August Movie Preview! Plus Solomon Kane Review, Bambi Meets Godzilla, Ninja News, and Special Announcement

Here are the upcoming movies for August! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

2 –

Europa Report
An international crew of astronauts undertakes a privately funded mission to search for life on Jupiter's fourth largest moon.
Director: Sebastián Cordero
Stars: Christian Camargo, Embeth Davidtz, Michael Nyqvist, Sharlto Copley
Unique found footage film that’s generating some good buzz. I just might be found footage overdone though…

2 Guns
A DEA agent and a naval intelligence officer find themselves on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel. While fleeing, they learn the secret of their shaky alliance: Neither knew that the other was an undercover agent.
Director: Baltasar Kormákur
Stars: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton, Bill Paxton
Washington and Wahlberg – could be action-packed fun.

9 –

Elysium
A factory worker takes on a mission to hijack his way onto a man-made space habitat.
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Stars: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga
From the director of District 9. Not an original idea (Battle Angel Alita anyone?) but I’m hoping it’s as good as the previews.

Planes
Dusty is a cropdusting plane who dreams of competing in a famous aerial race. The problem? He is hopelessly afraid of heights. With the support of his mentor Skipper and a host of new friends, Dusty sets off to make his dreams come true.
Director: Klay Hall
Stars: Val Kilmer, Teri Hatcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Carlos Alazraqui
From Disney not Pixar – can you say Cars with wings?

We’re the Millers
A veteran pot dealer creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico.
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, Jason Sudeikis, Ed Helms
From the creator of Dodgeball, which was actually kind of funny...

Also releasing - Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

16 –

Kick Ass 2
The costumed high-school hero Kick-Ass joins with a group of normal citizens who have been inspired to fight crime in costume. Meanwhile, the Red Mist plots an act of revenge that will affect everyone Kick-Ass knows.
Director: Jeff Wadlow
Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jim Carrey, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
I’ll admit it – guilty pleasure! And the first one really did kick ass

Also releasing – Paranoia, The Butler, and Jobs

23 –

The World’s End
Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.
Director: Edgar Wright
Stars: Rosamund Pike, Simon Pegg, Martin Freeman, Nick Frost
From the creator of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz – need I say more?

Also releasing – The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Movie Review

Solomon Kane
After waiting years, I finally got to see this film!
A mercenary’s soul is bound for hell as punishment for his deeds, but he seeks redemption by helping an innocent family. Watching it gave me some serious D&D flashbacks. It has that vibe to it and the action was really good.
The acting was also good. James Purefoy was perfect as the lead. It was also nice to see Pete Postlethwaite in one of his last roles.
It’s not an epic film, but they did a lot with a very small budget.
As a Christian, I really dug the message of the film – every soul is redeemable.
Recommended – and after viewing this film, I told my wife that it was much, much better than The Wolverine!

Need a good laugh? (Did you watch Bambi Meets Godzilla?) Ready for some free books or a commitment to a goal? Anyone else see Solomon Kane? And what movies catch your eye for August?

Monday I have a special announcement regarding CassaStorm! Stay tuned…

Ah, Bambi Meets Godzilla is a classic! I can't remember the first time I saw this it was so far back. The wiggly claws at the end are a nice touch.

Congrats to everyone, and *whew* so many movies in August, huh? I wonder when the kids will start begging.

Some great films coming... Percy is the one for us... Kick Ass 2, just turned wishy-washy on cause of Jim Carrey's need to re-think violence... nice attempt to let us know the film is violent and free plug for it... thanks for reverse psychology?

congrats to Micheal on new venture.

Who is this Gary, person... people keep talking about? Double-Wink!

See I can do it to, Mr. Carrey!

There is a lot coming out in Aug I'd like to see. More than most months. Really want to see Solomon Kane but keep forgetting it exists. I'll catch it soon.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Sean, I think it came out about the same time as Hardware Wars. Another classic.

Annalisa, nothing wrong with that!

Optimistic, I haven't seen it. Might catch it this weekend. Great buzz around the film.

Michelle, you're welcome. Sorry I was a day late.

Natalie, that's good to know!

Rusty, it finally appeared on NetFlix - dump it in your queue, you'll dig it.

I remember seeing Bambi meets Godzilla at the theaters before Godzilla 1985.
I can't wait for The World’s End.
I love Simon Pegg!

Poor Bambi. Funny tho.

