Dreams and the Muppets

Everyone have an awesome Thanksgiving? Finish your Nano project? Invent teleportation over the weekend? (Send me a private email if you did!)

I have some announcements and a movie review for you today.

First, Amity at Dreams are my Reality is celebrating her three-year anniversary of blogging today! And, I was honored when she asked me to contribute a few words to the event. My short tribute to Amity is now up at her site, accompanied by an even longer introduction that is really, really sweet. If you don’t already follow Amity, you need to visit Dreams are my Reality today!

Michael at In Time is hosting a one year blogaversary and (almost) five hundred follower celebration. Amazon gift cards, people! Get with it and go follow now!

I confess, I was a slug this past weekend. Outside of some eating and football games, I did nothing. Well, I did spend Sunday trying to figure out why our oldest computer died. Think the mother board ate itself. That’s never good. Seeking the help of a friend today and if we can’t fix it, there’s only one solution. Buy a new computer. That’s right – force me to purchase another geek toy! Damn I have such a rough life…

But, I did get out to the movies this weekend! That’s right, it was The Muppets for me.

The movie started out a little slow, but once they crossed that fourth barrier and let the audience in on the movie, it picked up. From that point, it was a trip down Muppet and the 80’s memory lane. Not sure how much anyone under the age of thirty-five will dig this movie, but Generation X and older will appreciate the nostalgia. As always, the story has a sweet spirit and positive message. Best parts for me were Jim Parsons (Sheldon on the Big Bang Theory) as Walter’s human counterpart and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) as the drummer for the evil Moopets.

And I watched Super 8 again on DVD. Damn that was a great movie!

By next weekend I hope to catch Arthur Christmas.

You guys see any good movies? Finish your NaNo project? Have a computer meltdown?

Don’t forget to visit Amity at Dreams are my Reality

We went back and forth between renting "Super 8" and "Bridesmaids". I wish we had picked "Super 8".

Enjoyed "The Muppets". The kids sat between the wife and I. As soon as I saw Grohl, I started yelling to her across them!

Both kids seemed to like it. My 8 year old son teared up during Kermit's big speech at the end.

I'm dying to see the muppet movie. I'm a huge fan! Sheldon fan too!

Ooh, I have to comment. You liked Super 8?? I'm not saying that I disliked it, but I found certain parts 'over done' and others a bit slow, even far-fetched. Don't get me wrong; the action was all good, but I'm a character driven kind-of-gal. Just didn't connect.

We saw Arthur Christmas on Thanksgiving day and loved it! Great story of three generations of Santas and the family dynamics of how they pull together in a crisis. Great show and a classic in the making!

I have not yet met Amity. I'm on my way to visit and meet a new cyber friend.

"A bear in his natural habitat.A Studebaker." You have to be a real fan to remember that line. I'll have to wait to rent this new one. Hoping Netflix sends me 'Super 8' this week. Things run a little slow in paradise, but hey,it's paradise.Right?

Crossed the 72k word mark at Nano, trying hard to finish the novel, but I'll submit for verification tomorrow regardless. I want to avoid the last minute rush. After my last brush with Nano technology I don't want to risk it.

Good day and good week to you.

No Thanksgiving here in Santander, northern Spain. Besides, I'm Canadian and we had our Thanksgiving already!
We were busy this weekend moving into our new apartment. My home office has a sweeping view of the bay and the mountains beyond. On Sunday I hiked in those mountains with some locals I've met. We got some nice views and visited a prehistoric menhir.

Honestly? I don't trust the newer muppet movies. They're always kinda cheesy. Is this one different?

Natalie Aguirre said...

It's fun to just be lazy some weekends. Good for you for doing it. I've heard good things about the new Muppets movie. We'll rent it when it comes out on DVD.

Amity said...

Hey Alex! Shocks! I am amazed seeing my photo up there...and the really big time announcement you made...wheww....gives my smiles...:)

Thank you so very much...:)

Looking forward to your ninja army coming my way...ha ha...:P

Rusty Carl said...

We were going to see Hugo this weekend, but had a very short window of opportunity and it wasn't playing within that window... so we saw The Three Musketeers instead. Not bad, buy much cheesier than I would have imagined.

