Retro A to Z Challenge: M – Megadeth 1985 (and SyFy's Face Off)

Megadeth – Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good! – 1985

This was the first Megadeth album and featured the title song and Rattlehead Rock. The band was founded by Dave Mustaine after he was thrown out of Metallica. While not my favorite, it ushered in a new era in thrash metal. The band continues to produce albums, and Mustaine has since cleaned up his act. (He's a husband, father, and born-again Christian.)

1985 fun facts –
*Cost of new home - $89,330 / UK - $40,169 pounds
*Cost of gas - $1.09
*First class stamp - .22 cents
*The first version of Windows 1.0 was released
*Compact Discs made their first appearance
*The wreck of the Titanic was located

Movies released –
Fright Night
Young Sherlock Holmes
Day of the Dead
Cocoon
Better Off Dead
Real Genius

Music released –
Dokken – Under Lock and Key
Dio – Sacred Heart
Rush – Power Windows

Game released –
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego

And why is 1985 special?
It’s the year Bish Denham met her husband and they were married that same year in September.

Bish is an author and a storyteller. She grew up in the Virgin Islands and often features moments and images from that time. Bish is also the master of synonyms and overused words. She’s a sweetheart, devoted friend, and doesn’t look old enough to have grandchildren. She also has a great sense of humor! Bish blogs at Random Thoughts.

Carrie Butler is celebrating her third blog anniversary with a very special blogfest project:

Face Off

Not your ordinary reality show – Face Off is a special effects make-up artist competition.
It’s fun to watch the contestants design and build their creations using silicone and whatever they find in the studio. Each week they are given a prompt and must design an ‘outfit’ to be worn by a model. The focus is on concept as much as execution. It’s an excellent show for creative types.
Catch it on the SyFy Channel.

Fan of Megadeth? (And can you believe they’ve been around that long?) Following the talented Bish? Can you contribute to Carrie’s book? Have you watched Face Off? And what do you remember about 1985…?

Oh, there were some great movies that year!
Better Off Dead is still one of my most quoted.

Face Off looks like a fun show. And Bish, you definitely don't look old enough to have grandchildren. :) Carrie's blog project is such a great idea.

What a terrific idea for Carrie's book. Yet more proof how generous this writing community is. We just finished a Titanic unit in my 5th grade class. It amazes me how engaging the story is - both sinking and recovery - to kids.

I assume that Bish had her children in the Tardis, or some other time warp. Grandmother? Not possible any other way.

Not a huge Megadeath fan, but Better Off Dead is one of the most oft-quoted movies of my hub's and mine.

I love the variety from 1985...and I was in the middle of my college years right then and, as a result, don't remember much.

Heather Musk said...

I love Megadeth, but didn't realise how long they'd been going. I was only 3 when this was released! Countdown to Extinction is probably my favourite.

I love this year. It reminds me of my childhood in New York.

I miss the price of gas.

Suzanne Furness said...

Met Bish recently, it is also the year I got married Bish - another good year! Things were sure cheaper back then.

Not being a movie fan I don't recall many of those mentioned, 1985 was the year I was diagnosed as having epilepsy and also the year my youngest son was playing soccer in the first team so spent much of the week-ends watching him play,
Where have all the years gone?

Bish is a dear friend and a blog buddy. 1985 reminds me of my happy childhood.

Rhonda Albom said...

Honestly, I never heard of Megadeth. However, I was really pleased to see Better off Dead on your movie list. I have been teased for admitting I really like that movie, filled with some classic lines. I would be pretty sure Face Off doesn't exist in NZ, too bad.

Charlie Warren said...

Megadeth is absolutely awesome! I have the cover illustration for "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" as my desktop background. My favorite album from them is Rust In Peace - brilliant from start to finish with amazing musical talent on full display! I'm a Mustaine guy and I always wondered how career of Metallica would have turned out differently if Mustaine never left the band. Hell, better yet, what if it was still James, Lars, Dave, and Cliff after all these years? I imagine the musical output would have turned out quite differently - for the better in my opinion - but who really knows?

CA Heaven said...

The big four of thrash metal are still worth listening to. Must admit that I play my old Slayer albums more often than Megadeath >:)

I watched some of the episodes of Face Off first Season. It is a great show and the host has moved up since Passion (right name of the soap?). Sharon Bayliss was actually featured this morning on Clare Dugmore's blog. Congrats. Thrown out band mate starts another band? Awesome! Definitely want to find out more about Carrie's new book and movement. In 1985 I became a year old, so nothing.

