Time for some movie remakes!

From JoBlo -
Deadline reports that the studio has selected Carl Ellsworth to write a new draft of the GREMLINS reboot which is being produced by Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus.

Due out July 24, 2015 is the remake of Poltergeist, staring Jarred Harris and Sam Rockwell.

And they are also remaking Pete’s Dragon and Ben Hur.

That’s right folks – they have run out of ideas in Hollywood!

Familiar with those H movies? Fan of the Red Rocker? (Or his tequila?) Following those awesome bloggers? Found every Mini-Alex yet? And do you think those movies should be remade…?

Loved Hitchhikers Guide, and have all four books in the trilogy. I even loved the television version (which is very rare for my television phobic self.
Remakes are mostly a mistake.

I'm curious, will the K-day of "A to Z challange" tell us what the Kargrandes are? ;)

Heavenly Creatures was pretty disturbing. The Handmaid's Tale was the second Margaret Atwood book I ever read. And Hilary is a wonderful, verbose, supportive blogger.

Happy H Day, Alex :-)

Li said...

I don't find any of those re-makes appealing. There are so many books that would make great movies - how about "Running With Scissors"? Or "Middlesex"? Or the Cassa trilogy by that guy...what's his name... ;)

Laura Clipson said...

I love Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Sandra Ulbrich Almazan said...

I've read both Hitchhiker's Guide and The Handmaid's Tale. One of the details that sticks in my mind from the latter book is how Offred had to use butter to moisturize her hands.

Jennifer Hawes said...

I really enjoy books/movies based on true events!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Elephant, I've seen very few remakes that worked.

Zoltan, I will certainly talk about them!

Annalisa, even more disturbing that it was based on a true story.

Lisa, that would be awesome!

Cathrina Constantine said...

I just heard about Roma Downey & hubby are remaking Ben Hur!!! I hope they don't destroy it. I love the first one with Charlton Heston, a classic.

Christine Rains said...

Wow, Heavy Metal. Haven't thought about that in years! And they're going to remake Gremlins? No. If they really want new ideas for Hollywood, there are a bunch of us overflowing with original ones right here! :)

So good to be back on your blog, Alex. I've been offline and writing the past month-- and have missed all the buzz! All the best with your book, just bought me a copy.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is one of the funniest things I've ever read.

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

I'd consider seeing what they do with Poltergeist - the original terrified me. But I draw the line at Gremlins, just like I did with the Dirty Dancing and Footloose remakes. Ugh.

And I really want to re-read a handful of Atwood's books.

Cherdo said...

The Handmaid's Tale - now there is a great book. I read that one over and over; the whole concept got to me.

Jo said...

Many years ago, in England, I used to listen to Hitchhiker's. Never saw the movie though.

Hilary is one of my favourites. The first two blogs I go to every day, yours and Hilary's.

Dani said...

I really need to watch more movies. Sammy has created some really great music. Hitchhikers Guide will always be a classic. Hilary and Huntress are some really great bloggers. And Hyrath sounds like an intriguing home.

Chrys Fey said...

I've always wanted to read Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. :)

A re-make of Poltergeist interests me. But I had nightmares after the first one. EEK.

thank you so much for the shout out. Love finding new friends and seeing who is who on your blogger bulletin board.

(btw. bought Dragon. Reading. Can't talk. Or type. or...well do just about anything right now)

When I was in college, there was a movie theater on campus that showed movies for free (or cheap?) one night a week. Heavy Metal was one of the movies. That was the first (and only) time I saw the movie. The sad part is, we didn't even drink before going. That was definitely a movie you want to see while under the influence in some way!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Cathrina, it is a classic.

Christine - yeah!

Damy, thank you!

Jeremy, I can't turn it off. Just ignore the robot question.

Madeline, I'm not even going to see the Poltergeist remake.

Jo, appreciate that!

Carol, you're welcome. And thank! Glad it has you engrossed.

I didn't know Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was originally a BBC Radio broadcast. The things you learn blogging! I enjoy Hillary's blog. I've learned a lot of things there, too.

Bish Denham said...

Hitchhiker's Guide is hysterical! I've have The Handmaid's Tale on my to read list for ages. It's time to get with it. And Hilary, love visiting her blog. It's like taking mini-vacations in Britain!

S. L. Hennessy said...

You just gotta love Sammy Hagar and Hitchhikers. I actually met Margaret Atwood in college and listened to her speak about writing Handmaid's. It's one of my most enduring memories as a writer. She's was phenomenal.

Tyrean Martinson said...

Hitch-hiker's Guide rocks! Do you have your babblefish and a towel? :)
And the Handmaid's Tale was deeply disturbing, but I'm not sure I liked it.

As for those remakes - not Pete's Dragon! I like the old one - even if the special affects are silly.

BTW - I read Dragon of the Stars last night. I was sucked in by your awesome character development and universe-building and I just kept reading. I'll try to write a more coherent review later today or tomorrow. Great book, Alex! (Awesome plot twist!)

Stephen Tremp said...

I had Standing Hampton and played it loud and often. A true cult classic!

And only a matter of time before Ben Hur was remade. I heard Hollywood was remaking Birdman, Selma, and American Sniper this year.

Mary Aalgaard said...

It's not that they've run out of ideas in Hollywood, it's that they are afraid of new ones and new artists. Stick to the safe remakes. Bleh.
I bought the Hitchhiker's Guide for my son, the big reader, he devoured it. I need to read it next. Also, on my list is the Handmaid's tail.
You sure are working hard this April!!!

The writing and voice in A Handmaid's Tale is extraordinary. I went to a talk by Margaret Atwood and got a book signed. It was so cool.

Remake Gremlins? Poltergeist? Sacrilege! Will CGIs really make these any better than the original? Whatever. I guess they have run out of ideas, which is a shame. With all the great books out there, you would think they could come up with something.

Suzanne said...

I just love HGTTG! Teaching the other day one of my students asked me a question - the answer was 42, so instead I said 'it's the answer to ....' and she didn't have a clue what I was talking about! I felt old LOL! x

Carrie-Anne said...

There are already three versions of Ben-Hur, my favorite being the 1925 version with Ramón Novarro. Why must there suddenly be a fourth? I remember seeing Gremlins at the Cape Cod drive-in with my parents when I was four years old, and can't imagine that one being remade either. Although I might be interested in a remake if they were from the POV of a minor character in one of those films, not the same exact story with different actors and costumes.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Often the movies have so much better CGI that they look prettier but that doesn't mean the remakes are better. Great picks on books for H. Didn't watch either of those movies.

I didn't get around to reading Hitchhiker's Guide till a few years ago. Loved all the books in the series!

J.H. Moncrieff said...

I've met one of the real women who was portrayed in Heavenly Creatures. She's a famous writer now, and always attends the conference I go to.

Handmaid's Tale is a pretty disturbing book. :) As for the remakes, Poltergeist could probably benefit from new effects, but with so many writers out there, I wish studios would take more chances on the new.

Remaking Ben Hur? Are they crazy? Some things should be left alone. Of course there was a version before the Charlton Heston one so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Jenn, now you know!

Lauren, that's really cool.

Tyrean, wow!! Thank you. That just made my day.

Stephen, they are wasting no time with those remakes.

Thanks, Catherine!

Charles, that one is due for a remake.

Pat - yes!

Tamara, that's cool. The special effects are still good in those films.

Suzanne, you need to have your class read that book.

Thanks again, Samantha!

Roland, very sad.

JH, that's freaky.

Stephen, true...