No computer meltdowns so far. They're always on the horizon though. I lost one to a bad motherboard a few years ago. It's replacement cost more than a new PC would have.

T. Powell Coltrin said...

Lazy weekends are necessary and sooo much fun. You get to relax with a movie or book and we all need that.

Nice review.

The Muppets ruled!! I loved Jack Black as Animal's anger management sponsor. LOL "The drums are the trigger."

I did nothing, either, but watch football, eat and well, I did do Black Friday with my youngest sister and scored some deals. Blu-ray baby!

Robyn Campbell said...

Going to see Arthur Christmas Thursday. I can't wait! Then the Muppets. (Jack Black, yanno?) They are so cool! My kids wanted to be muppets when they were little. Ha!

I stayed away from the computer and went Black Friday shopping. *courageous* I did get one good deal.

I stopped working on NaNo a couple weeks ago--had too much else going on this year. At least I have a story idea for later.

We also watched Super 8 this weekend. I was pretty good, but not as good as I had anticipated. Maybe my senses were dulled by too much Thanksgiving dinner that we've been eating all weekend. It sure was a good dinner.

Can't wait to see the Muppets, but I'll have to wait until February. Thanks for the review.

Computers are fickle things. I have one that has been slowly dying on me for months. Then, it gets a new lease of life and works for a bit, before slowly dying again. I know it's going to give up on me completely at some point.

I'd say that I hope you can get your computer back up and running, but I know the allure of new fun geek toys :).

LynnRush said...

The Muppets? LOL. I'll hold off on that one, but I could see myself watching Super 8 again. Love that movie. So cute.

Yep, NaNo is finished. Just need to upload the word count. I wrote Wasteland 3 and finished in time to do my Awaited (Wasteland 2) edits from my editor. So, it all worked out. :) Yay.

Hoe you had a great Thanksgiving!!!

I was going to take the kids to the Muppet Movie this weekend, but just ran out of time. Now I'm wondering if I should....

Loved the Muppets as a child. Will check out the movie on Netflix.

Spent the weekend sorting through which crap to throw away and what last minute stuff the movers would take. Fun, huh?

Mary Aalgaard said...

I took it pretty easy this weekend. Family, food, fun, church, and a bit of art. Thanks for the movie reviews. My kids want to see "Hugo."

Lana and I watched Story Toy 3 and enjoyed it.

Hope your Thankgiving, and weeken was great.

I personally did not participate in NaNo this year, which left me plenty of time to work on perfecting telportation. In fact, I worked on it this weekend, while watching the entire first season of the SciFi channel's "The Walking Dead." I used my next-door neighbor's stray cats as test subjects. I think my teleportation device (it's shaped like a pellet gun, and sends them so quickly over the fence, they become a blur) might have actually been successful but I can't be sure. It's possible, I was only able to teleport them back onto their own property, but they keep coming back. At least they look the same when they come back, if not slightly meaner.

I watched Super 8 this weekend, too. LOVED that movie. :)

Played mom this weekend...watched football and reruns of Transformers.

The Muppets sounds good. I used to watch the Muppet Babies - that was good TV!

Jeremy [Retro] said...

Oh... no not the forth barrier... I cannot subscribe to the idea of The Muppets, I think I will go see Twilight: Breaking Wind - Fart I again... kidding [sorry very inappropriate response], though Muppets was the "NUMBER TWO" movie for the gobble weekend. I am watching the marvel movies to prep for "The Avengers" next year... watching "Captain America"...

Once again, so sorry for my potty mouth...

Had a good long break and got lots of writing done...in between bites of turkey and pie.

Super 8 is next on my Netflix list. Can't wait to see it.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Mock, good to know the kids liked the movie. And yeah, you should've picked Super 8.

SA, my wife didn't connect as well either.

Stephen, it's next on my list.

Faraway, you are a true fan then. And hope you finish your manuscript!

Sean, I'm envious!

Laura, no, it's extra cheesy, but I think all of them are cheesy.

Amity, hope that was all right!

Rusty, sorry you missed the window. And discovered it was just the power source, so don't need to replace the computer. Yet!

Melissa, you brave woman you!