Lots of new films out and new books, congratulations to all the new authors.

Chris Desson said...

Bambi vs Godzilla= Classic. I remember seeing this video everywhere. I think I even remember the premium movie channels showing it before whatever flick was starting.

I want to see The Wold's End. Shaun of the Dead creator and cast plus the actor from Hitchhiker's Guide--Aw-w-w-wesome.

Unknown said...

Solomon Kane is noe I really want to see. 2 Guns looks interesting as well! Big congrats to Michael, didn't know he was making copyright services as well...Guess I missed that, then again I have been a bit dizzy as late!

Juliana Haygert said...

As usual, so many intriguing movies coming out.
I'm a little dubious of Planes ... I think it's going to be too similar to Cars.

Oh, you liked Solomon Kane more than The Wolverine? Really? Now I want to watch it ...

Unknown said...

Liked the sound of the World's End, think it is at our little cinema in our medieval market town. Recently had the new star trek movie, thought it was terrific.

Rachna Chhabria said...

I am looking forward to the Percy Jackson movie. Michael's new venture will be wonderful for writers looking for editors (he does such a good job with blurbs).
Looking forward eagerly to the CassaStorm announcement on Monday.

All the new movies sound great. And yah! I will get them here in Mexico. thanks for the laugh with Bambi, and also the heads up on Solomon Kane. Hope Netflix has it.

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

Loving the look of 2 Guns!

And I shall be back on Monday :)

I am definitely in for some Kick Ass2. I thought the first one was seriously under rated. Soloman Kane sounds like fun, too; I do like James Purefoy :)

Solomon Kane sounds good. :)

Sandra Ulbrich Almazan said...

I have to check out some of the Ninja news.

Believe it or not, even though my movie viewing is far below average, I've actually seen "Bambi vs. Godzilla."

Suze said...

My brother had a similar response to the redemptive quality of The Dark Knight as you did to Solomon Kane.

Charles Gramlich said...

I really liked the first Kick Ass myself. AS for Elysium, wow that basic idea has been done to death almost.

ilima said...

Elysium is SO my kind of movie...I can't wait to see it. And I saw Rachel's news on Publishers Marketplace today. So excited for her.

Pat Hatt said...

2 guns, kick ass and worlds end for sure for me. Bambi technically only met godzilla's foot.

Stephen Tremp said...

I liked Kick Ass and am looking forward to the sequel.

I saw where Jim Carey said he regretted accepting a role in the movie. But hey, its not like Hollywood is beating down his door these days with 5 star movie scripts.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Siv, you had other things going on.

Julian, it wasn't great but it was much better.

Leigh, they do.

Madeline, I want to see that film.

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

I didn't know you played Dungeons & Dragons! So did I. You never talk about it, and now I know it's something we have in common :).

I haven't seen the Europa Report, but io9 raves about it in just about every post they put up. They also said it's available to watch online right now for free (I was gonna knock it off the list this weekend).

Congratulations to Michael Gesu.

I plan on seeing Elysium, but I just don't understand how an artificial ring in the sky can somehow have all the good stuff from Earth. Earth is planet-sized and the ring-sized thing in the sky would have to get imports all the time from Earth. You just wouldn't have the resources for an entire civilization.

Or maybe I just need to see the movie. But it already doesn't make much sense to me. Ringworld by Larry Niven made much more sense because Ringworld was HUGE.

Roland D. Yeomans said...

Bambi Meets Godzilla is a true classic. I'm looking forward to THE WORLD ENDS and CITY OF BONES. You can get SOLOMON KANE at Wal-Mart for only ten dollars! How cool is that?

Danette said...

None of these sound interesting to me. Am I too jaded? Hollywood doesn't do anything that sounds terribly inventive or interesting to me these days...

Thanks for the previews!

Maurice Mitchell said...

"Bambi meets Godzilla" is a YouTube video befoe YouTube. BTW that Facebook WWII page is hilarious! Thanks for the link.

Livia Peterson said...

There's so many movies I want to see in August: Europa Report, Elysium, Jobs, Paranoia, and The Butler. I have to see Blue Jasmine and Fruitvale Station yet. It's overwhelming how many movies there are out there, but I still manage to see most of
them at the cineplex.

I've been noticing this trend in Hollywood's mainstream films: they lack originality and are very predictable. It seems everything is for the money and it is. But to be able to do that they must produce a story that SELLS. I'm getting tired and sick of it, but at least indie films helps a little bit.

