Insecure Writer’s Support Group, Ninja News, and Two BIG Surprises!

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. (This month we are posting on Tuesday as well.) I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

By the time you read this, I will be a page or two away from finishing the first draft of CassaStorm. I’ll celebrate by playing Diablo all weekend. Hey, I’ve only killed him five times! One more and he’ll really be dead.

This story won’t be as simple as the other two. There are many subplots, some of which emerged as I wrote, so I need to go back and insert some scenes. (Yes, while everyone else uses a compacter on their manuscript, I use a tire pump.) It’s a little darker than the others as well. I’ll need to lighten things up here and there, maybe add more snark. (I don’t want a Dark Knight Rises, thanks!)

What is similar? It’s still all about the characters. The messages are simple and clear. (I’m not very subtle – you won’t miss them.) It’s still a space opera, low on tech. And its purpose is just to entertain and wrap up this series.

Someone else recently discussed finding our niche as writers, and I’ve definitely found mine. I write science fiction space opera that is very accessible. And I’m happy with that. Science fiction tends to turn people away because some of it is so high tech or hardcore. But I know so many people who’ve never read a science fiction book who read mine because it was accessible. That alone is far more than I ever hoped to accomplish!

Ultimately, I just hope you enjoy the third and final book of the series.

Just don’t ask me how a teleporter works, because I have no idea!

Please visit other members of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! We have many new members. And remember, some people are on summer vacation.

Ninja News!

Medeia Sharif is holding a giveaway to mark her blog’s anniversary and the milestone of a hundred books read this year – visit her site for details.

You can get a free copy of chapter one of Shadow Spinner: "Part One: The Tunnel" by Andrew Leon from Amazon right now! "Part Two: The Kitchen Table" will be coming soon.

Stephen Tremp’s Blurbfest is Wednesday August 15 – check out his site for details!

For those of you with iPads, are you watching the Olympics as they happen? You can download the NBC London 2012 Live Extra app for free and see many of the events you won’t see on TV. (Like even more women’s beach volleyball!)

Two Big Surprises

Two things that surprised me this week. (Stunned, shocked - something along those lines!)

First, Sylvia Ney interviewed me a couple months ago and she just sent confirmation that it will appear in the November issue of Southern Writers. Whoa! I’ll be in a magazine. Yes, this Ninja is stunned…

Second big surprise! Someone posted about this great book she was reading about writing, publishing, and social media. And she said my name was mentioned! So I grabbed my iPad to check and sure enough – there I was in chapter three of How to be a Writer in the E-Age...and keep your e-sanity by Anne R. Allen, Catherine Ryan Hyde, and Saffina Desforges:

1) Focus on your genre or subgenre (unless you’re still experimenting with different genres.) You can discuss movies, videogames, TV shows, even jewelry and costumes – as long as they relate to your niche. A great example is SciFi writer Alex J. Cavanaugh’s super-popular blog that specializes in all things SciFi.

Double whoa! I had no idea. Thank you, Anne. Crap, need to inject some more science fiction into this blog now…

(And you can buy it HERE on Amazon!)

What’s your insecurity or accomplishment today? Watching the Olympics? Stunned I’m in a book and soon a magazine? (Humor me and say yes!)

Be sure to visit other members of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group!

So a mention in a book and an interview in a magazine! That means you're a proper celebrity now??

Congrats on finishing your WIP - I love that feeling. I also love the editing!

I can't believe I am second making a comment. Will definitely check out Media Sharif and congratulate her and will make a call on Stephen as well.

Congratulations Alex on the completion/ or almost of the first draft, it sounds exciting!

Clay said...

Awesome work on appearing in the publishing book! Congrats on your draft as well. You must be super excited to wrap up the series too! Cheers!

It is always tricky, writing accessible sci fi. I've had to do it before, writing comedy sci fi, and it's hard to remember that not everyone has read every sci fi book ever written.

Kyra Lennon said...

Your name in a book? You have SO hit the big time! :D

The Happy Whisk said...

Two wonderful surprises indeed and I don't know how the teleporter works, either.

Congrats on getting so much done.

Denise Covey said...

Congratulations on finishing your first draft of CassaStorm. What an accomplishment. I'm glad you're happy in your genre choice. You're right about hard core sci-fi. It isn't accessible to all.
Thanks for all the other news as well. Go you turning up in magazines.

My post seems to be up this time after 2 false starts...

Shouting at the TV and the crap commentary from the Olympic so called experts!

Michelle Wallace said...

I'm the perfect example of someone who has never read a sci-fi book, so the Cassa series could probably make me a convert...
So now you're in a magazine... wow! What next? Maybe a cameo appearance in a movie about blogging? Who knows?

Gossip_Grl said...

Congrats on the finish of your book! That's great news! I was wondering, how can I teleport from my job today? Just kidding :)

Cally Jackson said...

I'm also someone who doesn't read sci-fi - but the Cassa series is on my to-read list! Congrats on finishing your first draft of CassaStorm and the mentions in e-books and magazines - scoring goals all over the place! :-)

Michelle Wallace said...

