin said...

Alex, first things first... congratulations! So exciting to have your book published in another language and available to an entirely new set of fans!

Second, I've been sick, which is why I missed the IWSG posting for yesterday. I will be traveling in July and August, my internet will be iffy, so I'm not even going to put the pressure on myself to try and participate in IWSG. I'm undecided about Battle of the Bands. It's a much smaller list of visiting for me, so I might try it. Anyway, I know that on the third strike your name is wiped from the list. I went to the IWSG page to try and remove my link, but couldn't figure it out. If you'd remove me from the IWSG linky list, I'll add myself again when my traveling summer is over (later in August) so that I'll be there for the September post. Thanks so much for your help!

Hey Alex,

Glad to see that Dragon of the Stars is selling well, my esteemed friend. Those Turks are in a delight. I'll contact my partners on Mars and get all your books translated into Martian.

You do well in your support within IWSG aka...never mind....

I still cannot fathom how you get so much done. Send in the clones.

Nicely presented, as per usual, Alex.

Turkish? Can you read Turkish? How will you know it's just not some Turkish erotica with the characters name-swapped?

Stopping by to say hi. So...'Hi' :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Jamie, awesome!

Joanne, he'll be the Jurassic Star Lord!

Thank you again, Patricia!

Robin, if you're sure... I can remove you.

Gary, that would be cool if you could put in a good word for me with the Martians...

CD, I'll just have to trust that my publisher picked someone who wouldn't do that!

I see the previews for "Jurassic World" and wonder why in world people would still visit a park with such a horrible track record for safety. I mean, "It's a Small World" may be annoying, but Chip and Dale don't kill you in the bathroom.
Then, I realize...it's only a movie.
Unlike Star Trek.
Yeah, I'm in my own little world.

Turkish! what a delight!
Seriously good news Ninja Captain, what next? Klingon?
I don't look at your movie list because I live in the weirdest place and we don't get real movies - not ones I want to watch anyway. So...I'll just wait until I'm in the big metropolis of Halifax and see whatever flicks are showing there.

Andrew Leon said...

Will they book you a Turkish book tour?
Maybe some Turkish Delight?

I finished 'Storm and hope to have a review up tomorrow. With the way things have been going, though, I can't say that for sure.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Al, chip and Dale just strip for you, which is about as scary.

Thanks, Al! My books are sold worldwide, but this will be the first translation. Very exciting.

Jan, Klingon would be cool. And sorry you don't get real movies where you live.

Andrew, I'll take Turkish delight as long as it doesn't come from a White Witch. And will I cringe tomorrow?

Oh boy oh boy oh boy---Jurassic World, Chris Pratt training 'raptors! Super-sized T-Rex! I'll be there.

Ted 2? Don't go...you don't want to know.

RiffTrax was so hilarious with perverted Santa Claus, so we must see what they do the 'Nado 2.

Huge congrats on your book getting translated. That's awesome! Just think of how many more people will now be able to read your work, and that could lead to even more translations, which means even more readers...

And since you asked in my blog, I'm doing well in my new home, for the most part. I constantly find myself wishing I'd moved here years ago. ^_^ I'm still looking for a job, but I'm sure I'll find something soon enough.

~Brandy~ said...

Huge congrats on the book success! As for Ted 2 - I can't believe there was enough interest in the first movie for it to warrant a second one! Ridiculous! But that's just my humble opinion.

Congratulations on the Turkish translation, Alex. Great news! I have a friend there now studying the language (advanced) and will ask her to look for your book! About snakes: I was a bit paranoid because a coral snake had bitten me early in May. It was a "dry bite," fortunately, and, trust me, I'm grateful beyond words. The fang marks are a tattoo-like, forever scar.

Congratulations on your books doing well, and the translation to Turkish! I hope your publisher considers an Italian translation as well-- that would rock-- to read you in Italian!!

LOL At your Star Lord reference. I really want to see Jurassic World. I hope it's better than Jurassic Park 3. Why do they never show Lost World on TV?

I really want to see Ted 2. lol

Oh my, in Turkish? That's awesome! Let me know if you need an extra set of proofreading eyes... Sometimes they miss English nuances :-)
There's a bit in Outlander for instance where one character tosses a hat out the window, calling it "that ruddy thing" (he's English). The Turkish translator missed the slang and translated it literally as "that red thing"!

wuhuuu..a lot to choose from...Do you think for the Jurassic World, the book is much better than the movie? I have seen or read them..
