Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Plus March Movie Preview, Chef Movie Review, Mini-Alex, and Ninja News

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

My awesome co-hosts today are Chemist Ken, Suzanne Sapseed, and Shannon Lawrence!

It’s about a month away from my book’s release date, so what am I NOT insecure about?

I’ve been working hard on the guest posts for my tour and I’ve completed all of them through May.

Set up a Thunderclap campaign. Hopefully it’s approved and I can announce it on Monday.

The website for my book - What Are the Kargrandes? is up and running with new clues every Monday.

My publisher has the eBook on pre-order at several sites:
Amazon
Barnes and Noble
Kobo
Indigo
Amazon UK

They are running a special promotion on CassaStorm the week prior to Dragon’s release.

They are also sending out promotional materials, books, and ads to a half dozen science fiction conventions taking place this spring.

The book is on Goodreads
And it’s also on several Goodreads lists: Most Anticipated Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Novels of 2015, Can’t Wait SciFi-Fantasy of 2015, and Excellent Space Opera. (Yes, I’m still groveling for votes!)

I don’t have a release day blitz planned outside of the Thunderclap, but if anyone is willing to help spread the news, let me know.

Yeah, it’s a lot. My insecurity? Will it be enough…?

And I need IWSG co-hosts for April and May! For April, it would be best if you were not doing the Challenge. (As IWSG and Day One of the Challenge are one and the same.) Please leave a comment if you can help either month.

Movie Review

Chef
Directed by and starring Jon Favreau, the director behind Iron Man.
I’d heard a lot of good things about this film and finally watched it on NetFlix.
Favreau is renowned chef Carl Casper, working at a posh restaurant serving ‘popular’ dishes. His world is turned upside down when the biggest food blog critique pays a visit and rips the food.
This is an amazing feel-good movie! The characters and their relationships are the focal point. There are many touching moments, especially between Casper and his son. As a divorced dad, he’s not quite sure what constitutes quality time, but he learns along the way.
It’s also hilarious, especially when Casper’s world begins to spiral. He’s trying to do the right thing, but he makes a lot of mistakes. (His son sets up a Twitter account for him, and let’s just say that doesn’t go well at first.)
Rounding out the excellent cast is John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Oliver Platt, Dustin Hoffman, and Robert Downey Jr. in a priceless role.
It’s about food, family, friendships, and one fun road trip.
Highly recommended!

Ninja News

Mary at Play off the Page posted that KUMD, Duluth Public Radio, is currently welcoming women authors to read their work on the air. See her site for details.

The A to Z Challenge starts in less than a month! If you haven’t signed up, please join us for the biggest blogging event of the year.

And finally, Mini-Alex would like to report that he’s not too fond of snow and ice…
Although he still rocks in any climate!

March Movie Preview

Here are the upcoming theatrical releases for March! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

Director: Neill Blomkamp

Apparently, the future looks very bleak to Blomkamp…

Director: Kenneth Branagh
Stars: Lily James, Hayley Atwell, Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Madden
I’ll wait for the animated version of the live action version of the animated film…

20 –

Do You Believe?
A dozen different souls-all moving in different directions, all longing for something more. As their lives unexpectedly intersect, they each are about to discover there is power in the Cross of Christ ... This stirring new film from the creators of God's Not Dead arrives in theaters Spring of 2015. More than a movie, it's a question we all must answer in our lifetimes: DO YOU BELIEVE?
Director: Jonathan M. Gunn
Stars: Ted McGinley, Mira Sorvino, Andrea Logan White, Lee Majors
Do I believe? YUP!

27 –

Home
When Oh, a loveable misfit from another planet, lands on Earth and finds himself on the run from his own people, he forms an unlikely friendship with an adventurous girl named Tip who is on a quest of her own. Through a series of comic adventures with Tip, Oh comes to understand that being different and making mistakes is all part of being human. And while he changes her planet and she changes his world, they discover the true meaning of the word HOME.
Director: Tim Johnson
Stars: Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin, Jennifer Lopez
But I already knew Sheldon was an alien…

Anyone else stressing with similar insecurities? Seen the movie Chef? As frozen as Mini-Alex? Can you help co-host the IWSG? And what movies catch your interest this month…?

And the Thunderclap campaign just went live! If you can participate and help me, please sign up HERE.

Hey, I might be first this month, unless I type too slow. As for your insecurity, you sure are faking it well, each week we read your clues and the rest of us know it will be amazing.
BTW - mini Alex can come and visit us in New Zealand, where its just early autumn, no snow or cold. It's going to be 27c tomorrow.