Oh, I almost forgot... YAY to the London 2012 Live Extra i-Pad App and a bazillion YAYS!!!!!! to Olympic Gold Medalist, Chad Le Clos who is a homeboy! Actually he lives down the road... LOL

I think you've become famous! I think you deserve a gaming weekend.

Christine Danek said...

Look at you rock it out. Go Alex! Today, I'm moving forward (like always), holding my head high and trying to kick some butt with my writing. One day, one day.
I haven't seen much of the Olympics, but I saw the opening ceremonies. Paul McCartney was awesome.

Congrats on almost finishing your book and your other good news. Awesome.

Congratulations are EVERYTHING...finishing your book, and the mentions. You do a great job on your blog.

Space Opera. I love it.

Thanks, Annalisa - I'm something I guess!

CM, you are second!

Clay, more happy than you know.

Stu, guess it's a good thing it's what I write.

Thanks, Denise and glad your post finally took.

Michelle, THAT would be scary! And I'd be honored if you read one of my books.

Thank you, Cally!!

Christine, go kick some butt!

Teresa, that's what it's called. And good to hear from you.

Thanks everyone!
We have meetings this morning so I'll catch up on everyone's blog this afternoon.

You've nearly finished the final book? Oh well done! I'm one of those people who don't read SF but I read and enjoy yours. I'm so glad you've found your niche, and I'm sure it's the right one. Congratulations on getting into a book and into a magazine. You've arrived!

LynnRush said...

Yay. How fun, you're in a magazine. Super cool!!!! Hope you enjoy the next book. The final book in my Wasteland Trilogy is in editing. It was tricky closing up all the ends of all the things that started popping up through the first two books. And, it's sad to say goodbye to the characters.

Happy Writing. Have a super day!

Lan said...

Yay! Hopefully by the time you read these comments you will be done writing. There's nothing at all wrong with writing that's accessible. There are a great deal of readers (myself included) who will read nothing else!

Cathy Olliffe-Webster said...

Oh I'm SO happy to hear you're almost finished CassaStorm's first draft! Dave will be thrilled to hear you're progressing so well!
And kudos to you on those lovely surprises - we all knew you were a big celeb, Alex - the only one who didn't know was you!!!

Congrats, Alex! That's awesome all around!

I not really follow the events of Olympic games as did it at 4-8-12 years ago and unfortunately my iPad at my kids, who are at my parents for this week. But, there are much more options to watch the games as we could do at the past.

Congrats on your progress the CassaStorm!

You do a lot of work around here, helping yourself as well as propping up others. You deserve the props for yourself. Thanks again.

Hooray for finishing Number Three! I like your tire pump analogy. I had a writing teacher who said, "Some people are 'putter inners' and some people are 'taker outers.'" I like tire pump better!

Have a great mid-week, Roland

Rusty Carl said...

Whoa - that is big time awesome. Getting talked about in books and magazines. Too cool.

Lisa Regan said...

Wow! Congrats on all the good news! Good for you! I could not agree more about the accessibility factor. Readers want something that keeps them glued to the pages, not something so complicated that their mind wanders or they get frustrated. I think you've got the right idea!

Shah Wharton said...

Double congrats Alex. I'm so running over to look into that book. I'm almost done with my first novel, ready (I hope ) to publsh in October. I'm....TERRIFIED (yes, it deserves the capitals). Happy August IWSG. :)) I just finished my post.

I'm starting Camp NaNo today, so I'll be quiet on the blogosphere for the next month. As a reward, when I reach my daily word count, I'll creep around and visit IWSG blogs.

Wow, Alex! You are famous now! Congrats on the mag article and honorable mention in the book. That's good advice about focusing on your genre/sub-genre. I never thought about blogging in that way. Enjoy the completed first draft celebration! And I'll pass the Olympic App info on to my husband - I owe him some women's beach volleyball after my not-so-subtle reaction to the interview with the men's swim team last night...while they were still in their suits. ;)

Well done, Alex! It feels so great to finish a first draft. *claps* You are awesome! I like how you said your books are accessible. I like sci-fi books like that. I'm smart, but not THAT smart to read super techy sci-fi. Accessible is my type. Thanks. :D

So "Space Opera". Does that mean it's like a soap opera but set in space? haha Love it!

I think someone is going to take my nerd badge away. I haven't yet killed Diablo. I'm getting close. I think I'm one act away. I know...I'm slow.

Congratulations on being highlighted in the book and in the magazine. That's wonderful news. I guess you won't be a ninja for that much longer as your visibility will make it impossible for you to hide.

Nancy Thompson said...

I'm so happy for you, Alex, to be so close to finishing! I can't wait to experience that feeling again. And double congrats for being included in that book! What an awesome surprise that must have been. But it's true & you are an inspiring success. Not surprised you're included in the magazine though. You are & always will be a Rock Star! Yes, I'm loving the Olympics & have that app for my iPhone, but the resolution is poor on the live feed, at least on my phone, so I stick to TV. And hey, thanks for your kind words of support today. They mean a lot to me!

