Insecure Writer’s Support Group, plus Dragon of the Stars Cover, November Movie Preview, Dragon and Ninja, and Ninja News!

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

My awesome co-hosts today are LG Keltner, Donna Hole, Lisa Buie-Collard and SL Hennessy! Be sure to thank them for their efforts.

We are a month away from the release of the IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond. So much effort has gone into this book, and I’m proud of the IWSG Admins for their efforts. And I’m very proud of the contributors – the book is packed with awesome information and tips!

I’m not insecure about that book.

However, I am nervous about the next step in my personal author journey.

April 7, 2015 is the official release date for my next (and last) book, Dragon of the Stars. (Yes, right in the middle of the A to Z Challenge. I may have a meltdown that month.)

However, I am not nervous about the cover art, which I finally got to see Monday afternoon:

One more time – can I do it?

My Dear Dragon Friend

The Dragon and Ninja, created by the amazing and talented Father Dragon Al, arrived last week.

Thank you, Al. You are one of the best friends I’ve ever had and an amazing person.

Ninja News

Leandra Wallace and many others have started an awesome new blog. Across the Board is a group blog featuring writers from all different genres, kidlit to adult, posting on Mondays and Thursdays. They love to have visitors stop by!

The Realms Faire is coming next week! And guess what – I am one of the jousting Knights. My joust is Monday and you can cheer for me then and throughout the week. Tons of prizes, from books to gift cards. Don’t miss it!

November Movie Preview

Here are the upcoming theatrical releases for November! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

7 –

Interstellar
A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.
Director: Christopher Nolan
Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Foy
Nolan is an amazing director – feels like I’ve been waiting years for this one.

Big Hero 6
The special bond that develops between plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax, and prodigy Hiro Hamada, who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.
Directors: Don Hall | Chris Williams
Stars: Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, Jamie Chung, T.J. Miller
Marvel’s foray into kid friendly heroes – and the previews are pretty darn funny.

21 –

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
Katniss Everdeen is in District 13 after she shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.
Director: Francis Lawrence
Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson
I’m looking forward to part ten where Katniss is eligible for social security benefits…

Extraterrestrial
A group of friends on a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods find themselves terrorized by alien visitors.
Director: Colin Minihan
Stars: Brittany Allen, Freddie Stroma, Melanie Papalia, Jesse Moss
Part horror, part science fiction, all probing!

28 –

Penguins of Madagascar
Super spy teams aren't born...they're hatched. Discover the secrets of the greatest and most hilarious covert birds in the global espionage biz: Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private. These elitists of the elite are joining forces with a chic undercover organization, The North Wind. Together, they must stop the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine, from destroying the world as we know it.
Directors: Eric Darnell | Simon J. Smith
Stars: Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Christopher Knights, Benedict Cumberbatch
Ninety-nine percent sure my wife will drag me to this one…

The Babadook
A single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son's fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.
Director: Jennifer Kent
Stars: Essie Davis, Daniel Henshall, Tim Purcell, Tiffany Lyndall-Knight
Heard great things about this film, but doubt it will be playing anywhere in the Carolinas. (Thus I will be dragged to see Penguin movie above.)

What are your writing insecurities today? Picking up some new books? What do you think of Mini-Alex’s new friends? What movie catches your eye this month? Think I can survive another book release? And what do you think of the cover art…?

That cover is awesome. Love the Dragon Ship design. AL did a great job on the Ninja Rivals :)

I'm hoping to get to see Interstellar at the movies. Badadock looks intriguing too.

Congrats to all the authors with book releases. Whoop whoop.

J.L. Campbell said...

Congrats to those with new releases.

Impressive artwork on your cover, Alex. You're super-organized, so I know you won't be too stressed.

Thanks to your co-hosts and have a wonderful IWSG day.

Of course you can, Alex. I'm sure when you started this whole writing venture you asked yourself that same question, and here you are, with a trilogy under your belt.

TBM said...

Dude I love the cover! I read a science fiction novel the other day and I was so disappointed in the cover since this is the genre were the cover should really catch the eye and yours does!

Al Diaz said...

I am goin to see pinguins. Yeah for your wife.
You'll need twice as much help in April than last year. Dwarves saw clones bargaining for hiding places during April.
Spectacular cover. All I'm saying.
You welcome.

Christine Rains said...