Awesome movie preview and commentary, Alex!

RaveAir said...

I'll check this Solomon Kane movie soon. It looks interesting!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Julia, glad you caught that!!

Michael, I played D&D for years. Not sure why I rarely mention it. Elysium has several issues it will need to answer to be good. Just wish the concept was more original.

Roland, I just might buy it!

Maurice, glad you enjoyed it!

Livia, August is a landslide of movies. Original ones though? Not many.

Zoltan, you would enjoy it!

Bambi Meets Godzilla was an extra on the Godzila 1985 VHS release. I remember just about dying from laughter when I first watched it as a kid.

Andrew Leon said...

I saw Solomon Kane a few years ago. It was one of the very first comic mini-series I ever bought. I plan to watch it again now that netflix finally has it.

This is the first year in a long time where there are a bunch of movies I want to see coming out in August. Probably won't make it to many of them, though. Planes is probably guaranteed.

Mark said...

I ahdn't heard of Europa Report...it looks cool, thanks!

Elysium looks like it might be action with a brain, which would be nice.

Elysium looks sick. I'll be there opening day! :)

Jack said...

Lots of movies coming out. I kind of want to see World's End. Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost....yep. I also want to try and get my hands on Shaun of the Dead, I've heard that one is funny.

Had no idea Planes was a Disney movie. I thought it was a continuation of the Cars films. That's rather a let down. I thought the Disney, Pixar copy thing was over by now.

Alex-

I am a big fan of Solomon Kane (all things Robert E. Howard)-is this a new movie?

I was totally unaware of this until seeing your post title on my dashboard.

DiscConnected said...

I almost forgot-

Have been a fan of "Bambi Vs. Godzilla since seeing it in high school way back in the late seventies.

I think the filmakers captured Bambi's poignant innocence, and really developed her character.

The plot is intricate, with subtexts and subplots, neatly tied together and culminating in the tragedy of the Godzilla encounter.

Truly a masterpiece on every level....

Rachel, you're welcome.

Michael, you are welcome!

Edi, hoping it's good.

Deniz, Jamie over in Wales has already seen it.

Larry, that made me laugh!! Solomon Kane came out three years ago and then got tied up in a studio battle. It's finally on NetFlix now.

Fran, that's what makes the movie.

Lynn, you're welcome!

Oh deer, poor Bambi! *Splat!* Thanks for sharing that all time classic movie. Bambi Vs Godzilla, a poignant film, I guess. I have no idea who this Gary is. I shall have a check of the link to his site. Thanks!

Also, a big thanks to Disney for really phoning it in with Planes. "Hey, Cars was successful, so let's make the exact same movie except with airplanes. And let's hire Dane Cook to star in it. Everyone loves him."

Stay tuned for Disney's Boats (2014), Trains (2015), and Golf Carts (2016), which stars Jack Black as a lovable golf cart that just wishes it could race at the track! BRILLIANT!

Why Tokyo in the film I've no idea - but I'm sure there's some important reference to Godzilla .. and like Sean I love the closing of the toes!

Cheers Hilary

Love Bambi Meets Godzilla! Thanks for all the updates, including all the new movie releases. I can't wait to see some, and will take a pass on others. lol

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Ella, Bambi had it coming.

Julie, it's as if Disney is competing with itself.

Sarah, I didn't know that about Clare.

MsMariah, I'd be honored if you did read it!

Jay, it came out several years ago and finally hit video last month.

Tina, I will try to increase the snark next month. I was a little pressed for time this month.

Saumya, thank you! Wow, I'm flattered.

Jamie, you would really dig it.

I'm blinking at the plot of "World's End." Can't imagine how this ended up being made into a film!

Susan Oloier said...

Love the snarky comments, Alex. They make the reviews! Saw the preview for Planes when I took my kids to see Despicable Me 2. I didn't see Cars, and Planes seems even less interesting. Kid movies are the only ones I see in theaters anymore.

Mystery. I know I left a comment for you Wednesday but I don't see it there today.
Puzzle.

HELLO!

My son and I want to see Percy Jackson but I really want to see World's End! How can we go wrong?

Thanks for all the info.

Hope you are having fun editing/writing!

Darn those lucky Brits! I just started watching Spaced with Simon Pegg and now I really want to see The World's End!