That's wonderful Alex. You're well on the way having worked out all the necessaries for the release.
Chef with Hoffman and Downey Jr should be great.

I'm amazed to hear you got pre-order. Most vendors won't allow small publishers to do that. I think you're doing great with the organizing and I bet things will go off very smoothly in April!

The "Chef" movie sounds good. I hope I get to see it.

I love Mini-Alex rockin' out in the snow!

Chappie sounds fun. Thanks for the movie updates. Have a great week!

Unknown said...

Wow! You are one busy man, tied up with your new release and the A-Z Challenge. I hope it all goes well for you.

I saw the shorts for the Chappie movie and looks pretty good.

Hi Alex,

As you know my blogging history at present has been a bit hit and miss and I have missed the details regarding Thunderclap. Sorry.

Would you mind sending me the details, because I would very much like to help with the promotion of your new release.

I hope it is not too late.

I still owe you interview questions. I'll try to get them to you by this weekend. And your book is awesome, so I'm sure it will do well.

Li said...

Yes, I saw Chef and I loved it. I know some of my friends thought it was a bore (no explosions! no blood! No supernatural beings!) but sometimes I just want to relax and watch a movie about realistic people living their somewhat messy lives...and succeeding.

RDJ was a surprise and a treat.

My neighborhood is currently encased in about an inch of ice this morning, with 8 inches or more of snow predicted tonight. I agree with mini-Alex, enough winter already!!!

Good luck with your book launch, happy to tweet and promote.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it's possible for you to be any more ready for your big release day. You've got it all covered!

I saw Chef and loved it. I rented St. Vincent the other day and was pleasantly surprised. Murray and McCarthy are both fantastic in it.

I can co-host in May - just let me know kinda early.

Be well, Alex!!

Sarah Foster said...

Hope everything goes well with the upcoming release! It certainly seems like you're prepared.
I've been meaning to watch Chef ever since it was added to Netflix. I'll have to check it out soon.

Liza said...

I loved Chef too! Mini Alex rocks in his winter outfit.

Cathrina Constantine said...

Sounds like you have all your ducks in a row for your release of Dragon of the Stars. Don't fret it'll be a hit! Wishing you much success!

I just watched the movie Chef on my birthday, and totally enjoyed it!! It was a nice ending to a good day!

Tonja said...

How many books have you published since this little club started? I feel like a slacker by comparison . . . I mean, congratulations! :)

Vanessa Morgan said...

So exciting that you're new book will be out. Know that you're always welcome to guest post on my blog as well. What is a Thunderclap campaign? I'll have to Google that.

Karen Jones Gowen said...

It's exciting about your new book, Alex. This one isn't part of the CassaStorm series, is it? I look forward to learning more about it during your blog tour. Chef sounds like a good movie, just the kind my food-lovin' husband and I enjoy. I'll check and see if it's on our NEtflix. We get a different offering in Guatemala than in the U.S.

Jo said...

Poor Mini Alex, I imagine big Alex isn't faring that much better in the snow and ice. You should move south, oh, you already are south.

Some of those film releases sound like other films of the past and do we really need yet another version of Cinderella.

Melissa said...

I'll promo for you.
I'll also co-host IWSG for May.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

I'm with Mini-Alex!

Cinderella is an actress from Downtown Abbey. This startles me whenever I see a commercial.

Excited your book is now on pre-order!

Christine Rains said...

New release jitters. Oh yeah, I know that feeling! Your book is fantastic. I will happily help promote it, and post the info plus my review on my blog. :) I feel the same way as Mini-Alex! Yup, Sheldon is an alien. Totally. ;)

Donna K. Weaver said...

Done some voting on Goodreads. :)

Love your snarky movie comments.

Nick Wilford said...

Your campaign is massive and I'm sure it will pay off. Of course I'll help with the release!

Yep, Home sounds pretty similar to Sheldon's role in Big Bang Theory to me!

Unknown said...

Sounds like you've got a lot going on Alex! I'd be happy to help co-host in May.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Rhonda, thanks - glad you know!

Hank, check it out - you'll enjoy the film.

Lexa, this is the first time any of my books have been on pre-order.

Hey Carolyn! Thanks. As soon as I have them, I will. It's still pending.

Natalie, appreciate that!

Lisa, it doesn't have to be all Blood, Boobs, and Carnage.