Wow. Such a gorgeous cover! You definitely can survive another book release. You're the Ninja Captain for a reason! Congrats to everyone releasing a book this week. My son wants to see Big Hero 6, so we'll see if he can sit through a whole movie at the theatre. I've not heard of The Babadook but that simple poster has me intrigued.

Jackie said...

Cool cover, Alex! A book release during A-Z Challenge is challenging itself, but you've got this!

Rhonda, thanks for the idea!

Melanie, that's true.

TBM, thanks! And yes, a science fiction cover should rock.

Al, if the clones go on strike, I quit.

Thanks guys!

That is one awesome cover, Alex - has a very prog rock guitar look to it. Unintentional, perhaps, but I think it suits you very well. :)

Jo said...

Love that cover, absolutely superb.

More on Hunger Games??? Thought that story was finished.

I would drag you to see the penguins too. Only way I would get to see it I guess.

Leandra Wallace said...

Awesome cover! It really looks like a ship-like dragon flying through space. Congrats! And Mockingjay! Out of all those, that will probably be the only one I see in theaters. Though Big Hero 6 looks like a lot of fun. And lastly- thanks so much for the mention!!! You rock. =)

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

You so can do it, Alex! Great cover!

Made a note of The Babadook - sounds creepy! Saw Deliver Us from Evil - it was okay. Also saw The Fault in Our Stars - lost count of how many tissues I used. The acting was amazing! I even liked it better than the book. :)

There have been a few times where I have felt like joining the IWSG but then again I really don't consider myself a writer, nor do I have any aspirations to publishing any kind of book.

I hate deadlines. The pressure to have something completed by a specific date really interferes with my writing. So I just stick to my non-schedule and post what I want, when I want. Blogging or writing anything interferes with my family time so I never bite more than I can chew.

Cover Reveal: Your covers are awesome. I'd hold on to your cover artist with a kung-fu grip!

Interstellar: Huge Chris Nolan fan. I loved the Dark Knight series and Inception. The previews for Interstellar are intense. We have no school on Friday this week due to teacher conferences, so the Hubster is taking the day off so we can all watch the first showing. That's how much we love his films.

Crystal Collier said...

Every book release is like that, right? Once you know what you're jumping into, you question if you're sane enough to do it again? I'm wishing you all the best, Alex. Your release is going to be awesome.

Huge contrats to Catherine, Pat, MJ and Milo! (I had no idea Pat was branching into YA...or is it MG? Guess I better go find out.)

As a sci-fi fan first, I can tell you I would at the very least want to see what Dragon of the stars was about if I was at the book store browsing through books. I really dig that cover. It's an eye catcher.

Love the cover! It's perfect. Love the Dragon and Ninja, too. Good luck with the book release! I'm looking forward to the IWSG Guide. Congrats to all the new releases! The kids want to see Big Hero 6. Don't know if we'll make any of the others. Thanks for hosting IWSG!

Cherie Reich said...

Love, love, love your new cover, Alex! It goes great with your Cassa ones too, even through it's not set in that world.

I'm hoping Interstellar is really good. I've been so impressed with what Nolan did for the Dark Knight series and Inception. Big Hero 6 looks so cute, and I will be seeing Mockingjay Part I and had to laugh at your snarky comment. :)

Anonymous said...

Your cover rocks, Alex. But, why do you say it's your last book. Do you mean, like, ever????

The piece Father Dragon created is adorable. I mean tough. Manly. hehehe

I'm tempted to go see Big Hero 6. It looks so cute and funny. I haven't been to the movies in a long while and this movie looks like it'd be worth the money.

Have a great week, Alex! Thanks for the IWSG!!

Awesome cover! Love the fiery bursts of electricity!

Also, I have to say, your review of Hunger Games made me laugh out loud. It's like one of those high school sitcoms that lasts forever, so at one point you have a 30 year old man playing a high school sophomore.

How do you do, fellow kids?

Insecure- about meeting deadline for writing.

I want to see the new Minion movie and maby Hero 6- who *giggles* looks like the Michellen man...

You have a great cover- I love how you have Dragon in the title and the ship on it kind of has a dragony look and feel to it. :)

ilima said...

The cover is gorgeous. I'm so curious to see if you really will stop after this one. My guess is not for long...

Already have my Interstellar tickets. I can't wait!

And this is the first time I'm skipping out on my iwsg post because I don't have time. Ugh. Once these revisions are turned in I can get my life back. Hopefully.

Love that cover art!!!

And I'll probably be seeing Big Hero and Mockingjay, Part 1 in the theaters. I actually like the Hunger Games books - although the end of the 3rd needed just one more chapter but not a 4th movie.