Julie Flanders said...

Alex as you might guess I am anxious for the release of CassaStorm. It sounds like it may be your best work based on your description so far. What's the ETA?

Yep, watching all 1.2 billion hours of Olympic coverage. Funny you mention womens volley ball. When it's not 40-degrees out in London, watching this event on a large hi-def TV borders on soft-core porn...that you can watch with your wife! Those suits could not be one stitch smaller.

Celebrity dude! And thus you are in a book. Not sure I would like to be stuck between the pages. Sorry, that was rather literal. And a magazine. I was featured in a magazine. Then again, do you read 'Better Gnomes and Gardens'?
Watching the Olympics with a choice of 24 additional BBC Olympic dedicated channels. Then again, we have to have a TV license. Heck, I haven't even passed the test!
Right then, I'm outta' here...

Mel, this Ninja will help the Pirate any way he can!

DG, yes she is! It's from three view points - Byron, Athee, and...

Sher, you should join us!!

Chuck, and the cameramen focus tight on their butts!!! Not that I'm complaining. And I plan to deliver CassaStorm to my publisher late fall, so it's their call from that point.

Robyn, but I'm really slow!

Gary, you are perfect for that magazine! And I do know about your TV license.

Golden Eagle said...

Congratulations on being in the magazine and the book! :)

Good for you on finding your niche.

That's so exciting that she mentioned your name!!! Just goes to show how many people you reach with your blog, from the lowly and unpublished to the high and mighty (aka. published). Congrats!

For a blogger celebrity, being a mag celebrity was the next in line...not shocked in the least bit.

So many good things. Finishing your manuscript is a cause for celebration. And it's awesome that you'll be in a magazine.

Thanks for the linkage regarding my giveaway. :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thanks, Tara!

Medeia, you're welcome.

CONGRAULATIONS, NINJALEX!!!!

Congrats on your novel progress and the name drop in that 'how-to' book! It sounds like something I should read; the social media age is quite intimidating for me.

Sci-fi is usually over my head (unless it's the Twilight Zone type-stuff) but if your books are half as 'accessible" as you say, i'll check 'em out for sure!

Unknown said...

You are full of surprises and they just keep coming :)Congrats on all your successes and have a great gaming week-end!

Leovi said...

Go! wait until November for that interview.

Julie Dao said...

You're even MORE famous now!!

Oh wow what fabulous surprises!
Congrats well deserved.
Good luck with CassaStorm. I hope it also goes down a storm for you! ;O)

Wow, neat stuff...I really have to check out that Southern Writers article. I'll get my insecure post up by next week...I guess I'm just feeling really happy and secure right now:)

E. M. Prokop said...

Congratulations Alex! We all feel your joy! That's fantastic...and, thanks for another great episode of IWSG...it's been an excellent adventure so far.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thank you Sherry. Wish I could remember who posted it now.

Thanks, Lass!!!!

Thanks, Insomniac. They are more about the characters than anything else. Science fiction is just the setting.

Siv, thanks.

Leovi, I need to remember to pick up a copy of that magazine.

Madeleine, almost finished.

Mark, nothing wrong with that.

Eve, glad you're enjoying it!

Maurice Mitchell said...

Alex, if you show up on TV you'll be the king of all media!

Mary Aalgaard said...

Hey, I'm a little late in posting my IWSG. I had some flight delays. We could have a "tall tale" excuse for not posting on time month! Although, mine is not a tall tale.

Congratulations on the magazine, the mention in the book and nearly finishing book three! I'm shattered just reading all that.

Loving the Olympics, it's just a shame I have to go to work during the day. I could sit on my sofa all day and watch it and get absolutely nothing done.

Kelly Polark said...

This post is full of all kinds of awesome! Congrats on the finished first draft (I'm assuming it is done by now! :)
And the mentions too! Too cool!

Anonymous said...

Congratulations on finishing your draft! (P.S. I'm embarrassed to ask: What is Diablo?? It sounds like a drinking game.)

Also, congratulations on all of the mentions. You are truly a super-star. It is well-deserved. :)

TL Conway said...

Finished draft? Check.
Mention in a book? Check.
Interview in a magazine? Check.

Alex, you never cease to amaze me! Congrats!

Bish Denham said...

Far out Alex, on all counts. That you can visit us all, write a blog and finish a novel all at the same time is pretty darn... ahem, amazing!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Maurice, if you see a deer caught in headlights on the evening news, that will be me.

Mary, your excuse was very valid!

Thanks, Rebecca.

Thank you, Kelly.

Liz, it's a computer game. Drinking would just mess it up.

Thank you, TL/

Bish, I am doing my best!

Hi Alex .. congratulations on finishing Cassastorm - guess you have by now! How was the Diablo?

Interesting point about your niche and thus making Sci-Fi accessible .. as Nicole says - I'm one step nearer getting myself sorted to buy and then read your books ... slow but sure!

Cheers - have a fun week .. Hilary