Elsie, thanks!

Tonja, you are no slacker.

Thanks, Vanessa!

Karen, it is separate from the Cassa universe.

Jo, yeah, I thought I was in the South!

Melissa, thanks!

Christine, appreciate that!

Donna, thanks!

Melanie, May it is!

Well, you wouldn't be much of a Ninja Captain if there wasn't, would you?

On a side note, I am really looking forward to Chappie, so much so that I might just go and see it when it comes out in the cinemas next week.

I think if you do anymore, you'll hurt yourself.

Chef sounds cute. Better than the movies coming out this month, although I'm sure we'll see Do You Believe when it hits video.

Yay, Mini Alex! I'm sure you're getting the jitters, but hold on! Congrats on your book.

I love your comment on the Cinderella movie. haha The only reason I'd go see it is for The King in the North, Richard Madden. ^-^

Book number four! You know it will do well. You've got lots and lots of fans. Still, I know how nerve-wracking it must be getting another book release coordinated. Well, I don't really, but I can sympathize. :)

Hi, Alex,

Looks like you keeping your CLONES very busy! Congrats on accomplishing so much before your release!

I know it will be AMAZING!!!!!!!!

LOVED CHEF!!! Saw it ages ago. I really enjoyed the chemistry between the characters.

Poor mini Alex does look frozen, BUT DETERMINED....

I can't believe the A-Z is only a month away.... I admire those who are signed up! ALL the best to them. Life is so unpredictable for me right now, so I'll have to pass this year, but...

Julie Flanders said...

Definitely willing to help with any release day blitz you have planned. As well as support your Thunderclap. Just say the word.

LOL I think just about all of us are with mini-Alex at this point.

I've been meaning to watch Chef, looks cool. I'll have to check it out soon.

The Biker Chef and I loved the movie Chef. I wrote a review on my blog under the column, Dine off the Page. Thanks for the shout out! I hope people find ways to share and promote their work wherever they live. I believe, but I don't always like the films about, God, faith, etc. They go too far to the extreme and make us seem like fanatics or Bible thumpers, or worse, judgmental.

Heather M. Gardner said...

Good Morning Alex!

No need for you to be insecure! You are well prepared! You know I'll do anything I can to help.

That Chef movie looks really cute. I do like Mr. Favreau.

Are you saying you have weather? We got more icy mix last night and we are expecting more tonight. Bleh.

If you need me in May, let me know.

The BOY and I want to see the new Home movie!

Tamara Narayan said...

Sounds like you've got things ready for an excellent release. Congrats.

People in my section of the frozen north are sick of the cold. Today will be the first with an above-freezing temp. in several weeks. I wouldn't mind using my dish washer again. Part of the outflow pipe has been frozen for ten days. But I can never get enough snow.

Michael, we'll miss you, but I understand.

Thanks, Julie!

Mary, thanks for posting about the station. And yeah, there has to be a happy balance with the movies somewhere.

Heather, no, it's to be in the 70's today. Go figure.

Tamara, bummer.

EE, thanks!

Murees, thank you.

You're doing a guest post for me, right? I don't see where I held a date for you, so let me know where I'm supposed to put you!!!

When you have paper-based books, you spend the month after release at the post office. I'm SO glad the twice-weekly trips to the post office with stacks of bubble mailers is over. I know my local post office is glad it's over, as well... My next release isn't until at least summer 2016, so I have time to recover...

I can co-host in May, if you still need a co-host. I'll be a basket case as my daughter will be marrying at the end of June, but I think I'll need the distraction! I'll see Chef now. I was wondering and thought it was just another drama with food as the vehicle. The high here today is supposed to be 80! Ha ha! Got Dragon on my Want to Read on Goodreads and I'll partake in the Thunderclap when you let us know the date!

Tyrean Martinson said...

I'm generally stressing about similar insecurities on a regular basis and I haven't even scratched the surface of the amount of marketing that your awesome publisher and you are doing. Way to go with all of that. I think it's going to be a good release!

My kids want to see Cinderella (if nothing else, for the Frozen birthday party clip), and Insurgent (Divergent #2), so I think those will be our theater highlights of the month.
I'm definitely adding Chef to our Netflix list.

Have a great IWSG, Alex!

What you're feeling isn't insecurity, it's called exhaustion. Don't forget to take a breather now and then.

I'm available to help with IWSG for May.

Love the movie Chef. I can watch that a few times more.

