"Space" Books

John Anealio over at Sci Fi Songs has been doing a series “What is your favorite ‘space’ song?”

"Space Odyssey" has turned up more than once.

But it got me to thinking - how many sci-fi books are out there with 'space' in the title?

The answer? A LOT! See some of the books below:

Space Viking by H. Beam Piper
Pegasus in Space by Anne McCaffrey and Sharon Williams
Space Trilogy by C. S. Lewis (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength)
Legends of the Space Marines by Christian Dunn
2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke
Hellsreach (Space Marines) by Aaron Dembski-Bowden
The Hunt for Voldorius (Space Marines) by Andy Hoare
Space Wolf: The Second Omnibus (Space Wolves) by William King and Lee Lightner
Space Cadet by Robert A. Heinlein
Space Wars by Michael J. Coumatos, William B. Scott, and William J. Birnes
Implied Spaces (Singularity) by Walter Jon Williams
Space Wolf Omnibus: Spacewolf / Ragnar's Claw / Grey Hunter (Warhammer 40,000) by William King
The Currents of Space by Isaac Asimov
Manifold: Space by Stephen Baxter
The Skylark of Space by E. E. Smith and Lee Hawkins Garby
The New Space Opera by Gardner Dozois and Jonathan Strahan
Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds
Three Books of Known Space by Larry Niven
The Crack in Space: A Novel by Philip K. Dick
Alliance Space by C. J. Cherryh
The Voyage of the Space Beagle by A. E. Van Vogt
The Space Merchants by Frederik Pohl and C.M. Kornbluth
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Never Ending Sacrifice by Una McCormack
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Fearful Symmetry by Olivia Woods
and many, many others!

The Space Merchants was the oldest, written in the 50's, and a few aren't even out yet. But that was just the beginning of the 'space' books.

Wow! If I was on a quest to read 'space' books, I'd be woefully behind. I've read six. How many have you read?

Do I dare search for how many contain the word 'star?' Do I really want to know?

That's a lot.
My husband read "Bio of a Space Tyrant" and just couldn't get into the anti-hero main character.

Well, I think I'd be jettisoned into deep space since I think I've only read one on your list.

hmm i don't think i've read any...which is kind of weird since i've read a lot of those authors...

Falen, there were A LOT more - I just didn't want to copy every single one - so you probably have read a 'space' book.

I haven't read any of these. I think I'll check out The Currents of Space as I do like Alex Asimov.

Heck no, Marvin! And it was from a search on Amazon. I stopped after the fifth page!

I remember SPACE PIRATES sf book which I enjoyed reading as a kid, but I can't remember who the writer was.
I adore space operas and intergalactic adventures.

Never woulda guessed there were so many. Looking over the list, I don't think I've read any. Wonder what that says about me.

Dez, was it this one? -
Space Pirates Orme (Author), David (Author), Savage (Illustrator), Paul (Illustrator)
or...
Space Pirates (Lord Tedric No. 2) Gordon Eklund (Author), Gray Morrow (Illustrator)

Those were the only old ones that turned up in my search.

Galen, it says you need to broaden your horizons!

Definitely don't do STAR! The Star Wars books alone will fill up the post. :-)

Jemi Fraser said...

I agree with Summer - add in the Star Trek books and you'll go on for days and days.

Pegasus in Space is the one I remember best from your list, although I've probably read Heilein & Asimov. Just too long ago to remember accurately :)

I haven't read any of those...sad.

DEZMOND said...

no, I also found just graphic novels and comics with the SPACE PIRATES tittle on the Net, but the book I read was a regular novel. It was probably a small tittle, nothing overly successful in the book stores :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Ah - bummer, Dez.

Summer and Jemi, I hadn't thought of that! Crap, and my book has the word star in it. I was right, I didn't want to know!

Palin, maybe you have a new challenge then?

Alex, wanted to reply on your blog so I knew you'd get my answer.

I'm using Duotrope to search for mags I'm interested in, and they have a breakdown feature of feedback from submitters concerning acceptance/rejection rates, average response times, where else submitters to that mag submitted, and where they were accepted if accepted. Does all that make sense? Anyway, it's a really site, and definitely helpful with the breakdowns, especially the avg. response times.