And, many thanks for your thoughts and comments on my blog today!!!

Did you see the Minions trailer? So darn cute!

I'm looking forward to Interstellar! Hmm...and I guess even Big Hero 6, looks cute and funny :)

Hi Alex! I marked the release date for Dragons... on my calendar. I think your cover is great. all of your covers have been, but I think I like this last one the best.

I am anxiously awaiting "Interstellar." That's no surprise, but my husband is also anxiously awaiting it! Wow! I usually have to drag him to sci fi and fantasy movies! Cool dragon and ninja artwork!

My writing insecurities today: historical research, especially in old Canadian newspapers ~ just how to go about it efficiently and cost effectively. Oh yeah ~ I'm not having much luck with Canadian Parliamentary records either. I did get some great help, especially last night, from an O.M.I. Bishop in Northern Canada. Wow! Last night was the first time I truly thought: This book is going to happen! I'm gonna figure it out.

Have a happy Wednesday!

It seems that no matter how many books or stories an author writes, nor how succesful they are, there are still insecurities to be faced. Will this one be a flop? Will they be able to write another?

I suppose that's partly because each new project is different. A seperate challenge. But then that's part of what makes it fun too.

Yikes on the release date, though. Y'know, you COULD opt out of A-Z this year. Just sayin... no? Then make it all about the release. Combine the stuff you'd do for it anyway (guest blogs, blog tours, etc) with A-Z. One job instead of two!

Congrats on being a knight. I'm taking part next week as well Alex. The cover art for your 'last' book is mind blowing. I love the bright colours and the big ship. Father D. is super talented, indeed. Interstellar, Big 6 and Mockingjay are my must sees this month. Most likely I will also see Penguins movie as well but that's because the trailers (and the penguins to darn it) seduced me. Back in February I was determined not to see it. Two Dreamworks Animated movies was enough. But no, I'm probably going to end up seeing all three. November is going to rock. Have a great day Alex.

Congratulations and I adore the book cover. Looks amazing. April will be here before you know it! Good luck! I am always astounded how many comments you receive on your blog on a daily basis!

Kristin Smith said...

Hey Alex! You're cover is freakin' awesome! I'm loving the greenish sky and the red accent colors.

That's a pretty cool ninja and dragon Father Dragon Al made for you. What a good friend!

Thanks for the laugh about the Hunger Games movie...too funny.

I think Interstellar looks good, mostly because I'm a big fan of Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, plus it has an amazing director...should be a great movie.

Raucous cover and tip-o-the-cap to mini Alex's new friends. The book most captivating me now is my first novel that I completed first markup/edits on two days ago. Currently reading Paradise Not Quite Lost.

Book launch, rocket launch, grenade launch, you'll survive and thrive them all!

Empty Nest Insider said...

Love the cover for your new book! Father Dragon did a beautiful job on his crochet work! Interstellar has been getting a lot of buzz lately. I'm so excited about both of your upcoming books, Alex!

Congrats on such a great cover, Alex - looks very classic sci-fi, though the ship does look a bit like a dragon. Good stuff. ^_^

And since I've already gone on about my insecurities in my own blog, I'll just say that the only movie I'm really interested in this year is the last 'Hobbit' movie - it takes a lot for me to want to go see a movie, there's always stuff I'd rather do.

Julie Musil said...

Alex, that new cover ROCKS! Wow, so cool. I'll help spread the word when it's out in April. No meltdowns allowed. You're the cool one, remember?

Jeff Hargett said...

Feels like forever since I was last able to stop by. Glad to see the dragon/ninja combo! Lovely work by a most talented dragon. Thinking I may have to make time to check out Interstellar. And yes, you can do it one more time!

Shell Flower said...

I love the cover. The ship evokes dragon energy for sure. I'm also excited for Mockingjay. Love the dragon/ninja art, too.

Tammy Theriault said...

Big hero!! I want to see that so bad! Alex, the cover art looks amazing. :)

I love the cover art of your new book Ninja!

Tell me those penguins don't rock! :) Love mini-Alex's new friends and just waiting to hear details about the book release. Consider moi there. Hugs, Eva

Trisha said...

Loooove your cover art - only just now seeing it for the first time. :) And of course you can do it! You've done it three times before and succeeded. What's one more? :)

Helena said...

A fantastic cover for what will no doubt be a great read I'll enjoy. Congratulations! And heck yes, you can do it just great one more time.