I'll admit, when I saw my teenagers had watched Kick Ass (the first), I about died, until I watched it myself. Don't get me wrong, I still died a little inside knowing they'd seen it, but I loved it. What a hilarious movie. I can't wait to see the second one!

Oh, and I did read your post about blogging from my phone, which I can't comment from. Don't ask. But "so not techie" has something to do with it.

I'm the worst when it comes to following / commenting in an organized fashion. I rely on my squishy, goo-filled brain. Not so reliable. But don't think for one second that you or any of my bloggy friends don't cross my mind on a weekly basis (sometimes daily). Because y'all do. I just get behind. Hugs. :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Elizabeth, add aliens and anything is possible.

Heather, sorry if it vanished...

Candilynn, thanks! And that's all right if you couldn't comment.

You know I love a good redemption story, and I'll watch anything with James Purefoy in it!

Jam packed full of interesting stuff as usual, Alex! Oh how I've missed stopping by and visiting your blog since last June. Yes, laughter is always helpful and necessary...a must have, even in the most dire situations:) Happy Friday to you, kind sir!

It was great to have Bassan visit last week. I know people who checked in liked him a lot.

No movies this week. This is the week of non-stop company.

Looking forward to your announcement.

Thanks for the movie info, Alex! A lot of these look good, especially that one you reviewed.

I feel like I have been gone forever. I actually really want to see 2 Guns. I also have to take my daughter to see Sea of Monsters as the Percy books were the first novels she read.
I did laugh at the Bambi meets Godzilla. I actually have one of the old Godzilla toys from the 80's on my desk.

I hadn't heard of Solomon Kane before, but maybe I'll check it out. Purefoy is cool, and I was always a big Postlethwaite fan. The only August movie I'm really looking forward to is City of Bones. Reading the book right now and liking it. Hopefully they do a good job. Elysium really won't be for me, and the others are just meh. Have a great weekend, Alex! :D

William Kendall said...

I have seen Bambi versus Godzilla before... always good for a laugh.

I think I've seen all the summer movies I want to see...

Alex, our paths have crossed a number of times- we follow some of the same blogs. I'm one of the administrators for Authors for Oklahoma, Shelly's page. Would it be possible for you to make some mention of the initiative? We're trying to muster up more of a response, and we've extended our deadline by a week... the details are here.

Great movie lineup! The Elysium previews are missing a fundamental element in any hook: why the hell is he breaking in and risking his life? They never elaborate on that in any of the trailers I've seen. Super stoked about Kick Ass 2 and I may see World's End, too.

Happy Friday!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

MJ, we've missed you!!

Lee, he and I really appreciated it.

Brandon, so do I. And I used to have ones from Japan when we lived there.

William, I'd be glad to plug it again for you and Shelly!

Alexia, good point.

Hey Alex, I'm just popping over for a long overdue visit. Life has been crazy and just when I thought things were finally settling down a bit my son got hurt - right back to crazy times! Hope all has been well in your world :)

Thanks for all the movie reviews! I might have overlooked Solomon Kane but for your mention of it--redemption is a big theme for me as well, so I'm heading right on over to Netflix from here.
I'm looking forward to all those great sci-fi flicks coming up soon!

I'd never seen Bambi vs Godzilla, but guessed the ending. My husband thought it was funny.

No movies out there to interest me this go around. Maybe next month.

Michael is helping me on a project, excellent!

Yolanda, that's great.

So are you going to be reviewing Airplanes and We're the Millers for us???? Please!!!! :D

I haven't heard of the other ones. They didn't show the trailers in my writing cave, I guess.

I'm always a late, but I always show up. Maybe I’m the only one who sees it, but 2 Guns seems like a twist on Tango and Cash, but I still want to see it…and yeah I’m excited about Kick-Ass 2
Thanks for the Solomon Kane Review. Hadn’t heard of it.

Meet the Millers sounds like it could be really funny or really bad.

I wish Michael luck with his new job.

Definitely going to check out what Michael Di Gesu has to offer (I'm hoping it's cheap) :D

And loved Bambi Meets Godzilla :)

Congrats to Milo.

I just had to buy a new dryer so I won't be seeing any films this month. Bummer.

I CANNOT wait for World's End. I typically don't get jazzed up about movie releases....but you can bet your bottom that MY bottom will be in a theater seat on opening night :D

PK, and it's an awesome science fiction summer.