Robyn, that's funny your kids wanted to be Muppets.

Talli, glad you don't see me as a slug.

CD, a new toy would've been nice, but alas, we discovered it was just the power source.

Lynn, congratulations on finishing NaNo.

Tara, I think it just made its comeback.

Vicki, take them! From the comments here, sounds like all ages enjoyed it.

Isis, no, not fun!

JL, keep working on it and keep me posted!

Jeremy, I like your title better!

Congrats to both Amity and Michael and thank you for sharing them Alex! And I have to agree with you, Super 8 is a great movie, I think it gets better every time I watch it.

Amy, looks like we figured out the problem. And fortunately we have several computers, so I'm never without one.

Karen, that's wild it was sold out!

Kitty, you will have your Daniel Craig fix soon.

Michael, The Muppets aren't your generation. And Super 8 was awesome.

Congrats to both, Amity and Michael!

I'm very excited about The Muppets, but sadly it won't be released here until next year. Stupid distributors!

"Super 8" was very good, yet hardly exceptional.

Last night I watched "Warrior" and it was a solid film! Plus, I'm watching Tintin tomorrow. Yay!

I'd love to see a good movie. Can you came and stock our local DVD store with some decent produce? :o) Glad you had a lazy weekend, I'm sure you deserved it! Now off to check out Amity and Michael ...

February Grace said...

Well, since, ya know, I am a Muppet, I am highly anticipating the film. However right now I can't seem to get my panic disorder under control enough to allow me to see it in a theater full of people :/ hopefully it'll be out on In Demand very soon because I really can't wait for it. I still remember all the words to that sweet little song that Gonzo sang in the very first Muppet movie, "I'm going to go back there someday" it still makes me cry.

As for NaNo, I was doing it as a 'rebel' this year and after losing 11 writing days smack in the middle of this month due to circumstances totally beyond my control (a medical crisis) I am at peace with the 36.5 k words I managed to write this month. I'm determined to take the rest of finishing this book at the pace it dictates- not just to type furiously another 15k in the next 2 days of stuff that will fry my eyes and that I won't end up wanting to use later anyway. So even though I didn't hit 50k new words for the project, for once, I really can't complain. For the amount of days I actually had to write, I did the best I could do given the extreme crisis state I spent most of November in.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving Alex!

Misha Gerrick said...

None of the above, but I did write 9k in one day. :-)

Heading over to Amity now.

Nancy Thompson said...

With my kid now a senior in high school, I no longer see all those kid movies, and I can't say I'm disappointed. Although I used to love The Muppet Show, I never cared for the movies. I can only take so much of Miss Piggy!

As for Super 8, I can't wait to catch that one!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Robyn, Muppets earn me respect? Damn, wish I'd known that sooner!

George, you're seeing Tintin much sooner than we are!

Jessica, maybe I need to start my own movie channel?

Bru, I think you did very well hitting 36,000+ words. And you will so enjoy The Muppets when it finally hits the small screen.

Misha, that is amazing!

I'm not planning on going to any movies right now. I'd get kicked out for coughing. I buy my computers from QVC because they usually have an easy pay plan, 4 - 6 months payment and you get it right away. And the computers come with extra stuff. I'm not a commercial though so please don't take it the wrong way.

I can be thankful that i was not pepper sprayed this past friday or run over by angry shoppers needing that extra ninja knife set (or whatever)but then again I am a Canuck and we don't have Black Friday here just the usually nutsy before Christmas mahem. I do need to see the Muppet movie but at this time i am watching films from yesteryear. I watched "The Outlaw Josie Wales"-Great Western even if Sondra Locke is in it. I always feel bad for the dog being spit upon by good ole Clint but that is part of the film. I actually look at it as a family film...in a shoot 'em up Western jaded sort of way. He loses one family but slowly gathers another and all these lost souls find themselves and create a new family. Raher uplifting I think.

Too old to see the muppets and my nephews too young to tag along....
My sort of new comp had a meltdown recently but Dell was sweet enough and bound by warranty to ship a new part so its good as new.
Nano ended for me a week ago at 31000 odd words...ran out of steam....hope to finish the story sometime soon....
I think I have read Amity's work through one of the poetry sites, will drop in again.

