Retro A to Z Challenge: F – Foo Fighters 1997 (and Captain America II Review)

Foo Fighters – The Colour and the Shape – 1997

It wasn’t their first, but this was their breakout album and established the band as a legitimate force. The songs are very catchy and include some of my favorites – Everlong, Monkey Wrench, and My Hero. The music videos also revealed the band’s humorous side!

1997 fun facts –
*Cost of a house - $124,100.
*Scotland voted to create own Parliament after 290 years union with England
*Woolworths closed its last store after a hundred years of operation
*Microsoft became the most valuable company at 261 billion
*Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was released

Movies released –
Men in Black
Titanic
The Lost World
The Fifth Element

Music released –
Faith No More – Album of the Year
Deftones – Around the Fur
Catherine Wheel - Adam & Eve
Big Wreck – In Loving Memory

Games released –
Fallout
Need for Speed II

And why is 1997 special?
It was the year after Shannon Lawrence got married, which was a good year despite the fact they were working all the time and yet broke because she was close to extended family for the first time since she was a child.

Shannon is a writer living in Rockies of Colorado. She’s also an excellent photographer and shares the scenery and wildlife of her area on her blog. If you’re looking for places accepting submissions or contests, Shannon always has a great list. Shannon is stability in all things, especially friendship, and you can always count on her. You can find her at The Warrior Muse.

Movie Review

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The best Avengers film since The Avengers!
It’s practically impossible to discuss the story without spoilers. Let’s just say this film is a MAJOR game-changer. You don’t want to miss it.
The film is also equal parts espionage-thriller and superhero story. It’s definitely more serious than the first one. (Although Black Widow has some really funny lines.)
Captain America comes off as a butt-kicking hero from start to finish. The supporting cast is also awesome as their characters – Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Falcon. (The latter is an excellent addition, complimenting the Captain well, plus the wings are amazing.) The Winter Soldier is a total badass. However, he’s not the key point of the film.
The filmmakers have found their stride with action sequences, and of course the effects are top notch.
There's even a nod to Pulp Fiction.
And stay for the end of credit scenes. Yes, there are TWO! One after the first set of credits then another after all the credits.
Did I mention this film is a game-changer?
Highly recommended!!!

Anyone else a Foo Fighter fan? Following Shannon? Reading Hart’s series? Who else saw Captain America? (Am I right? You can’t really tell anyone the story?) And what do you remember about 1997…?

YES! I love Foo Fighters, and this was one of my favorite albums in HS. I can still remember rocking out to "Monkey Wrench" "Hey Johnny Park" and "Everlong" at the teen center or my friends' house. Deftones were one of my faves as well, Around The Fur was a solid album but my fave was their next one,White Pony

I bought my first house in 1997 - and paid a lot less than that. And for the one we currently live in a few years after that. For which I am grateful.

I got married in '97 as well! And The Fifth Element is one of my favorites. Great year.

My daughter is seeing Captain America tomorrow with friends. I haven't had a desire to see it but like your review, I've been hearing great things about it. I may need to cave and go.

Love the Foo Fighters! I turned 12 in 1997. I got married in 2007, 10 years later. 1997 was definitely a good year for books and movies!

Whoo! Foo Fighters fans unite! I can't wait to see the latest Captain America movie and the actor who plays Falcon drops major props in the ABC Marvel series as well. I'm so excited about Tuesday's upcoming episode! Plus the trailer they showed towards the end last week rocked the stratosphere.

*Whispers* Titanic took over the world.

GAH, now I have to see Captain America...can't handle the curiosity!

1997...hmmm...my husband and I were getting ready to move from Vegas to Iowa to be closer to family.

I remember a friend talking about this Harry Potter book-thing way back then. We hadn't heard of it yet. A few years later, we were a family of addicts, reading Harry out loud together, watching the movies together...when our daughter went away to camp one summer, we had to buy two books, one for her to read. She and her dad sent secret letters back and forth to each other about the book...keeping me in the dark because I was third in line for reading...

I've been to see Foo Fighters - Incredible live band.

1997 I was in my second year at Uni studying psychology - heavy year! But awesome fun too. :)

And I recall the Woollies closing down. They have a long heritage and it was sad. But you what, I hadn't bought anything from one of their shops for years?

CANNOT WAIT to see Captain America - hubs said we won't get chance to see it till we're in Vegas, in a couple of weeks. I'm not complaining :) Brilliant!

Captain America is the movie my four year-old son is begging me to take him to, but I have a feeling it's a little too intense for my little guy. Not quite the Spiderman and His Amazing Friends from the 70's that he's used to watching. :)

Thanks for the review, Alex. I was on the fence about Captain America, but now I'll make plans to go and see it. :-)

I was a bright eyed 15 year old in 1997 and LOVED Foo Fighters and anything else on Casey's Top 40 (and I feel so old right now). And I remember that my history teacher did a big thing over Scotland having their own Parliament.

Woolworths didn't close down till a few years later here in the UK and I'm still missing it, so handy for cheap knick knacks. Shannon was experiencing first year of married life as I was experiencing first year of motherhood in 1997.

My son was born in 1997 & I wanted to name him Harry (vetoed by the hubster) - not b/c of the Potter kid since I hadn't heard of him yet, but how cool would that have been?