And good luck with the preorders. Can people submit reviews in advance, or do they have to wait until the release date?

You have been working extra hard, and that work is going to pay off awesomely. Just you wait. :)

Sorry my post went live before I finished it today. I had a valid reason. It's updated now.

Hey Alex, Congrats on your new release. I have already pre-ordered although I am not up on the Kargrandes, I need to do some research before the book comes out.
Would love to help spread the word. Let me know what you need.
I have a release on April 6th and have all the same insecurities as you. I had to go back to my first two releases and do some overhauling because I think I put them out their premature and now I am second guessing everything. But, still happy to write. Nice to know we are all in the same boat. :-)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Stephanie, I don't have a date listed either. May 18 is my next open date.

Lisa, thanks!

Tyrean, the Frozen short looks cute.

Ken, is that what I'm feeling...?

Susan, I also have all my Challenge posts written...

Thanks, Stephen! Reviews aren't allowed until release date, but you can post them as a forum discussion like Edi did.

David, just caught it.

Pat Hatt said...

Wow, i never knew Chef had so many big names in it. What? You won't wait for the live action, cgi mashup version of Cinderella? That's the best of both worlds.

Awesome the release is coming along.

stephen Hayes said...

You must be an exceptionally organized person. I envy that. I liked "Chef," but it didn't seem to fit a big movie format, more like a made-for-TV movie.

That's what I'm working on: getting well ahead. Good luck with your book.

Do You Believe? sounds like an interesting film. Since I love world religions, I've always enjoyed reading books and watching documentaries about people who experienced religious conversion or became religious after growing up secular or nothing.

Chef sounds really cute - I will have to check that out.

Liz A. said...

Good luck with the release. I'm sure it'll do well. And Chef sounds like something I might like.

Ooh, I'm hopping over to check out your new website. Been wondering what all this is about. Excited to discover! Congrats, again.

Yea, scary 0-0 but you can do it. Hang in there Ninja Captain.

Suzanne Furness said...

I think you seem super organised Alex, well done. I hope it goes really well for you. I will certainly mention on my blog when the release day arrives!

If you need any other helpers for April I could step forward.

SpacerGuy said...

Great, You'll have to remind me again about your new book's exact release date. I want to catch all these special deals you've got going. Hehe, Its fun seeing blogstar brands like these. I think minialex is onto a good thing with this rockstar image of his and he knows it!

farawayeyes said...

I get your insecurity, but I do have to say that it's one I would love to have. Kind of like winning the lottery, 'let me see what I can do with that'.

The movie 'Chef' sounds interesting. Thanks.

March movie previews -

'Do You Believe' - You bet I do, but I do not believe Hollyweird will do the subject justice. Just look the mess they made of two great Bible in this past year.

'Cinderella' - Looks like a rip-off of 'Everafter', which is the live Cinderella that I really like.

'Chappie' - saw the previews and it looks kind of depressing.

Cherie Colyer said...

Well, I'm more insecure about my upcoming release now that I see all the things not yet available for my book that releases next month. I have a to-do list for this week.

Sounds like you have everything nice and organized for your upcoming release. I'm off to join the Thunderclap.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thanks, Annalisa!

Laura, you rock!

Kimberly, that's awesome.

Suzanne, thank yoU!

Spacerguy, he's a cocky little guy.

Yes it will suffice Alex, will be a success!

Donna McDine said...

Sounds like your book marketing is a movin' and a groovin' good for you! Wishing you all the best! Love mini-Alex...I can't get enough!

J E Oneil said...

None of those movies seem like my thing, though I might give Chappie a watch. Good luck with your pre-release insecurities. I think you'll do great :)

DL Hammons said...

I'm going to see Chappie this weekend...and now I'm going to watch CHEF as well based on your review! :)

Kristin Smith said...

Wow, you are going to be crazy busy the next couple of months. Good luck with all the promoting—I think you are well on your way to a successful book release! So exciting!

I had to laugh at your snarky comment about the Cinderella movie. Ha! :)

Toi Thomas said...

Chef sounds like a good movie, plus I like Favreau.
I like your plans for the thunderclap and would be willing to post something on my blog if you decide to do a blitz.
Mini-Alex doesn't seem like he's letting the snow bother him much. He's still rock'n.
I might be able to host in April or May. Wednesdays aren't usually good for me, I bearely manage to post each month, but I have an online training day coming up and I get to pick it.

Helena said...