I'm looking forward to a couple of these movies too. BTW, if you didn't catch it, the New York Times Magazine had a long profile of Christopher Nolan and how Interstellar was conceived.

Michelle Wallace said...

I LOVE your new cover! It's gorgeous!
Can't wait for the IWSG book too!

And love seeing Mini-Alex and Father D side-by-side...getting acquainted...
...and who can resist those penguins? They are cute!

That is an awesome cover, Alex!

I lpve your cover art. It really pulls you in. Plus, i have faith. Not only will you survive this book launch, it will be your best one ever.
I hadn't heard of Babadook, but it seems creepy and intriguing. I won't actually mind seeing Big Hero 6.
As for my insecurities, I will be starting my own book marketing and launch soon.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Alex - love the new cover .. before Father Dragon Al .. brilliant creation -and how lovely he's flown it over to you!!

Excellent coverand bet it delivers once cracked open too! Sorry I'm late with my insecure post but just started shift work and my inner clock is kablooey! As to my own insecurity, I continue to fight it. Sometimes I'm ahead, sometimes it is winning. Importantly, I do not say uncle!

Julie, I'll try to remember that.

Jeff, Al is talented!

Trisha, you're right.

Helena, I'll have to read that.

Love the cover, Alex.

Missed the IWSG post yesterday - life finally caught up with me... only just realising what day it is. Slapped wrist and no supper.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Wow, the release is right in the middle of A-Z? Somehow I missed that. You'll do fantastic, as you always do! It'll just be busy. :)

That Interstellar looks really interesting...

Sci-fi movies are def on the rise. So cool to see it happening!!
I love your cover, Alex. Very striking with that pinkish hue bleeding into the darker colors.
Big congrats!!

Roland D. Yeomans said...

Of course you can do it. Perhaps do a A TO Z based on your book?

Like PK, I love your cover and its color scheme.

I forgot that today was IWSG, but as it turns out, the topic of my post fit so I altered the title and left a link to IWSG at the top. :-)

Beverly Stowe McClure said...

Congratulations on the book. An exciting but nervous time. You'll do great. The cover is awesome.

Love the little Ninja

Hi Alex, Thanks so much for including my book in your post. I see I'm in some very good company - such a wonderful list of authors here. Insecurities...oh, where to begin, as my kitchen floor gets fixed and I work on the patio for the rest of the week. At least the weather is agreeable - fall through spring are perfect temps in AZ.

Sherry Ellis said...

That is so cool how the spaceship looks like a dragon! I bet even Father Dragon is impressed! (Very cool little ninja from him, too!)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Roland, no worries!

Roland, that was suggested and I just might do it. And cool!

MJ, you're welcome.

Sherry, yes he was!

Leovi said...

Hahaha, this The Dragon and Ninja's wonderful creation, a good gift!

Cynthia said...

Very cool cover art.

I definitely want to see Mockingjay. I wish they didn't have to split up the last book into two movies, but then again, I suppose there's more money to be made this way.

Elizabeth Seckman said...

A book release in the midst of IWSG? You are brave!

Love the cover...so cool!! Al is the best guy. What a gift!

Dixie@dcrelief said...

Cover art for your book is great! I'll be checking in on Pat Hatt's book too. No Babadook in Carolinas - bah-humbug! Guess it'll be a penguin holiday for me as well.
My insecurities involve anything but writing. Then again I'm not a writer - I blog.

Murees Dupè said...

No doubt. Of course you can do it. You are the king of amazing. Awesome cover. That alone should give you tons of confidence. I don't know how the IWSG team can do so much. The team is fantastic. Thanks to you guys for what you do to help us fellow writers. It is absolutely appreciated.

Patricia Stoltey said...

Interstellar is going to be the big film that actually gets me out to a theater. It's on my weekend schedule!

H. R. Sinclair said...

You can so do it! In April though -that will be scary, but the cover is awesome.

Notes Along the Way with Mary Montague Sikes said...

I absolutely love your book cover. Congratulations!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Cynthia, that's why they do it. Seems to be the trend.

Elizabeth, it wasn't by choice!

Murees, that's great to hear.

Thanks, guys!

I think it's perfect that Dragon of the Stars is being released during A-Z! That seems hugely appropriate! How exciting. :)

Walter Knight said...

Great cover art. Cover art never turns out the way you request, but as with any group effort, it often turns out better.

DMS said...

April will be here before we know it! I am not sure how it is November already. :)

Love to see all the new releases.