1985 was all work, work, work for me. I was living at the Lorne Hotel on the Great Ocean Road, in Victoria. My husband to be was the Head Chef and I was working the Restaurants, bar and office.

Lorne is a little beach side town of 900 people (at that time) and during holidays and over Christmas would swell to a population of over 2000.

As management of a very large hotel chain, we had free access to accommodation at sister hotels and free entry to the live bands and food.

Living in the Hotel, I had maid service and spent a lot of time socializing.

It was a busy, but very enjoyable year.

Cathrina Constantine said...

In 1985 my 3rd child was born. I was a busy, busy mother...Good Year!

Rusty Carl said...

Not quite as strong a year for movies as some others - I say that despite watching Real Genius more times than any human should.

And I love Face Off. Never miss an episode. Although it comes on on Tuesdays around these parts.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Andrew, I want my two dollars...

Ilima, I don't think she looks old enough either!

Elephant, I'll buy that answer.

Lynda, I was in college at the time as well.

Heather, you rock!

Rhonda, that film is a classic.

Charlie, they probably would've maintained their edge much longer.

Marcy, the fashion can stay gone forever.

Carolyn, bonus for you!

Jemi Fraser said...

Bish is great!
I'd forgotten the movie Coccoon - such a fun movie :)

Kirsten said...

And I was sure you were going to use Metallica for your M band! Shows what I know--and I'm surprised Metallica has been around that long too. :)
I love that cover image on Destruction. Makes want to write a story--or, as in this case, read one!

Workingdan said...

I love Megadeth! I went to see them in concert in Fort Wayne. It was a small venue and was very up close and personal. It was one of the best concerts I've been to. I nearly got busted smoking pot out in the parking lot and almost didn't make it to the show.

Ah yes, the good ol' days!

Heather M. Gardner said...

Thrown out of Metallica? You make it sound like he had nothing to do with that. :)

I prefer the style of Metallica to Megadeth but they have a few songs that I like.

It's a shame but I don't recall a lot of high school. I really hated those years. I was just so glad to get out.

Face Off looks really cool. If I could shorten those shows so I could watch them create, without all the human drama interaction, I would enjoy them more.

Letter M, Alex! Woo HOO!

I remember seeing Cocoon in the theatres and watching the news about Titanic. 1985 was a fun year-had a great 3 day camp party in my yard(grew up in the country) and moved out that year-lots of fun. Amazing how cheap the stamps were

oh yes and I love Face off!

I remember the first Windows, I hated it. I had been using DOS for many years and was disgusted with the idea of all the pictures showing what to do. Drawers opening for files and so on. I am so glad they eventually changed all that. I just remembered I didn't start using Windows for quite a few years after that. I was living in NC by then.

Only movie I saw was Cocoon, which I loved.

I love Megadeth! And, I love Dave Mustaine. He was great to see on That Metal Show a while back. He's still got it! Hang on, I need to crank some heavy metal right about now….done. "Trust" is playing as I type.

Also, I love Ronnie James Dio. I cried when he died. It was so sad.

1985 was the year I met my first hubby. We were high school sweet hearts. =)

I wonder if you'll highlight Randy Rhodes???? *hint hint*

Dan, saw them way back when, and it was a great show.

Heather, they could skip the drama.

Jean, it did come out that year.

The fall of 1985 I began my senior year of high school. That year was HUGE for me. I really had a schedule of classes I enjoyed. I was in Concert Choir and Swing Choir (the select singing group at my school), Acting Ensemble (another thing you had to audition for to be part of), and I decided not to take Physics. No science for me that year. Whee! I did take an enriched math class to make up for it.

In the fall of 1985 our school put on a production of the musical L'il Abner and I played Mammy Yokum. That remains one on my fondest memories. Period. Good times.

My parents took me to see Cocoon in the theatre, which I've long questioned the judgment of. I was only five, and it scared the daylights out of me when that woman stepped out of her skin and revealed herself as an alien. It scared me just as much at twelve, when I was watching TV with the teenage babysitter at my father's boss's holiday party. The boss's two young kids were asleep, and the adults were out at a restaurant, so we went downstairs to watch TV. She just had to flip onto that movie, and thought it was really neat.