Sigh. I really do have to give up my Luddite ways. I was going to happily help out with your Thunderclap until I discovered that it means having a Facebook account (I don't), a Tumblr one (don't), and a Twitter (have one, never used it, can't find my password).

However, Alex my dear, I'll gladly give you a shout out on my blog in your release week, I'm ordering a copy for myself, of course, and I'll gladly do whatever I can (like join social media?) to sing your books' praises.

Sandra Cox said...

A month away....that's exciting. Sounds like your publisher is really working hard to get the word out there. That's great!

Gwen Gardner said...

I did see Chef! On the plane on my vacation in November. The focus on relationships and doing what you love was heartwarming. It was really good.

I'm sure your new book is awesome! Don't worry.

Sheena-kay Graham said...

Chappie is here in Jamaica so I will see it soon. Cinderella and Home are must sees for me. Last night I got to see Kingsdman and it blew my soul. % stars! 50 stars! Good luck with Thunderclap, thanks for hosting IWSG my friend, best of luck with votes and...I love you. *Hugs*

I'll help spread the word about your shiny new book. Supported your thunderclap too. Good luck. (I'd say if you were on FB there's a group for it, but you're not.)

Mark Means said...

Haha, you should have ZERO insecurities, Mr. Cavanaugh :P Best of luck with your new book and I hope the launch goes well!

I've seen "Chef" on Netflix, but never thought much of it. After reading your take on it, I might have to give it a watch.

Best of luck with everything....you deserve it.

Faraway, it's done by a Christian studio though, the same one that did God's Not Dead, Fireproof, and others.

Cherie, sorry about that!

DL, you will enjoy it.

Kristin, I am here for your amusement.

Helena, thank you so much!!

Sheena-kay, I still want to see Kingsman.

Thanks, Patricia!

Some of those movies look good! But I'm not too sure about Chappie. I think I might pass on that one.

J.H. Moncrieff said...

I can totally relate, Alex. My first book comes out in May, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

But you've built such a strong following! You're going to kick some serious ass!

Good luck. :)

I need to promote the fact that my biography of Lewis Carroll is now out on Kindle. It originally came out in 2010 and did well. But my publisher hasn't promoted the e-book in the US at all as far as I know. Grr! I have the rights back in the UK and I've put it on Kindle myself. I should start looking at your site to get ideas how to promote it. I'm not good at this kind of thing. - Jenny Woolf.

Jenny Woolf said...

Hmmm but I will look into Thunderclap....

Patsy said...

Book releases and the marketing involved are enough to make anyone feel insecure. Hope it all goes really well.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Jay, I will let you know.

Krista, join us! And Chappie is getting really crap reviews.

Donna, big thank you!

Thanks, TBM.

Jenny, be sure to check out the IWSG site - lots of tips there.

Yes, hopefully in Chappie they were wrong about the future.

I'm all admiration here. Alex, you've got so many pans in the fire and nothing seems to be burning. How do you do this????

Anyway, congrats on the upcoming release (with the pre-orders!). It's fantastic. Really.

I would offer to co-host for you, but I'm really not feeling well. My migraines have been winning these last few months. I don't want to say "Yes" and then not feel able to do it. I hope you find some folks, though!!!!!

Yolanda Renée said...

All signed up for Thunderclap, what a wonderful idea!

I can't believe you have any insecurities, but it always looks greener on the other side of the fence. Remember, have fun!

Seeing Chappie tomorrow.

Alex, your book is going to be wonderful! Reading about the work you've done (aside from the writing) is inspiring and just gives me all the confidence in the world that you will thrive.

Thanks and best wishes!

Alex, my friend. You are an amazing writer, and I'm excited about your upcoming new release. You have made me like science fiction, the way YOU write it. And you are awesome with cheering other writers on. Thanks for stopping by and encouraging me to write a second memoir.

John Wiswell said...

After how fun District 9 was, it's been disappointing to see him fail to balance his politics and love of action movies. I don't think it's wrong for him to write about those topics, just he hasn't figured out how to make the blend work from film to film yet.

I enjoyed the movie Chef very much. We have Chappie and Home on our" can't wait list". But, we have to wait...until it shows up on dvd. We are loving the spring like weather here. We have had some strange high temps here in the state with "the greatest snow on earth"I think mini Alex could really rock in our warm temps. :-) Hugs! P.S. I think you are great at masking your insecurities my friend. Never would have thought you felt insecure, you exude confidence to me.