Seeing the upcoming movies reminded me that I still need to watch Catching Fire! I am soooo far behind on my movies. Have to catch up.

I somehow did A to Z and my book's release last April. It was tiring.

I love your cover.

Congratulations on the new book cover! I LOVE it!

Wait, why is this going to be your last book? I think you should write more! I think you are particularly gifted.

Sher A. Hart said...

I just love spacy art, and the art of space on your cover. Now I have an insecurity about ever being able to comment on the actual IWSG day. This time my computer power button broke. I finally fixed it with hot glue, so here I am. Yea for your final book even if it's not final!

Optimistic Existentialist said...

I am BEYOND excited to watch Interstellar. I think I shall go this weekend!!

I think your new book cover is awesome; in fact, it might be my fave of all of them. Fits the title perfectly.

SpacerGuy said...

Of course you can. If you need backup just call on the ninja's for inspiration. Fascinating movies and Ninja book launches. I'll be back for seconds!

Theresa Milstein said...

I'm excited about the IWSG book coming out.

Your covers are so distinctive--you've definitely branded yourself.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Walter, I've been fortunate my publisher has created a great cover every time.

Medeia, thanks for the warning.

Avantika, thank you!

Sher, whatever it takes.

Liz, thanks!

Theresa, that's good to know.

Love the cover art Alex! It really draws your eye in. You just have to look at it.

Wow, April is going to be a busy month for you though. I know you've replied in the comments that you have to do the A to Z because you're a co-host, but can you really stretch yourself that thin? You could say you have too much on that year, which is true! But I know you are great at organising yourself. Don't wear yourself out though!

Vanessa Morgan said...

April seems far away, but I'm sure you must be excited for your new book. Congratulations.

That is some smokin' hot artwork. Dayum. Enjoy Interstellar. I plan on seeing it this evening.

Catherine Stine said...

Very cool cover art, Alex! Plus I think the title is really catchy.

Shannon Lawrence said...

I hadn't heard of The Extraterrestrial. And I've heard good things about The Babadook, too, but doubt we'll get it in my town. I'll likely have to hold out hope it gets stuck on Netflix at some point.

Congrats to all with new releases!

Love the cover and the ship!

T.F. Walsh said...

The cover has a real punch to it... the red works perfectly. Congrats on your upcoming release... looks awesome:)

I love the cover-it looks amazing! How many Hot Tamales did you eat while going with the dragon theme?! Silly minds want to know?! lol

Alex you are a magician! I see amazing adventure with this new book-can't wait!

I'm insecure about all artistic endeavors-but I will still march onward and kick Ninja style those doubting doomsayers away~

I love that book cover, it looks awesome!

The guitar-shaped spaceship looks awesome! I think this cover is much better than you have at the previous books.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Rebecca, it will be a lot, but I will make it work.

Ella, at least fifty boxes!

Zoltan, thanks - think my publisher rocked it.

Nick Wilford said...

Badass cover, definitely the most dragonesque spaceship I've seen. Congrats. But don't say it's the last!!

I was gone Wednesday, so I'm late. Christopher had a hospital appt. Congratulations to everyone on their releases.

The cover looks great, Alex. The thing about your covers is they are very well done. And Dragon of the Stars is no exception. Looks great. During A to Z. YIKES! That will be crazy for you.

Unknown said...

Your cover looks amazing! April's going to be a crazy month for you, but if anyone can handle it, it's the ninja. This is the first I've heard about the publishing guide, which I'm sure will help lots of beginning and established writers.

Ava Quinn said...

The dragon and ninja from Al are full on awesome!!

Good luck in the jousts next week.

My writer insecurities are too plentiful to even consider numbering at the moment, so I'll have to pass on that.

The cover looks great and I'm sure you can survive it! Sorry to hear it's your last?!? I certainly hope not! Here's hoping it pulls you back in and you have more "last books" to come. =D

The Happy Whisk said...

Great cover, well done.

How soon in advance do you write up your A to Z posts? Or is it the visiting everyone during that time that will cause the meltdown?

I'm sure you'll be fun. A Ninja like yourself. It'll breeze by.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Nick, we'll see.

GB - priceless!

Thanks, Robyn!

Michael, it will be awesome.

Ava, Al did an amazing job.

Milo, you're welcome!

Maggie, I'm not planning on more.

Ivy, I plan the main part months in advance, but with the Ninja News, I have to put that together the night before. The real meltdown comes from trying to visit 150 blogs every single day...