Thanks, Nancy - saw your post. And when I do have to replace that computer, I'm going with Alienware...

Rekha, Dell is usually my computer of choice. And you can't be too old for Muppets, because I wasn't too old!

Susan, V For Vendetta is a great film.

Fantasy, they've been everywhere lately!

Hart, you must share!!!

Give me a few minutes and I will gladly share with you the secret of teleportation, but don't blame me if the spammers get to it first.

I was thinking of watching the muppet movie. The last one that was any good was the Christmas Carol.

I'm finished with my NaNo, but I didn't get to see a movie last weekend. Perhaps that will be my reward for finishing. I've heard the Muppets is fantastic. I used to watch them every Saturday night, so I'm looking forward to seeing them on the big screen. Arthur Christmas looks great, too.

That sounds like a great movie Alex! I remember the Muppets : ) < over 35 fer surrrr. We watched the old movie, "Pretty Woman" last night. I just love the transformation between them. Ok it's kind of a Cinderella story too.

I did, in fact, have a computer monitor melt down. The computer is less than a year old...the monitor was six years old and has now gone to monitor heaven. There I was clicking away, on a roll, when the thing died and I couldn't see what I was typing. All that mattered to us was getting out to stores BEFORE the black Friday crowds. So that's what we did after seven hours of Thanksgiving prep! BTW, we got as good a deal as we would have on Friday!

Laura, aborted attempt?

ER, you will dig the movie then!

Karen, I'm over thirty five but not saying by how much...

Saw The Muppets and LOVED it. There was something incredibly magical to hear all the adults (aka, people over 20) in the theater singing along with Rainbow Connection just under their breath. As for NaNo? Um, yeah. 11K more to go. :/

I must confess to never seeing a single Muppet movie. I did, however, watch Super 8 this weekend. Was nothing like I expected but I did enjoy it. Those kids were fantastic, acting-wise and loved the 70's setting with one exception: Kids in the 70's never said "awesome." Wasn't part of the vocabulary yet.

It's good to see The Muppets back again. I'm a little afraid to see this, in case it's either a) a rehash of their classics or b) not even close to as good.

Headed over to Amity's now.

500 followers by the end of year one?! I wish I could do that. But, I'm thankful for my 173. Twice what my old blog ever did.

Almost done with NaNo. I'll finish tonight and validate before going to bed.

I so want to see Super 8. And I'll wait until the Muppets is out on DvD but I can't wait for that, either. :D Kermit the Frog was The Man when I was a kid. Or, you know, The Frog.

I remember Muppets from my childhood -- they were very popular in Poland :-) I think I will wait for this movie to be released on DVD so we can enjoy watching it at home.

I'm going to Amity's and Michael's blogs now! Thank you for introducing them :-)

Michael, thanks - I really appreciate that! Thanks for fighting your iPhone so you can comment.

Joshua, I was close. Michael is an excellent blogging buddy who knows how to connect online.

Laura, he was the frog!

Angela, nice to know Muppets are universal.

Well I believe Michael at ...in time is having a computer meltdown. I was busy nearly finishing my NaNo as you know. I would have it finished this morning but I'm still catching up on blogs! Only a few hundred to go. I can handle that!

I saw Midnight in Paris. Awesome if you love the 20s Golden Era and all those yummy Hemingways and Fitzgeralds. My children grew up on re runs of the Muppets. So cool. Another movie to see!

Enjoy your week!

Denise

Oh and I meant a few hundred words, not a few hundred blogs. Even I have my limits!!!!!!

Denise, I wondered if you meant blogs or words!

I didn't think I wanted to see The Muppets (was wondering if I'm too old), but I've heard so many good things about it that now I think I have to go! I've always had a crush on Kermit and those froggy legs.

And agree about Super 8 - one of the best movies I've seen this year.

Eating and football, you're doing a lot of things for your belly. That can be good or bad, depending on how you see it. My NaNo is down the drain...

Ella, it took me back to that age. And computer has been restored! Had to reconfigure and reload, but it's working again.

Jennifer, you could be a hundred and never be too old for Muppets!

Enid, I didn't even try NaNo this year.
