Important A to Z Challenge Guidelines, My A to Z Theme, and Sad Songs Blogfest!

The A to Z Challenge starts Sunday!

For those of you participating, here are the basic guidelines:

Post on a topic or word that matches the corresponding letter of the alphabet, starting with “A” on Sunday, April 1, then every day except Sundays after that.

Visit fellow Challenge participants starting with the blog immediately following yours on the sign up list. Aim to visit five blogs a day; more if you have time.

Keep posts SHORT!

Turn off word verification. Make it easy for others to leave comments.

Make it easy for others to follow you.

Use the official A to Z button. Link back to the A to Z BLOG.

Have fun and make new friends!

My theme for the Challenge? I’ll get to that in a minute…

First, it’s the Sad Songs Blogfest, hosted by Spunk on a Stick’s Tips

Disappear by Dream Theater from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Song tells the unbelievably sad tale of a man sitting by his wife’s bed as she passes away. Song almost guaranteed to make me cry every time. (And I never want to be in that position. My wife is in big trouble if she dies first.)

After Me by Marillion from Season’s End
Song takes you to the depths of heartache before the uplifting ending. Saddest line – “There’s a stray dog she feeds that she found in the street and he loves her to hold him but he won’t let her keep him. And he claws at the door to be let out at night and she makes do without him and she worries about him.”

Collapse the Light into Earth by Porcupine Tree from In Absentia
It’s a song about someone who’s gone through a very traumatic event. It’s a metaphor for a breakup. The poor man sings about how the light has collapsed in the spot where his lover should be.

Losing it by Rush from Signals
The saddest song about aging you will ever hear. “The writer stares with glassy eyes, defies the empty page, his beard is white, his face is lined, and streaked with tears of rage. Thirty years ago, how the words would flow, with passion and precision, but now his mind is dark and dull, by sickness and indecision, and he stares out the kitchen door, where the sun will rise no more.”

Now, my theme for the Challenge!

Last year, my theme was featuring blogger buddies whose blog title corresponded with the letter of the alphabet. Everyone really seemed to enjoy it so I decided to put a little twist on it this year.

My theme – I have selected a word for each day and will present to you blogger buddies who fit that description, along with movies, music, etc. My theme is to give back, highlight some awesome bloggers, and have fun in the process.

The only downside is that I have a lot of blogger buddies. (Note sidebar which is still missing some blogs.) I won’t be able to mention everyone, but I will try to highlight some cool people.

I’ll also be posting short bits of Ninja News, so if you have anything exciting happen, new book release, anything – leave a comment and I’ll mention it the next day.

So, you never know who I will be highlighting on a given day!

Oh yeah, and I’ll be announcing my next solo Blogfest during the Challenge (first one since Worst Movies Ever – whoa!) and it’s really going to surprise you.

Any questions about the A to Z Challenge? Any sad songs on your list? Want to guess what my next blogfest will be? Do you like my theme for the Challenge? Care to share your theme? I’ve been hearing about some good ones…

Sounds like you've got all your ducks in a row, Mister Ninja! Best of luck with the challenge. In the best spirit of "ducks" I do believe I'll be winging it.

Never realized how sad the Rush song is. Substitute woman for man and subtract a bit of the facial hair and you've got moi. And how sad is that?

Good songs of your choice for the sad songs.

All set for the A to Z.

Would your next blogfest be about Danny Boy? well I only asked.

Yvonne.

I don't know those songs. I'm going to look them up.

I'm also going to mention some bloggers' books for A-Z. I'm going to blog about books, writing, and music I listen to while writing.

Have a great weekend.

Nice that you're highlighting fellow bloggers! Hmmm...wonder what the surprise blogfest will be! I think I've followed all of the rules except one - my first A story is longer than most, but hopefully that won't put people off. Good luck everyone!

Love your theme. What could mine be? Help, hehe :)

I'm stoked for this! I've already scheduled the first week's posts. I'll be traveling in London and Oxford that week so I want to have a backup in case I get distracted. :-)
I'll still have plenty of time to visit all sorts of cool blogs, though!

Yvonne, no, but he might be on your list!

Thanks, Lass!

Katie, I saw your name on the list - very cool.

Anna, you'll like it.

Mark, you'll have to check back, but don't think you'd fall under A!

Kyra, they're all rock songs, so no.

Lurker, funeral would be appropriate time.

Medeia, that sounds good!

Lisa, I'll still read it.

Oceangirl, thanks.

Sean, that's good.

Gail, it's a sad one.

Annalisa, that's all right.

Rusty, narrowing it down was the real challenge.

Natalie, it will be a super cool month.

Huntress, that's a good one.

Love your theme for the A to Z. I was hoping to do something similar, but other blog obligations have come up. I figure I'll take care of those--like promoting a friend's book deal, a blog tour--and stick to my theme for the rest.

I'm going with: What I've Learned About XXXX (depending on the letter).

Alex, i was really touched by the lyrics of Losing It. I have explored the challenges of aging in the stories in my short story collection. They were based somewhat on what I learned about the worst fears that people have about aging from my work as a hospital chaplain.

Blogging Buddies? What a cool theme. Mine's not nearly so fun or glamorous. Well, I'd love a mention for my book release next fall, but no pressure. And the saddest song I love most is Down In A Hole by my favorite old band Alice In Chains. So sad!

Alex-

I did not read all the comments, and can't help but wonder if I am the only reader who knows all the songs (heck, owns all the albums) for your sad song list!

Excellent choice from Marillion! I'd toyed with including "Beautiful" on my list, but did not think of it as a sad song (I was fixated on tearjerkers).

Hey Matt! Thanks, I really appreciate that.

Maryann, wow, bet you've had some touching and heart-wrenching experiences working there. God Bless you for doing it.

Nancy, you rocker chick! Hey, I can add you to one of the letters. Got a date yet?

Jennie, I will have to read yours then.

Hey Larry! A couple knew them, but not many. And Beautiful is a pretty song, but you're right, not sad.

CM, you know one more than most!

Cool theme! Can't wait for this. Mine is strong women, a different woman for every letter of the alphabet and a few fun facts as well about women's largely un-acknowledged history.

Sad songs...hmmm I like What It Takes by Aerosmith as well as Because of You by Kelly Clarkson. And isn't every single country song ever recorded sad? :) Here's to an awesome challenge!