I turned 18 near the end of '97, and moved to Massachusetts that June. My parents and brother had already moved in April, but I felt I'd been cheated out of enough that year and elected to stay with my grandparents in Pennsylvania to finish out my junior year at the same school. It wasn't easy on me, but I felt it were important to finish what I'd started, particularly since I'd finally started to like the school and feel accepted by more people at that point.

1997 was special to me because that's when my first child was born... it was kinda a blur because of that, too.

I'm petty surprised Capt America was good. Now, I'm looking forward to seeing it. :)

Shannon, you're welcome. And no, you can't say why. The whole movie is a spoiler.

Ivy, no spoilers, I promise!

Michelle, they all seem to be south of the equator.

Maurice, yes it will!!!

LuAnn, yes that was a major year for you.

Susan, that's probably who made them originally...

Ken, go enjoy!

Alex: Thanks for the shout out.

About the only I really remember from 1997 is hooking up with my current employer and dealing with fatherhood (son was 5 at the time).

Got that Foo-Fighters c.d. and I agree it was a good one.

I opted to see 'Noah' yesterday instead of "Captain America" and it (Noah) was awful. I had my doubts about trusting Hollywood with a Biblical story, but what they cranked out was UNBELIEVABLE.

I Do know Shannon, but haven't been by her place in a long time. I think I go over there now. Thanks for the reminder.

Well, I do like the Foo Fighters so you caught my attention right away.
Titanic was a movie filled with all
the elements to make it a success. I
have not seen the new Captain America but, I would like to see it.

I really enjoy reading your theme posts. So clever Alex..

I promise, I'll stay through the credits to see both scenes.

1997...what was I doing that year? I was in sixth grade...oh. Oh no. Please no.

I don't want to remember 1997.

I've always enjoyed the Foo Fighters on the radio, but never bought an album.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was awesome. Hubby and I really need to catch up on Agents of Shield now.

I live in Cleveland and they filmed the new Captain America here last year. I was walking downtown and I walked right through one of their scenes. Some big guy starts yelling that I can't cross the street. Well I started yelling back that I have to get to that building behind him. I had no idea they were making a movie here. I didn't get that memo. I'm always the last to know. I finally saw the first one last week. I'm not really a fan of it.

When I think of the Foo Fighters, I think of the movie City of Angels. For some reason, I keep thinking they did a song for that movie.

And I haven't heard a lot about The Winter Soldier but I did see the actor who plays Falcon on Ellen and he was hilarious. For that reason alone, I hope to catch this movie before it leaves the theater.

Yay, Shannon! She's an amazing person & brilliant writer:) I'm taking my gifted teen writing class to see The Winter Soldier *we're working on superhero stories, so, ya know, it's research*

Brian, that's what my wife said - it reminded her of the Bourne movies.

GB, you're welcome.

Faraaway, I heard it was terrible and totally lacking in God.

Truedessa, thank you!

JE, sixth grade? You could be my daughter...

Lee, that's cool you were on the set. Literally.

Angela, Red Hot Chili Peppers did a song for that soundtrack.

Samantha, you couldn't select a better movie for that.

1997 was my favorite year ever! I was in college, but majored in U2. Went to my first U2 concert that summer, and just generally had the time of my life as much as possible that year. Oh, to be so young and free again!

I saw all these movies mentioned when they came out (something I NEVER do, anymore, but movies were cheaper back then), but I don't even remember The Lost World. What was that one about?

I want to watch Captain America, hope it is still in theaters by the time I'm back home!

For me there's something weirdly addictive about the Fifth Element. Every time I happen to catch it on TV, I just have to watch it.

I trust your judgment on Captain America, so of course I've now got to see it. If it's a game changer and has some great supporting characters, then I'll be in for a treat.

From reading your post '97 looked like a good year but it was all a blur to me. The first part of that year was spent in Dr visits and tests at the hospital then surgery on my hand and the rest of the year in physical therapy. I cannot really remember anything about that year. :/

I remember Titanic. Loved it.
And Men in Black.
My memory just doesn't recall much else.

I've seen all of the movies you mentioned in 1997, lol. Titanic was my favorite by far. I haven't seen Captain America yet and will probably check it out on DVD. I'm really looking forward to next Amazing Spiderman installment though. Thanks for sharing, Alex!

Men in Black was such a fun movie. That might have been my 1997 highlight. Movies were my break from the heavy work load and stress at a demanding job.

Watched CA over the weekend, both kid and parents enjoyed it. Can't believe Titanic was that long ago!

My aunt was an etiquette expert and MTV once had her come on concerning "prom etiquette" according to her daughter, my cousin. The Foo Fighters were on with her, and they were all wearing prom dresses. My aunt was in her late seventies and found them pretty fun to do a show with. She was a very cool person.

I remember 1997 ... it was a good year, the year before a new job. Stopped by after I saw Shannon's post, so it was fun to learn more about her too.

Aww...you featured Shannon! Missing her so much. For those of you reading - she was an A-Z co-host for several years, along with her other impressive credentials. A true friend.

Have seen all the movies in your "released list" and they are some of my favorites.
